Love this review as always. Quick question (or suggestion for videos I guess), in your opinion, Gmmk compact or Keychron K6; and GMMK TKL or K8? I know for GMMK compact and K6, it is not exactly like for like in terms of layout, but I am curious on the key differences and which would you suggest? Some key questions that I was curious about:- 1. Overall built 2. Keyboard sound resonance (since their built materials are different?) 3. RGB brightness 4. Height of keyboard. I did note that you mentioned that GMMK’s height is high with the keycaps, but from the photos it didnt look high so I am curious. Long comment I am aware and you may have covered some of it in the video so I do apologise in advance. Thanks!

This is the route I went after getting a bit overwhelmed with all the options for mechanical keyboards. Totally agree with you on this one. I just got my first custom done about a month ago and went with the base GMMK TKL barebones kit. All I did was lube the stabilizers and this keyboard sounds completely incredible with no other mods. The spacebar stabs still rattle just a bit but its not really noticeable and fixable with bandaid mod. The GMMK base board experience for an intro to the hobby just cannot be beaten as you can mod it as little or as much as you want, even none at all now and it will sound and work fire. I went with the black base GMMK TKL, 3 packs of unlubed glorious lynxes which i lightly lubed, and a nice white double shot pbt keycap set with a whale and red sun spacebar. I was a little surprised i had to cut part of the switches off and my dad was afraid for me to do it but once I snipped them and it clicked in to the hole, I knew it would be ok. One switch to test wasn't a big deal haha but my dad seriously wanted me to order a different kit like I have the money for a pro! Anyways this thing sounds and feels great to type on in the end. GMMK's software is a little confusing but they have earned a customer out of me just based on the quality of this board and the action of these switches. The PBT on aluminum sound is so great with linear switches. For my next (endgame for now) build I want to do a 96% to get the numpad back. I think I would want tactile switches on most of the keys. Other than holy/glorious pandas do you have any recs? Otherwise I think im getting drop pandas and lubing them just a bit with either a GMMK 2/pro or keychron q5, and trying POM jelly or ceramic caps. Funnily enough I think the build will come out less expensive than my TKL even with similarly expensive switches.

Man, I was just about to buy a keychron k6 but the option I wanted (reds, white backlight and hotswap) was out of stock. This seemed to be a serious contender. Saw the thumbnail and had to rewatch the video to confirm, but what do you think of the Drop CTRL (Drop Skylight - Slate) keycaps? I've decided on a GMMK TKL as my first mech, and am contemplating getting the Skylight keycaps to make a "poor man's" CTRL. However, I don't know if the keycap color scheme looks as good on a black keyboard compared to the silver of the CTRL. Aside from the color scheme, what do you think of the keycaps? It's ~$55 for a set shipped from Drop. For that price there are a lot of other options out there. I believe I've heard more than 1 review saying they're OK, and have a surprisingly coarse texture to them.
@matthieuzglurg60153 жыл бұрын
the price diffrence isn't really that strange, espacially for the barebones : the case, PCB and top plate are equally expensive to make, the difference in materials don't really matter, the tooling does. same goes for the prebuilt version, though with full size their margins might be a little tighter since they have to take into account the extra switches and key caps too

was or better said still is my first venture into mechanical keebs as well, but the full size. the top mount is shitty if you want to have switches that do not take the LEDs into consideration... which is the case with a lot of keys. Kailh keys for some reason have a open space in most of their housings, so t hey fit snug with this pcb. Almost all other switches do not. That was a bit of a bummer to me. 3 pin as well, but you can cut the feet off, so not too big of a downgrade. I dunno if I would still use it as a good entry, it is not bad for the price point, but the options you have today with a lot of these custom group buys offer usually more value for money.

I don’t agree with the statement of this being the “number one” beginner mechanical keyboard for getting into customs, I think the NK65 Entry edition and also the NK65 v2 are way better options, both for the price and especially for what you’re getting. This doesn’t even come close to be honest

Aaaaaand its out of stock. Not blaming NovelKeys tho but if its readily available I would 100% agreed with you especially the NK65 Entry Edition.

They will be though, Novelkeys promised that it will be an instock item, not something limited, eventually it’ll be incredibly easy to obtain

It's not a question of honesty. It's a question of what you value. I've helped two other people get started with this hobby and neither wanted to wait for months or compete to purchase. I tried to order the NK Entry and it was sold out in under a minute. Beginners want easy and low investment risk.
