I don't know about that. I am not adept at calling endings that make me terribly sad "good" just because they pulled a ton of negative feelings from within me. I totally agree about The Grisha Trilogy. I think the hate for the ending comes from readers' investment in ships that didn't happen (and were never going to happen) or having sympatry for a character who deserved none, in my opinion. The epilogue in Ruin and Rising is beautiful and bittersweet. It also makes sense considering the rest of the series. Also, how the prologue and epilogue sections are done and titled is a hint towards the way things played out in the end. The whole series gets a lot of undeserved hate in general. Some of it's been there since Six of Crows got really popular, some fans of the duology can't praise it without tearing down the trilogy. I totally get not liking it and /or preferring Soc but there's no need to hate. But some of the negativity is more recent, when a couple of people started talking about their dislike and many people jumped on the bandwagon. Lately there's also this trend of shunning older YA books that were popular 5+ years ago. I heard many variations of "I know it's an older YA series" and "it came out a while ago so it probably won't hold up anymore" as a disclaimer before someone talks about a non-recent YA title. As if we collectively decided those books are all trash. Yes, you can say YA has some noticeable trends, maybe more than other genres/age ranges but trends exist for all categories. And I don't see this whole thing anywhere else., only with YA and I don't like it. Pointing out when something was punished can be useful for context and sometimes there are things that feel dated or hard to understand or accept from a modern viewpoint. Maybe the world changed a lot in the last 5-10 years but I'm fairy sure people said this in the past too. Stories always reflect the time they were written in, nothing is truly timeless. This is not a bad thing and doesn't determine quality.

I love the ending of Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas. I know its not the end of the series but WHAT A WAY TO END A BOOK. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Of course at the time I hated the fact I had to wait a whole year for the next book, but now, looking back, I believe the wrapped up she prepared from the previous books and how she set the story up for the finale: Amazing 👏

Its amazing that we have such a mutual taste regarding most of the books. I felt the same way about The Mistborn Trilogy, I felt it very satisfying. And no doubt about the awesomeness of The Stormlight Archives, I started Oathbringer and now feeling bit nervous because we have mutual feeling about Brandon Sanderson and that you felt its ending worst. But I hope the whole book to be great. And, about the toll, I liked how it ended but not how the was approached, I felt like the author rushed to finish the series and cramped 4 books worth content in 3 books.

I guess I deleted my own comment. Anyway, Grisha trilogy's ending betrays signals in the series that it is going to be more tragic than it ends up being. Across the board, it felt like Bardugo got to the end of the book and forgot what she was building toward, or could not bring herself to do it. So, she made the ending so absurd and out of place for the dark tone of the book that it kind of ruined the overall series. I love the ride to the ending, but like the Mass Effect 3 ending, I got to the end and was like..."What?"
