Lentils and garbanzo beans are put to the test.
Which legumes benefit from the highest levels of antioxidants? If you compared the total antioxidant content of ten different legumes, which do you think would come out on top? Pinto beans, lima beans, red kidney beans, black kidney beans-for which I think they just mean black beans-navy beans, small red beans, black-eyed peas, mung beans, lentils, versus chickpeas. Who can guess the winner and the loser?

I’ve since expanded my prebiotic mix to include hulled purple barley and rye berries. Together with oat groats and beluga lentils that forms the base for many sweet and savory dishes in the Greger household. Mmm, this video is making hungry.

You can bake with cooked lentils. Just make sure their weight does not exceed the weight of flour. Let the lentils replace some of the liquid components in the recipe. You won't know they're there, but it will be tasty and filling.

I've just started making lentil and oat flour pancakes 😊 Blend 1cup to 1.1/2 cps of lentils that have been soaked and drained, with about 4tbspoons of wholegrain oat flour (that I ground in nutribullet) half a banana with 2 eggs and liquid drained from the lentils, just enough to make a thick batter, cook slowly till brown on both sides . I had butter and Date syrup on top with a squeeze of lemon and sometimes a dollop of unsweetened greek yogurt 😋 there very yummy and even my husband said they tasted good and he's skeptical about trying things like that. Also add black eyed beans or lentils to mince meals it makes it go further and is healthier for you 😊

Thanks for those nuggets of valuable info, I’m glad you mentioned Chick Peas( Chana) as they are so delicious as well as v nutritious, and being 1 of the main ingredients in Humous, along with Sesame Seeds, Garlic, Lemon Juice etc, makes Humous VERY nutritious!. I’ve yet to come across any Vegan yters ( Doctors, health/fitness etc folk) who have mentioned Sprouting Legumes, Seeds etc. Humous for example can be made with Chickpeas AFTER they’ve been sprouted making them much more nutrient dense!. Sprouted Peas, Beans, Seeds & Wheatgrass, Alfalfa etc are like natural Multi Vit tablets, packed full of a variety of Nutrients! Why does no one mention them, or better still, list off their Vit content a bit like in above Vid!.

ReachForTheStarch depends on the lentil. Red lentils will always be mushy, nothing you can do about that. Your best bet for cooking them is probably making a stew or soup out of them or incorporating them into a recipe. If you aren't doing it that way, id suggest just buying canned lentils bc I can never cook them right either.

@FinalRadius
@FinalRadius 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gary-jh3wd Red Lentils - They are very fast to cook and (for me) they are the most tasty! Just sauté some red onions and garlic in some low-sodium Vegetable broth for around 5 mins (add more as needed), then add tomato puree,thyme, oregano, basil, paprika, iodized salt (not needed), black pepper and little bit of cayenne pepper (not to much). Then cook for further 2 minutes and add the Red Lentils and 3 cms water above the lentils (like 1/3 of a finger). Let it cook on low-medium heat for 7 mins. Turn on the heat to medium-maximum and add tomato paste and stir for 2 minutes and it should be done. These Lentils are amazing to get aside with some sauté vegetables (carrots, peppers, mushrooms, celery, eggplants), quinoa and broccoli (I'm having that for dinner haha). You can also make dahls, curries and even bologneses with this type of lentils (although i prefer the brown ones for bolognese). www.forksoverknives.com/recipes/vegan-soups-stews/red-lentil-dal-recipe/ --- dahl kzbin.info/www/bejne/h37Wi52na8aNr9U ----- curry Green and brown lentils - This type of lentils take more time to cook and don't get like the red ones, they only absorb the water and cook like rice or quinoa, it doesn't turn into a mushy paste. This can be cook by soaking them for 12-24 hours and then cook them like you cook beans, like black beans, just put it on a pressure cooker or in a normal pot and cook them for 25-15 minutes with 2 parts water to 1 part lentil. Then use it as a side pulse, like you use black beans, pinto beans and chickpeas or you can add them into a bolognese sauce and have a lentil bolognese dish with pasta and broccoli! I recommend you this video too if you are intersted on lentils and on how to cook them - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnbRg5KaqN93b5I Happy cooking and a healthy life for you buddy1

I make a pot of mixed beans every week or so, so I have them available to eat every day. I use a mixture of pinto beans, red beans, and black beans for the bulk of the mixture, and then I add a smaller amount of soybeans, green and red lentils, adzuki beans, and sometimes mung beans to increase the variety of nutrients and other phyto-chemicals. In order to keep from getting bored with the same thing, I change which bean will dominate the pot and the spices used....and, I'll also change things by making a pot of just lentils some weeks that I can thin down into a soup or use in other recipes. And, of course, I'll occasionally make a batch of just chickpeas that I eat as is or add to salads or other recipes, that I use to make hummus, and I drain off and reserve the chickpea broth to make various types of quick and easy soups using a spoonful of miso in place of salt.

