Thank you for providing me with the basis for my most sound light test braid-fluoro knot! I’ve spent hours of days tying and break testing light line (4-6 lb) braid-fluoro knots of various types: FG, SC, GT, Yucatán, double uni (the easiest breaking by far as you suggest herein) and this “lazy” “improved” Alberto. For the fingertrap/jam knots like this, the biggest defect for me comes with burning the fluoro during the knot seating/tightening step. The Yucatán was my most inconsistent tie in terms of burning fluoro from one knot to the next. The knot you present has become my nirvana, with the caveat that the method by which I tie this knot has eliminated the need for overly cautious “perfect” up and down spacing of the wraps. To achieve this, I attach a Stoneflo hackle plier to the braid tag and swing it around the mono away from the loop and then back toward the loop. The weight of the hackle plier achieves a perfect very tight touching 1st wrap. The 2nd return wrap back down toward the loop is not as precise, but doesn’t need to be per my knot strength tests. Executing the wraps with the weight of the hackle plier allows me to immediately seat the wraps by pulling them down the fluoro to close the loop. I wear chapstick on the water, and touching the knot loop to the lips offers an alternative to saliva. After some light adjustments to the seated knot barrel by light pulls of the braid tag and main, I can fully tighten the knot with zero burned/damaged fluoro external to the barrel of the knot. I did find that wrapping up and then back down over the 1st wraps is better than wrapping in just one direction. I target 8 up and 8 down per your video However, exact wrap counts are not necessary within the margin of error of my break test data. The speed with which the knot is tied is significantly increased with the hackle plier. The consistency of the knot is steady in both rain and shine tying conditions. Starting with your video and adapting to tie the knot with a hackle plier has yielded my strongest, most consistent and burn-free knot for light test (4-6lb). I fish with abandon for smallmouth not ever fearing an unexpected break due to poor knot consistency. And I throw fearlessly into cover not fearing snags and retie “opportunities”. Thanks again for sharing the finer details of your method.

@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
Let us know how it goes - and it's really thin fluoro leader that gets weakened by the tensioning required to properly seat a FG knot, the braid can take it in fact the thinner the better when it comes to braid.
@cespaia3 жыл бұрын
@@CookingandFishing ok, week but when I set the knot up, I tighten it and after I test it pulling both sides is always the braid that breaks , not the Fluoro, why is that?? By the way the guy from the local shop suggested to use just nylon…

What makes an Alberto an Alberto? The way I was taught (on other videos) was you make your wraps going away from the loop and then wrapping again in the other direction (toward the loop). If you then wrap the braid around the leader and braid on one side of the loop, that makes it "Improved".

UK sea bass angler here. I lost a big fish the other week due to a uni to uni knot snapping. I mainly use 20 lb braid to 20 lb fluoro leader. I've tried so many techniques to tie the FG, but I found that the amount of tension you need to put on the lighter lines to get it to work is just weakening the lines. Plus, the FG is a pain to tie! Got this knot on the first try after watching your vid. So easy to tie and feels pretty strong. Thank you buddy!
@CookingandFishing2 жыл бұрын
Excellent! But tbh 20lb fluoro I'm looking at the FG myself - not sure how the UK measures braid but if you're issues with the FG failing on 20lb fluoro leader I would step down the braid diameter - the thinner the braid in relation to fluoro the better "bite" you'll get on the FG knot.

This even works with 50lb braid to 20lb leader pitching/flipping through micro guides… it seems to pass through better than the FG knot actually. I think this is because the FG knot is much longer and adds a lot of stiffness to that section of your line.
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
Yes and more importantly I could never get a consistent "bite" when going 50lb braid to lighter leader, 30lb fluoro maybe but 15-20 is a crap shoot. FG works best with thinner dia braid biting into thicker leader material, in my experience anyway.

@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
If you're clipping the braid tag end flush, that is the reason the knot slips. You'll notice if you leave a 1/4" braid tag end that it will separate and fluff up like a cotton ball - if you cut it flush that is still happening but INSIDE the knot. Flush fluoro tag end, 1/4" braid tag end.

Correct me if I’m wrong - but there seems to be a remaining doubled section of the mono leader, which means the knot is not as slim as the fg.

Don't get me wrong, on the water testing is important, but bench tests under controlled conditions is the best way to say what is best and not just what is good enough. For me I will keep the FG knot and tie it under high tension. I practice it a lot and I am pretty fast at it. I used to tie the alberto just like you do here, but I no longer do because it was weaker for me.
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
W/e works for you, but "high tension" and 5lb floro doesn't work for me on or off the water. You are stressing that light leader material forcing braid to bite into it in a single strand. Anything over 15lb floro gets the FG, anything under gets the improved alberto.
@charlessullivan9134 Жыл бұрын
Hope you are still monitoring your replies. I have tried this knot multiple times using 50# Bass Pro Excel premium braid to 12# mono and the trimmed leader pulls thru the knot each time, so I assume it ONLY is for the # test lines and types you mentioned in the video. @CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
That shouldn't happen, but generally speaking you want your braid diameter to be thinner than your leader diameter. That's for any connection knot that "bites" braid into leader, including all the variations of Alberto/Albright (which this is) and FG/GT knots etc.

