Interesting. Two thoughts come to mind after watching this - 1. If the effect is primarily in the region of the brain responsible for executive functioning, could nitrate-rich diets be extra beneficial for people with ADHD, as it is mostly a deficiency in executive functioning? Are there any studies testing this? 2. What are some food rich in nitrates? Drinking 2 cups of beetroot juice a day sounds like a lot of red urine, and arugula is kinda trick to find where I am, and when I do find it - it goes bad after 2 days in the fridge. Any more robust or richer alternatives? Thanks!

ADHD as I've come to understand (I'm not an expert, but I have it) is an executive functioning disease, where basically the pre-frontal cortex isn't as active as it is in 'neurotypical' people. Could this increase in CBF from nitrate rich foods have any significant impact on the future treatment of ADHD? I would like to get away from ADHD medication eventually, so this connection seems somewhat hopeful.

I have a very healthy relationship with my stimulant medication since I have been Whole food plant based. I have not had to increase dose for 9 months, which is about the same span of time I've been scrupulous with WFPB. When I was eating animals and more processed oils I would get all the standard yucky side effects, cold extremeties, tachycardia, etc. Now I get them here or there, but otherwise I have no problem. I took a tolerance break for a couple of weeks 4 months ago so I didn't have to up the dose, and I'm sure my diet allowed for a smoother transition off and back on to dexedrine/dextrostat (the one I've found most success.with)

The whole beet is more beneficial in other ways, with more fiber and less concentrated sugar. It is not an extracted, refined food, as all juices are. That said, the juice is a concentrated product so probably has a higher percentage of nitrates. I admit that I'll drink a 3-4 oz shot of beet juice before a long run or a race in hopes it gives my arteries a boost. However, in general, I stick to whole foods.
