We all eat with our hands. Basically we are rice eaters so eating with hands make sense. Smelling not necessary as our food is generally aromatic. It is a general rule to sit and eat and not talk as you have to enjoy the food. Also since indians know and follow the concept of fasting we value food and value food.

The five senses does include smells or the aroma of food although maybe not sniffing the food because some are spicy n they burn the nose(nostrils) or make folks sneeze in close contact .Also most indian dishes have an aroma from quite far which is probably why the need to sniff ur food mostly never arises..The reason your smelling of the food irritates or disgusts certain people is because sometimes u sniff ur food n share it as well so you know ...germs... 😂😍🙏Great video..sorry we couldn't see the complete reaction🌹

@@maheshsapre9611You are right dear Mahesh and I think it will take some time and a slightly different mindset to perceive the sniffing of food before eating as normal by the majority of Indians especially by those who are not used to it.But I get where they are coming from .. it's something that comes naturally to them n probably something that's practised from childhood which is why it isn't a big deal for them ..You learn something new from every culture-East ,west ,north or south and we can learn to be open-minded about the cultures practiced elsewhere..That doesn't mean you need to like or even agree with it but just respect stuff as part of their food culture similar to what is significant about our food culture ,a part of which is explained in the video...n when times change so do a part of these customs...We don't sit down as much to eat our food now n not every south indian meal is on banana leaves if we r taking examples 🙏♥️😀

yeah other animals (other than the Apes) do it bcz they don't have hands.... So to feel the food before putting in their mouth, they smell it, sniff around it rather . I have never seen even a monkey doing that ( I have fed a lot of monkeys) .

@@jitendragautam1865 This(sniffing or smelling food before they eat it) is just part of how they eat food... Great to have something as basic as food n the manners in which we consume it discussed so thoroughly with interesting viewpoints... 🙏😊The fact is people have always discounted anything they don't grasp as not true or not worthy enough to be treated as truth... We need to be more open minded and understand that there are so many different ways in which people of the world do or perceive things n information... The more respectful we are of others n their ways, the more we understand and respect the differences n similarities about our culture. N about apes... I love animals, birds, insects etc.. But they are quite odd in the way they behave themselves 😂Just saw a monkey the other day taking a puppy, examining it and just whisking it off to another place.. Essentially kidnapping it.. So... 🙄N oh for the longest time ever, the south indian way of eating was regarded as 'uncouth' n 'dirty' but you see that kind of attitude sort of diminishing as more folks understand the pleasure n happiness of eating with their hands(especially the one that they use regularly...) Foreigners are still told that for Indians, one hand is for eating n the other for cleaning... That could be seen as vulgar n unclean to So many cultures...

Indian languages are written read as they sound. Sanskrit, Tamil, etc has highly developed phonetics. Thts y there can b no accent to it irrespective of who is speaking. Thts y Indians pronounce every letter of english language, which is actually issue with english language being poor, coz like c pronounced as k, i pronounced as e, etc etc. Not our problem if language has so poor phonetics ...

Yeah ofcourse, smelling is a part of eating. Traditionally we say once we have smelled a food, we have already eaten a part of it. And traditional Indian dishes pay a lot of attention to smell. There are cardamom, clove, cinammon and tons of other spices that are added to enhance the smell, not the flavour sometimes. And what are all the perfumy rose water and edible scents for? Just to enhance smell. When we walk past a food stall, the first thing that captures our attention is the smell(of Tandoori chicken for ex.) not the visuals But please don't sniff😂

We don't smell food nor taste it because in many traditions, women have a bath, tie their hair and prepare food and offer it to Bhagwan(God) first then it is served to the rest of the household and guests. That is the reason it is prepared fresh daily from scratch 3 times and sometimes more, not stored overnight . Precise thought is given to what to prepare depending on the day and its significance - if it is fasting day, festival etc.

If there is one thing we can all do- which is easy to do and has a great impact - it is to not drink anything cold during the meal. It truly dulls the digestive juices and slows the whole process down. So, if you are used to drinking iced water / cola with food, try changing it for a few days with water @ room temperature and I am sure you will notice the difference. What's even better is to consume water that's lukewarm.

You don't need to dig your nose into food to smell it. I guess that's what most of us mean when we say we don't smell food. As when somebody sniffs it that way here it's mostly to check if it's spoiled and good to eat or not. If you are eating at somebody's house here and sniff your food that way they may think you are checking if the food is stale/gone bad.

If you ignore the Yogic and the ancestral crap mentioned in this video for few minutes.... You eat with hands so that you minimize the risk of burning your tongue. Temperature cannot be sensed using fork, spoon or chopsticks. You use small vessels to eat and serve to minimize the food wastage, and to minimize the risk of overeating. Same reason goes with sitting on floor while eating. So one has a better sense of when to stop eating.

One of the most important reason we use hands to eat is bcz it helps us charges the food with the energy in your fingers and aids digestion. These days mostly ppl work on computer screens the use of spoons has increased but when ur having a proper meal most Indians prefer using their hands. Also sniffing the food is considered bad ettiquettes and disrespectful in India as most of the Indian foods are super aromatic even from a distant and the culture of offering fresh and clean food only, insists that u dont put ur nose in or close to the food... And many ppl find it annoying and offensive as we sniff a food only when its stale or gone bad... SO U DO THAT AS GUEST N PPL WILL BE LIKE...DO U THINK M OFFERING U STALE FOOD...HOW DARE YOU???🤣 🤣 jokes apart I hope u liked the vdo.