Do you think this knot will hold up to 25-30 redfish in the marsh? Im using 20lb braid to 15lb fluoro. Im tying it correct at home. Just havent gotten a chance to use it.
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
I'd say so I mean with 15lb fluoro you can really yank on it to test. 15lb+ leader is also approaching FG knot territory for me, tho 15lb I can go either way.

Why so much tag on the braid end? Seems like it would cause wind knots?
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
The long braid tag end is essential - if you clip it too short it will unravel inside the knot causing failure. Long fluoro tag end = wind knots; clip fluoro tag end perfectly flush, leave 1/4" on the braid tag end and you're set.

If I'm using some power pro spectra 15lb braid what lb flouro should I use with it as a leader ?
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
You can use anything from 4 to 30lb fluoro that's the beauty of the braid to leader system, you're not locked into a particular line size at the presentation end. I would say that anything over 25lb fluoro and you risk breaking somewhere in the braid mainline if you hit a snag or big fish...not really something you want to do losing 40 yards of braid and leaving it in the water!

@CookingandFishing4 жыл бұрын
Perfect, as long as you trim that leader tag flush. Do leave a little tag on the braid side.
@richardtuxford18123 жыл бұрын
@@CookingandFishing quick question, why are you leaving such a long braid tag? What's the purpose
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
@@richardtuxford1812 Good question - the braid tag end will separate into individual strands and unravel when casting through guides, and if you leave it too short some fibers will start working its way back through the knot, hence the longer length braid tag end. Since braid is soft and limp and even softer once the tag end starts to separate, it makes no difference through the guides on a cast, so leaving it 1/4 -1/2" long doesn't hurt anything but will save your knots from failing.
@richardtuxford18123 жыл бұрын
@@CookingandFishing thanks for the response, much appreciated! With a gel spun / fused line where the fibres are less prone to separation, do you think you could go shorter? I tend to fish 4lb line for bream here in Sydney quite frequently so just getting my head around how this one would work. Thanks again
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
@@richardtuxford1812 Honestly with any braid I would leave at least 1/8" tag just to be safe. Like I said there's no harm in leaving a braid tag end since it's soft and limp, you definitely want to cut the floro tag end flush.

What's wrong with the FG knot? JW. I used the Yuctan knot.
@CookingandFishing4 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with it, but in light lb leaders...5, 6, 8 etc, you can weaken the floro by trying to tension the FG knot properly. The Alberto/Albright variants take a lot less force to finish correctly, thus preserving the light leader material.
@JESSEPAVON4 жыл бұрын
Why not jut do the albert improved? I don’t understand why this way is better, please let me know. Thanks.
@CookingandFishing4 жыл бұрын
I find it a neater knot only wrapping up the leader once as opposed to crisscrossing it back. You end up with a thinner dia knot as well...not that important in lighter braid but once you get over 30lb braid you'll notice a difference in the knot size.

@FishNFoolLures5 жыл бұрын
The Crazy Alberto knot is stronger, you tie it basically the same other than you wrap 8 times down the line and then 8 times back up the line over the other wraps. put the tag line through the same way as your main line. It is easy to tie and you don't have to go slow, just lube and pull. It is the only leader to braid knot i use for light lines and it has never failed.. To tie a lure to any line the Fish-N-Fool knot that I invented is the strongest and about the easiest knot to tie you will ever find and is still the strongest knot ever tested with braid or mono. The FG is by far the best knot to tie a heavy leader to braid hands down.
@CookingandFishing5 жыл бұрын
In my experience the crazy alberto is only slightly stronger if you tie it perfectly...hence the "half" or "lazy" alberto. Anyway, is the fishing fool knot a uni that you pass through the eye twice? I've been using that for awhile if so. If there's something more to it I'd love to see an instructional video!

Problem with this knot, like an albrite knot, the least streamlined part of the knot is facing your guides as you cast, it cops abuse one way or another, even with tiny or no tag, either way the knot effectively looks like this -------
@CookingandFishing5 жыл бұрын
You're correct that the tag end faces the guides, whether that's actually a problem is dubious...I only use this knot for light (sub 10lb) leaders, mostly 5 or 6lb floro, and my current knot has been casted all day over 4 trips, caught over 70 smallies with zero issues.
@thereelaccountant92464 жыл бұрын
I would rather it face that way so that it is smooth when casting. Right?

but actually creasing the flouro is automatically making the chances way better for a weak spot forming. for best results loop it around your finger
@CookingandFishing3 жыл бұрын
The part that's creased isn't under tension inside the knot, so it wouldn't affect anything except make the knot easier to tie.
