Best Classes for New Players? EverQuest

A few years ago I got a friend to finally try Everquest (he played EQ2 for years). He chose Rogue because he read they were the easiest class. Yeah, my friend really likes soloing so that was like the worst choice he could have made.

This video is not about the easiest solo class. Its about the easiest class to just hop into if you are brandnew. That means "learning curve". I agree with the list... honestly that list could have been any class, save the bard maybe, and been wholey accurate.

I remember grouping in High Keep back in the day and Rogues in the groups were accused of pickpocketing the mobs as we were fighting them lol

I don't know if I agree with this. I've started EQ in 2000 with rogue and felt so powerless and undesired, I almost quit because game was too hard. Fortunately I rerolled Shaman and everyone loved me because I bring so much to groups. So my advice is EQ is fun because of grouping, so pick an easy but useful class that suit with your play style.

When I first played EQ in 1999 I played a ranger it was hard but I got him to level 70 around when POP came out. Then I created a Shaman really enjoyable especially making sow potions to sell. Those were great memories.

Druid was the easiest to play for me. It’s jack of all trades, master of none, but can fill many roles and was great for travelling. Solo was fun, but grouping was awesome, especialy when group mates realize that a skilled druid keeps everyone alive

Dude, you look so young to have been playing EQ1 when we were - in 1999 and from there onwards. So, colour me envious! But you’ll probably remember how difficult EQ1 was, and how all later MMORPGs were so much easier, with much better graphics & audio, but all were so much less interesting. Even EQ1 was made so much simpler by 2004. I played Bard & Rogue from 1999 - but seems like a couple of decades ago now.

Back when Vallon Zek was new I role a rogue. I used to pick the guards pockets every time I was running out of the zone. I'd also snag some coin off the giants as I ran past them too. Even when someone was killing them. I never made it obvious though. I would not put rogues as easy to new players. They did take a good bit of skill to master, even in groups, which they became more and more dependent upon as the rogue gained levels. I would say that necros, SKs, mages or wizards to be newbie friendly. The learning curve is a lot lower on those classes. This does not mean that the newbie will play them well though.

I'm a little confused why you called necromancers slow soloers? Necros are often times the best soloers in the game, depending on which era, but they're never far from the top. And thanks to lich they generally feel like the *fastest* soloers to me. Sure, a mage could probably get a single kill faster than a necro, by nuking it down... But then they have to sit for twice as long as the necro to get their Mana back.

It depends. Like if you are doing undead, necros are super fast. But for general mobs, mana efficient root rotting does take awhile per kill. Arguably the best dot of splurt takes 1.6min to run it's course.

They ended up changing the pickpocket mechanic whereby there was a separate pool of loot so that he mobs weren't bled dry by rogues.

Back in 2000/1 my bro and I used to duo paw (sk-mag). We always let toons join us and rotated loot on the basis of 5plat or a gem. When rogues joined the group we told them If a mob came up dry, your out.

@@subibrothersbrewing6598 That was a completely understandable and reasonable approach. The mechanic was broken for some time allowing Rogues to 'ninja-loot' all the good items.

Hello Ion Blaze, new subscriber. Thank you for the videos! I'll be getting back into EQ most likely. But can you maybe do a video about p99? I hear it often but know next to nothing about it. Is it live? Is it a private server? How to connect? What are the rules/expansions/economy/etc? I just hear p99 mentioned a lot but seems hard to find any info/guides about it. I'm actually working on a big video soon that will explain it a bit more. But P99 is free to play emulation server of early EverQuest. It just goes up to Velious and tries to recreate what EverQuest used to be like in 1999-2000. It's a much more difficult & slower version of the game to play. I personally feel like I had more fun playing there because of the challenge but it's also much more of a time sink. Everything takes longer. It's also capped. It unnerved me to know that all the hours I was putting in was going to end in a character that would never progress past Lvl 60 in Velious and you can't transfer a character off of the server onto a Live server that actually goes farther in expansions.

My favorite classes that i thought where best for new players where the ones that where easiest to use and could solo such as shaman - beastlord - necromancer- shadowknight - bard all could solo or be useful in groups

Monks are not a good beginner class either because they are expected to be pullers. Most pullers are required to have an extensive knowledge of zones. Yes they are not reliant upon gear but they actually do require a lot of gear to be good. "best melee soloer" is like saying the best of the worst.

Agree monk dps very easy, but pulling is one the most challenging role of EQ. That said you can slowly learn it and very exciting to progress

Why oh why are druids not on this list? The only two classes I'd suggest for a new player is druid or mage.

Yeah you could definitely make an argument for them. I just feel that druids have a more abilities juggle than other classes.

Mage, Necro and Druid all three would be mine. Hell, my first class was a Warrior and I did fine after killing my poor chanter friend a million times, myself a billion times and causing a zillion trains.

@@IonBlaze1 With harmony, tracking, ports, sow and levitate, evac, solid nukes and dots, top of the line snares and roots you can't go wrong. oh did I mention they can heal almost as good a shaman?

I'm wondering if these class ratings are based solely on TLP environments? I'm wondering because that necromancer description is a bit off. I recall in November of 99 where Necros in their 20s were taking down Sand Giants in Oasis. Level 20 Necro taking down Aviak Avocets (level 29 mob in South Karana) as well. And it only got better from there. I don't have a ton of experience with Necro from the ground up (I played one as a primary alt from TSS thru SoF and she's still 80) but I soloed most of my epics (1.0, 1.5, 2.0) with no issues. I asked the first question because I'm actually surprised you didn't recommend Druid. Strong soloability and group utility.

Lol rogue is like the hardest class to play right and solo is almost impossible but they do make groups faster if they have a good tank… why are good tanks hard to find in mmos

1st all... Druid have the wolf form self only 2 mana per tick. Then Protect of the Glades, 6 mana per tick. They really good when you get higher levels. 2nd things shaman get cannibalize and regeneration or torpor you can do both or torpor... You see what I am saying? (Cannibalize dance). Annnd... what are you talk about.... necro has the weak pet... That is is absurd. Level 49+ pets get the vampire touch. Shaman get the weak pets - basic pets (no offense. Shaman buff their pets... stronk - I love shaman pet but they weak as f*ck). Apples and Oranges - I seen necro kick ass, I seen shaman kick ass. Lastly... why the rogue? The enchanter is far better then the rogue. Charm. Rune. Mesmerized. Memory blur. Clarity line of spells. Leech mana form pc or npc. I am done. Rant off.

Those people camping and killing mobs have no right to any loot on any mob. You got to the mob first. You just chose to leave it alive and take the loot. Nothing wrong with that. If anything, they should flag mobs to show when they've been picked.

I would suggest taking Rogue off of the list. Without group support they are practically the hardest class in the game to solo. Simple yes, but to be a new player coming in you will feel extremely reliant on others and not enjoy playing alone.

Definitely monk over rogue as a beginner class though if people learn youre new at the game they may remove you from the party and get an experienced monk instead because they don't want the liability. Mage over Necro because it's the brain dead pet class while Necro requires you to think and has actual gameplay. I would probably pick Druid over ALL of these. Can solo, get groups as a healer, sow, teleports, utility. Much easier to learn the game on. I've never seen someone call rogue a beginner friendly class. Only people who hate themselves play rogues or rangers.
