I memorize the KJV. I have many reasons… one reason is the fact it is understandable and yet Set Apart from the common English dialect and instantly understood to be scripture. Another reason is I was saved as a young 8 yr old from it and I have memorized many verses from it.

I actually use 3 different versions. Some of the Psalms I memorized in NKJV. Then, I use CSB and NIV for NT. It just depends on how familiar I am with it and if I had already memorized in NIV before. I think my main one will be CSB, because it is more word for word than the NIV, and to me, it flows really well to be spoken. My husband uses and teaches SS out of the ESV, that one is a struggle for me to comprehend.

I love and prefer READING the NLT. But for memorization I always go to the ESV. And then of course, the Lord's Prayer I love from the KJV.

What a pleasant surprise this was, to find this on my KZbin app. One of my two favorite Pastor Tims being interviewed by some guy I didn't recognize on a channel I never heard of on a topic I just had to watch and listen to immediately. Long before the end, I recognized the interviewer as my brother, Josh. Why, yes. Yes, I did subscribe and hit the notification bell. To ye of Pastor Tim's expanding KZbin flock, "Go thou and do likewise . . ." Josh, since you asked (and even if you didnt): The Scripture I memorize, or rather, have memorized, is mostly KJV. Many moons ago, most of the research material was keyed to Strongs which was keyed to KJV, so that was my wide margine my reader my preacher my EDC. Now, KJV is my comfy, broke-in pair of Levi 501 button-fly's. Might have to start memorizing NKJV & CSB, the current 501's of my wife, 2 sons and their wives. I seem to have a knack for memorizing, maybe the fruit of being both a musician and a math nerd? Anyway, I'm really looking forward to a deep dive into this teachable memorizing technique. It never occurred to me that it could be anylized and taught. Cool. Great job, Tim and Josh, my brothers. Thanks and may God richly bless your continued godly endeavors.

I will read a passage in 3 different translations. I will use the one that speaks to me. If you are going to memorize, memorize the passage that works with your brain. I haven’t found that a passage is so dramatically different for one to be right and one wrong. Be sure to utilize the Holy Spirit inside you.

Well, I'll be..... The (Catholic) New Jerusalem Bible (released in 1985) uses that exact same wording for Psalm 23.

In French, I memorize the "Official liturgical translation" used in Catholic Mass. It's not meant to be the most word-for-word translation on paper, and I use other ones for study : it has been tweaked by linguists for the very purpose of being read out loud in the most intelligible way possible, i.e. in a Church settings, or quoted orally in a conversation.

I have chosen to memorize from the NASB 1995 because of its literal accuracy and readability. Its word-for-word translation helps me stay close to the original text, while its clarity makes it practical for both study and application. However, I still read from my NKJV.

But from my youth onwards, I have used NIV 84 for memorization because I am more familiar with it. Memorize? I have a hard time remembering to take my daily meds! Seriously, I always had a problem with memorization so I quit trying. But I love digging in and learning, so all of my Bibles are study oriented. I use whatever text the pastor is using, which makes it easier for me to follow along with the sermon. I then take the notes I made during those sermons and write out all of the Scriptures that the pastor referenced, and with the help of washi tape and scotch tape, I affix the Scriptures onto the page in my notebooks. For this season in my life, I currently listen to teachings of two pastors who both use the NKJV, and one who uses the NIV. However, I own, and use, the KJV, ESV, NASB, CSB, NLT, and more recently the LSB. I like having all of the different transactions on hand, particularly when I am a bit confused about what Scripture is saying. If I was ever going to try to memorize Scripture, it would likely be from the KJV. It was and is my favorite translation.

I'm 70 and the KJV wss the only Bible in our house at the time and in the church I went to. So, that's what I go to for memorization because since I have many translations it all gets muddled in my brain if I try to memorize in a newer version. Plus it is very poetic like Shakespeare. Right now my favorite to just read as a "read in a year" Bible is the NLT. I'm on the last 3-4 chapters of Revelation and thinking about which of my bibles I want to read next.

I've read most mainstream translations. I suffer hearing the NIV and now the TNIV at church these days but for memorising it has to be the KJV. There's power in that translation. When you quote it to people they recognise that it's God's Word. The newer translations don't impress non believers like the KJV. It impresses me too. Personally I think that whatever translation you memorise from you should stick to it rather than memorise various translations. One of the many issues I have with people using all kinds of translations in church is that it's the enemy of memorisation to hear lots of different versions. When you constantly hear the same version you absorb verses by osmosis. The way I learned a lot of scripture as a kid was by hearing it over and over like The Lord's Prayer, Psalm 23, etc.

