@Anna K I am that person, and I realise that u need to be inauthentic in such situations. But although it keeps the peace, it does make me feel empty inside and detracted from what I stand for. On the flip side, being real only makes enemies who make things difficult for you/want u out. If u have any insights on how to deal with this, it would be highly appreciated. Cz I’ve researched a ton and couldn’t find solid answers
@adilnaik22174 жыл бұрын
@Anna K hey thanks for replying and I really appreciate your insights! I’m 25, and these are my 2 cents - If I’m opinionated, then I try to have a reasonable basis for it. Although having honest opinions is important, giving one out all the time isn’t. Because in any situation, assuming even that I’m 100% right, my opinion is not the most important thing. For eg, if a friend were to show me an item (a pair of shoes, for example) they bought recently that they absolutely love and ask for my opinion (but I don’t like it), a younger me in the spirit of ‘keeping it real’ would say “i think it’s shit. But if u like it, that’s cool.” That’s because my awareness was so little, or my ego so big, that I saw my chance to speak in every situation as a moment of truth (when in reality my words/facts were entirely inconsequential, especially to the other person). Or maybe they were Important, but there’s other things at play too (that I completely miss). Like my friend being a totally different person with a different perspective, that their opinion might be right/justified from their perspective, their different preferences, different emotionality, subtext of the conversation etc. Sure I was being true to myself, but in an immature way. With some maturity, I realize there are other better responses. In this example, I can just tell my friend the things I like about that item (colour of the shoe) instead of telling them that I overall dislike it. And I wouldn’t be any less ‘real’ by adopting this method. It takes some humility and emotional awareness/social skills, all of which I lack. But I’m gonna work on it. Lastly, here’s a relevant, short, amazing chapter from Ben Franklin’s autobiography that I came across literally 12 hours ago. You might find it interesting - en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Autobiography_of_Benjamin_Franklin/Section_Thirty_Nine )
@adilnaik22174 жыл бұрын
@Anna K also, it might seem like I was answering my own question above, but where I really lack insight is politics in non-social situations. Work is for earning money, but your chances for advancement get limited if you are not rather agreeable with the prevelant social hierarchy (whether u like it or not). I was involved in some unpaid volunteering as another example. I wanted to make a difference, and so did the others involved. But being very bold and outright with my distinct opinions got the others against me, despite it not affecting their work in any way. I could do my own thing and they could do theirs instead of wasting time stirring up drama (there was practically nothing I needed from the organisation in terms of support/resources, my only purpose to join was to contribute, to be part of the resource and provide service to people could reach out to me for help). Thing is, they hate you, never have strong reasons for hating you, but keep trying to find reasons till they have enough. Drawing a parallel to the above part in Ben franklin’s autobiography, I would say it’s because as human beings, what brings us together is a common, more foreign, mutually disagreeable outsider. It’s always an ‘us vs. them’. And I don’t enjoy being part of just any group of people just for the heck of it. Sorry for the long read!

Chad is always talking about being a marine on social media. The dude barely made it through marine corp boot camp because he couldn’t follow basic instructions and had a lot of attitude. Three months after completing boot camp, he was kicked out of the marine corp. he never saw combat. He never did shit Alex was also a Marine. Wanna know what he did? He was the top Marine in his boot camp class and then he served 5 years in MARSOC, which is Marine Special Operations-they’re pure black ops killers. The MOST elite of the Marine Corps. His twin brother also served alongside him in MARSOC. Alex never told producers of the bachelorette that he was special operations. He just said he was a marine. The producers would have absolutely made that a big part of his story had they known. Alex never said ONE word about his special ops backgrounds. I’ll take the guy who humbly stays quiet about his badass background over the guy who tries to talk about being a BadAzz marine when he was actually a thrown-out fuck up
