I have two 30-06's in my gun safe. I love both of them dearly. The "show stopper" for me was when I updated my AR15 platform to a Beowulf .50 caliber. The combination of the Beowulf and the Hornady XTP in 350 grain is now my favorite for bear. I now have the recipe for loading and get1,600 fps and 2,000 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. At 100 yards, it truly delivers a 1" MOA on a calm day. Admittedly, at 200 yards, the bullet drop is 10.5". All I can say is, for Brown Bear, this rifle can put them down with one shot (assuming well placed). The felt recoil is exactly like a 12 gauge. I have a muzzle break so care must be taken with bystander ears, but also, the break helps with recoil. I was concerned about Alaska having an issue with the M4 platform but there was no problem. I can tell you that carrying it all day is a delight next to my Ruger M77 MKII. Make certain your magazine is plugged to the appropriate capacity for local hunting laws.

So very similar to my 30-30. I’m not a gun nut so don’t know a hell of a lot about guns and ammo but I’m under the impression 30-30 rounds are blunt mainly because 30-30 rifles (mainly lever action) have tubular magazines where you push rounds in bullet tip against the base/primer of previous round loaded into the tubular magazine. (With a side gate). A pointy bullet tip could theoretically accidentally fire the round ahead of it in the magazine.

So many guys have been sold on the idea that they need high BC bullets in all circumstances, and it just isn't true. Inside 300 yards, it just doesn't make any practical difference. Even JVB here sells that RN Partition (BC of .361) a bit short. Fired at 2700 fps, it's still just above 2k fps at 300 yards. A 180 gr Accubond with it's very high BC of .507, fired at 2700 fps, is just below 2200 fps at 300 yards. It's a certainty that no animal will notice a difference between being hit by either of those. I'd hunt a coastal brown the same way I hunt cape buffalo - the trigger gets pulled when the animal is under 100 yards, and preferably under 50 yards. It vastly improves the probability of a 1-shot kill. A wounded bear or cape buffalo will either set up an ambush and lie in wait, or hunt you down and kill you. A wounded moose won't, though it may charge you if you're close enough and it perceives you're a threat.

Strive to be the best and you will get better. Think about it when you are not hunting. Look at this guys hands, he goes and does this stuff, he gets better every year, his teaching will get better every year too. So listen to what he says. 100-200 yards with a partition out of an 06? My dads shot 2 mule deer at 600 yards with 100 grain hornady interlocks in 25-06, and dropped them. That partitiion holds together better than an interlock. It should kill everything in north america within 400 yards, and deer out to 800

So did I hear: all those animals taken with an .06 in bygone years really aren’t dead? Or did I hear: all modern animals now come with thicker hides, and built in radar?

As fast as brown bears can run..... any distance under 100 yards is "kissing distance."

Norma Oryx 180gr gets my vote. I can stack a dime on 5 shot groups with my loads. Ive got better accuracy out of them than any nosler or sierra Ive bought.

That's a hunting bullet!! They do great on game. Target bullets are a different animal.! Don't put down hunting bullets. Also depends on the weapons system and the person behind the trigger.

Sir. Not true that that RN bullet is only "good within" 100 yds, maybe stretch to 200.(180gr. I assume) I don't agree, just because I know! I also used in my .270 BRNO ZKK 600, the 150 gr Hornady RN and 160gr RN Nosler Partition. and Solid Base. In ALL cases, test your bullet drop yourself up to 300 m, every 50 m. Use a long box with the aiming point at the top. Zero at 100 yds or m, move further back every 50 yds/m up to the distance where you will limit your shots on game. Every time measure the bullet drop in cm or inches, not only in min. or milrads. (Learn also to indicate aiming or impact point in inches) (So much fun to tell someone in inches and they have no clue what goes on, understand only the ballistic tables and scope settings). No pun intended, modern is much more accurate. Test the velocity through a cronograph, up to 300m, to get your real velocity. All caliber bullets (larger than.375 H&H) loose around 150 to 200 ft/s at 100m and up to 500 ft/s at about between 200 and 300m. Conventional bullets perform best at around 2200 f/s, mushroom better for deeper penetration, even if the jacket is separated. Do your own tests, I did mine since a half century ago, with 5 gal. cans filled with water, wet compressed paper etc. The velocity since I bought a cronograph. Trust the advice of gray haired men with real experience. I am South African, born and hunted in the Bushveld mainly, where ballistics don't count, heavy for caliber RN bullets counted. Enjoy the testing and shooting.