I have used the NLT for years and have had my deepest moments with God in it and have people told me not to use it. I do compare it with NKJV and the original Hebrew and Greek though so I still get literal original meanings and literal content and sometimes God speaks deeply to me through those as well but I understand NLT the best, God always speaks deeply to me in NLT and I can memorize it 😊 and I Definitely prefer older translations of bibles, at least 1970's and lower

My main translation is NKJV, ESV and NASB95. Lately I’ve been enjoying the CSB. I find it so easy to read, it’s very natural. It’s actually pretty good the more I research it. I’ve been using it in Logos Bible software. Btw, didn’t realize you did Christian content and security/privacy content. Very cool, I work in cybersecurity and in cloud security.

I'm a musician. So for memorization, it is the KJV. It's probably the worst english translation as far as accuracy. But there's nothing really bad in it. Unless you zero in on one or two words..... Or build a doctrine upon a tiny phrase. It's very a alliterative and rhythmic. Makes for easy memorization

Nowadays people talk about readability and adaptability to different groups, but the Scriptures before the modern era were read in Hebrew and Greek just as they were, whether they were young or old, whatever their educational level - shepherds, fishermen or scribes and Pharisees. Everyone just have to understand what the Word of God said. In a way, it's like reading a legal document, a professional text or an intimate love letter, but wait, this is about reading what God the highest authority was saying. Hence when the texts are translated, of foremost importance is that they should be as accurate and close to the original words. The reader must be diligent to study the closest translation, of course preferably with knowledge of the original languages. And not expect the Holy Writ to adjust or dilute or simplify itself for one's understanding. When i read my medical textbooks, when i read government official letters, when i read letters in a foreign language, when i explore ancient manuscripts, I will do what i can to find out the exact meanings of the text, whether difficult, new words or archaic, unconventional expressions. And I have found that if anyone cares enough, he or she will do whatever to understand, just like a young girl trying to read a thick Harry Potter book.

@BibleMemoryGoal Agree, just that we should try to get as close to the original as we can. I know that things can get lost in translation and sometimes they are inevitable. But the translation philosophy and the choice of words out of many can affect the original meaning. Context is built upon the text and text upon the words and each word has its nuance and specially chosen value. And that is why I study Hebrew and Greek, (note what Jesus said about iota and keraia) and after studying them, plus also watching out for Aramaic, I realise there are significant things to be learned and unlearned. Some words can be difficult to translate but they are meant and chosen to be so. So a translator, who interprets according to his doctrinal worldview, may choose to use easier, more readable words to translate them. For those who don't know the original languages, an Interlinear Bible will be great with Strong's concordance reference. If you find a translation differs far from the Interlinear Bible, then maybe researching more about the words can yield fruitful outcomes. I applaud you for your memorialisation training and I also want to practise and master more of it. But choosing a more accurate version and referencing the Interlinear Bible will be a great investment for our spiritual walk and life.

I will not be using any of the Bible translations mentioned. Why? Quite simply, my native language is German and my English is just enough to understand your videos. Well, that's not what it's supposed to be about. Regardless of the language, I find your channel very helpful and inspiring. I started with the Psalms and used more communicative translations at the beginning. However, I'm leaning more and more towards traditional ones. Here in Germany we have an online page where you can see different translations side by side. These can be put together as desired. At first I jumped back and forth and used different translations for different verses of a psalm.

@BibleMemoryGoal Hi. Indeed it is! I was hoping someone had some ideas. There are a couple reasons someone may want switch translations. Let's say you're working through a Book and you come to a passage for which you don't like the way it was translated. Or later you learn something new and think a better wording is more appropriate. For example, I started my journey about 3 years ago with Dr. Davis' Approach to Extended Scripture Memorization. On Youversion there is a 62 day app for 2 Peter. At the time, I was very unfamiliar with the Bible and Bible translations. Only the basics really. I used the KJV, but I came across Chapter 2 verse 16. I knew what it means, but I was shocked. Then later, I found out that the KJV uses "charity" instead of love in many places (again 2 Peter and also 1 Corinthians 13) and I believe it should be love. Lastly, the KJV (and even the NKJV in one place) has "God Forbid" throughout Galatians and Romans. At the time it was translated by Tyndale, I'm sure it wasn't used like it is today. But I don't like it. Other translations use, "May it never be" or "Certainly not." I couldn't have told you all that years ago. But now I know. I don't want to change mid-book or switch the words out. Any thoughts?