Calvin Burr, Sounds tasty. Do you have the recipes (and/or videos) you use for this, measurements, what spices, etc?
@calvinburr1248
@calvinburr1248 5 жыл бұрын
@Maxim C. I don't use a recipe for cooking the beans...but, I cook them in a stainless steel insert that I put in a deep pressure cooker. When done, I remove the insert, and put its top on it. When cool, it goes in the fridge. My pressure cooker doesn't get dirty and only needs to be dried, but every once in a while I'll need to clean the mineral deposits at the bottom of the pressure cooker with white vinegar. A typical batch will be one cup of pintos, a half cup of red beans, a third cup of black beans, and then I'll add about a quarter cup each of soybeans, lentils, and maybe one or two other types of beans. I sort, wash, and soak them in a mild brine for about 16 to 24 hours. I drain, rinse, and put in my insert with enough water to cover....then I add some chopped onion, carrot, celery, parsley, garlic, cilantro. Spices might be curry powder, turmeric, black pepper, cayenne, thyme, oregano, basil, bay....or I might go more for a cumin flavor in place of the last four...I often use epazote as another way to flavor beans, which is mostly a Mexican thing to use with some types of beans. With chickpeas, I don't use anything...I prefer to have them clean and unflavored so they can be used in a number of ways. Usually, 45 minutes in the pressure cooker before I turn off the heat is good enough, and they I let them sit until the pressure is down. One thing I do with my beans all the time is to place some in a bowl, then I mash them up into a paste with a fork, mix in a little of my favorite salsa (such as Pace Picante Sauce), and then I use that as a dip for unsalted tortilla chips, pieces of a tortilla, pita bread, or to butter a tortilla before filling it with other things like avocado, pico de gallo, etc. This bean paste I make is very similar to refried beans in the way it is used....I call it "Mexican Butter" because Mexicans use refried beans to spread on many foods, including sandwiches. Other times, I just eat the beans unmashed.

i do something very similar - soak lentils - all kinds, sometimes a mixture of types - add your favorite seasonings - change it up. Add chia seeds. Pour on baking pan and you get cookie-like, transportable food in endless flavors. I've used compliant bbq, taco, even cacao with strawberries. One cup lentils, two cups water and soak. Blend with seasonings to taste. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Possibilities are literally endless.

I've noticed that my body gets excited right before eating chickpeas, they are everyday food in my house (it's a microbiome kind of thing). Lentils are wonderful too and I will be making a batch in the InstantPot tomorrow, thanks for the suggestion.

Yeahhh I mean I know a Google search isn't everything but from a quick Google search all I can see is that reheating it is not always the best idea... Cooking it is healthy. 'Toxic' is a pretty non-specific buzz-word unless you want to clarify Andy M

I added lentils for dinner to increase my protein intake. And I noticed that I no longer have the urge to eat again later at night which is a great side benefits I think especially for people who want to do time restricted feeding.

Michael Balfour just search for the sprouting benefita, it really has no conflict of interest lol. Anyways heres a link : www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/1342162/ In the study it says there was a reduction of oglisachirides(something like this) which is what's so hard to digest in beans and legumes. Also forgot to mention phytic acid content decreases (anti-mineral or mineral-inhibitor, however you may think of it)

I'm quite amazed by the synchronicities that occur in my life: A few weeks ago, I introduced apples in my diet and then after a day or so, I saw a video in this channel about apples. Then I was thinking of how I could reduce my weight and a video suggesting the optimal diet for weight loss came up, from this channel again. And today, right after finishing my launch, which was lentils by the way, tada! "Benefits of lentils and chickpeas" shows up on my notification bar. What the fact, Dr. Greger, are you psychic or something? Do you tap into the collective consciousness of mankind?