I was reading NLT and came across Galatians 2:20 and a few others that changed the context by changing the word from "of" to "in". Making it sort of like a conditional context. I noticed it is a common change to all translations to exclude the KJV. What are your thoughts? Thank you for the video and for your response if you do respond. Thank you!

The Blue Letter Bible app will give you a good way to read and study Scripture side-by-side. You can do word study that goes back to the original language which should give you better insight into the translation.

The KJV is the best one to memorise. The old school language automatically makes it stand out and, hence, more memorable and it has seeped into the fabric of western society over hundreds of years, so you'll have grown up hearing KJV passages without even realising it.

@@BibleMemoryGoal I don’t believe the texts are more reliable or complete. I believe a humble study of the manuscript issue would lead to the same conclusion. The problem today is we place more faith in scholars than the plain promises of God to preserve His word. I cannot accept that God lost track of his word until the modern age. I was saved as an 8yr old from a KJV bible that was used in the children’s ministry. When I was 17 I went through a time of rebellion and restoration. During that time I poured over a NIV and was bothered by some of the notes claiming whole passages are not in the oldest and best mss. ( I found this to be a serious and troubling claim) Eventually, I studied this issue and came to my current conviction. I don’t condemn others for using the MT and even have many copies of them in my ipad bible program for reference.

When God promises His word will never fade away, He does not mean that a certain English translation of the Bible should never be changed. The KJV has many mistakes in it, and often the oldest manuscript is not the best one to use. What happens if one old manuscript says X and one hundred slightly less old manuscripts say Y? I would think that the older one probably had a mistake. There are plenty of good English translations out there, and even though it's best for you, there is nothing special about the KJV.

Greetings.... according to the gospel of Luke 24:45, it is God the Holy Spirit that guides, comforts and sheds light on the scriptures which are hidden from the "natural man" in 1 Corinthians 2:14, not some new translation that inconsequentially tries to by pass what only God can reveal.

In the gospel of John Ch. 10 v9 Jesus says: "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved. and shall go in and out, and find pasture. V1 says: Verily verily I say unto you He that entereth not by the door, into the sheepfold but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. It seems to me that all "New" versions after the King James bible are ladders being used to climb up some other way. The thing is, God reveals himself via his Spirit and is when we are given eyes to see and ears to hear with. We are saved by faith, not by cutting corners. Anything derived from the Nestle Alan text is of no use to me. Anyway.... have a nice day.

You're one of those people who wants one right answer. If you're going to read anything in translation, there's never going to be one right answer. You could spend many years becoming an expert in those ancient languages, and seeing how much the ancient scrolls agree with each other (and where they disagree.) The next best thing is reading several translations, as suggested in the video, and comparing what you think they're saying to you I'm not a Christian anymore, though I've read the Bible from cover to cover more than once , in my childhood Revised Standard Version, and read some favorite passages in several different translations. I've also compared different translations of other favorite works, such as the Tao Te Ching and the Kalevala, and having more than one translation before me feels like a way of getting a better sense of the original. It's like triangulating.

I personally would stick with the KJV. There's no other version that's purer than that. If we memorize, we really need to have a pure meaning of the scripture embedded in our minds.

I wish you would actually watch the video. I love the KJV, but calling it a “pure translation” is incorrect on many levels, not the least of which is spiritualizing a particular translation that was never meant to be spiritualized.

@@BibleMemoryGoalI don’t believe God has a problem with me believing His Word is pure. The KJV has stood the test. I’m a Bible translation libertarian. Jesus quotes a translation and referred to it as “every Word of God”…

I have to agree with Josh on this one. The KJV has a nostalgic feel to it, but to call it pure is a bit of a stretch as there are instances of verses being mistranslated and the translators themselves put a disclaimer in the beginning that their work is not inspired nor inerrant. The biggest downfall of the KJV is that for modern times, it’s the least intelligible which is a huge issue. We don’t speak that way any longer so often times people don’t understand what is being communicate when it’s quoted. Just my two cents.
