@elnubnub The whole thing is rather foolish to begin with. Companions seem fine for 60 card Constructed but they seem incredibly antithetical to Commander to begin with. I still don't see why they're having it function at all. Considering that the Companions limit your choice of Commander before you've even started building the deck, at that point you are in fact building around the Companion and not the Commander. In which case what was the point?

​@@rakdos36 Zirda is part of a lot of two/three cards combos (immediately infinite with basalt monolith, for example) and would always be part of your starting hand. I could totally see a Kenrith/Zirda "activated abilities matter" deck becoming an actual thing (since it would immediately substitute power artifact and heartsones by the virtue of starting always in your hand), but it would require a little bit of brewing to make it work. It won't probably be a Tier 1 deck (and would be worse that a straight Zirda deck if boros was up to par with the other color pairs), but I won't immediately dismiss it.

I'll just start by saying I'm not a fan of the mechanic. Starting with 2 already not being usable and the limited options for the rest. Also salty that despite "outside the game" being allowed for these cards, wishes and other cards that reference outside the game still dont work as intended.

Lurrus is by far my favorite. I have honestly began construction of my Karlov deck to try and include Lurrus as a companion. Being able to recast powerful cards like Animate Dead, Dance of the Dead, Soul Sisters and effects like Seal of Cleansing and Soul-Guide Lantern lets you reuse and abuse all of these effects. Keep in mind it ONLY AFFECTS PERMANENT CARDS. That means cards like Ad Nauseam can still be in the deck. The main draw back I have seen is the finishing power with this level of play. You lose out on Bolas' Citadel and Aetherflux, but also powerful cards like Necropotence. I would love to text Karlov as Karlov + Lurrus, but with 'Rona virus it's a bit hard.

I'm already changing my zacama deck for zirda. Makes all of his abilites cost one thereby doubling the abilites he can use right off the bat. Also making it Voltron cause it decreases the cost of equip abilities.

No, because the sarting deck had to be 120 cards to meet its companion requirement but in commander, as the only magic format, has strict deck size of 100 cards. not one more or less. In every other magic format it would be possible to fulfill this requirement.

If you have Jegantha as companion in a Najeela deck, you essentially have an infinite combat steps combo from the command zone.

You will need to give Jegantha and Najeela vigilance if you want to attack with them during those infinite combat steps, but you could also just attack with other creatures that have vigilance, or use pingers and look at it more as an infinite untaps engine. You could even get infinite "start of combat" triggers.

Yes it is. Your general is part of the deck. In commander your deck have to have exactly 100 cards. Thats why you need to have 1 general + 99 other cards, because you general is included in the 100 cards you have to run.

One of them essentially starts in the opening hand of literally every UR+ deck in existence and the other doesn't. If your deck is stone cold to a 1/3 that locks out your commander, the deck probably needs adjustments.

@@praius7960 it's not that it might lock my deck out, I mean I know there's removal but in Death&Taxes decks or Azorius decks that card could stay for awhile and even combo with other hate cards. Even if you do remove it at some point as a two drop that locks down like that it's rather much and can be well protected. So what happens to decks that use their commander as the key to ignition or Voltron decks? True you can have removal but not all decks are gonna run alot of removal like others and as said it's not hard to give that 1/3 protection in decks that would run it. I get Lutri can basically start in the hand of any deck that COULD play him but some me and my playgroup even discussed is that why would we? So what if he's a free card if he isn't serving a purpose in the deck why put it in? Sure he copy's a spell from the grave but would you run the other in Ur-Dragon tribal just cause you could? Sure it's a free card but it's stupid really that would be the only reason. As it stands we have around 4 decks in our play group that could run the otter but only one of our players said they'd love to have him, and it's the player playing the deck that actually makes use of Lutri's copy ability. The rule's committee should have banned the companion ability not the card itself, yes that might be a bit more complicated but doable, I mean there isnt even a sideboard in commander where these are supposed to be in, so it's already breaking a rule of the format so why allow the Abilities or even all companions at all?

Jegantha has to be my favorite. It upgrades a ton of more focused or casual 5C decks while not providing a direct upgrade for the 5C cEDH decks out there. Plus, that synergy with Horde of Notions is crazy!! Horde gets killed? No problem, you'll only ever have to pay the commander tax. Horde's "revive an elemental" ability costs WUBRG? 'The best ramp spells cost 2 or less' ...kodama's reach Cultivate Explosive vegetation (all 3 of them :p) Solemn simulacrum Wood elves Burnished hart... Yes, you miss on solring, rampant growth, steve, crop rotation...but there's PLENTY of premium ramp in 3 or more. 3 or more is very easy to afford in any commander deck in blue and green, actually. My favorite is zegana.

Horde of Notions (as far as I know) is compatible with the highest amount of companions. Of the eight usable companions in EDH, Horde of Notions fits with six of them: Jegantha, Keruga, Zirda, Obosh, Kaheera and, of course, Umori

It would be interesting to build Nekusar without even converted mana spells, but such is it, and I will pass. Too many spells I like falling outside of the requirement. The dinosaur hippo seems interesting and amusingly flavorful, though I don't find it enticing enough to use in any of my Simic, Sultai, Temur, Bant, 4-color, or 5-color builds.

For Kaheera I decided to go with Marisi, Breaker of the Coils going Cat tribal. Vigilance and +1/+1 with kaheera + King of the pride +2/+1 and swinging wide with numerous low drop cats or with cats with evasion such as Sabertooth Nishoba is pretty neat. Only downside i see right now is board wipes, still trying to figure that out.

I agree that Nekusar is pretty good for Obosh, and that it’s hard to ramp with him as a companion. That’s why I’m building Ikra and Ludevic. With them, you get access to Xyris aka Snekusar and regular Nekusar, the green tutors to supplement the black tutor suite for consistency, 1 cmc ramp like Carpet of Flowers and dorks, and the best part: sitting down with 3 legendary creatures face up on the table at the start of the game! It’s taken precedent over my other projects at this point.

I'm planning on building Nightmare Tribal with Morophon as the Commander and Kaheera as the companion. I think the only card I'm going to miss is Sakura Tribe Elder. Pretty much the rest of the deck seems fine with Kaheera's deck limitation and is very happy with its bonus.

My goal is to find the best partner pair to add a companion to. Only a few of the companions are possible, but I am unsure which would be best. Keruga is an easy include to any Kydele+ deck. Obash is an easy include into Vial Smasher (Thank you Mitch). I would probably put Umori in Thrasios and Tymna as an excuse to run Flash.

Using Kaheera in my Gishath deck will require some minimal adjustments, but it can be done. My Elsha deck can't use any of the companions in its color, so that blows. None of the cards for my Syr Gwyn deck work either. So...companions are a busy for me for the most part.

Now, I do have a small opinion on Lutri in that I both agree and disagree on its ruling. I agree that the card would be overpowered in any blue/red deck and would be a free card for them all. I agree on all the reasons why it was banned. However, I think they were quite harsh with the card. Perhaps they should have just "limited" it, in a sense. Simply have the ruling "This card can not be your Companion." I feel that would eliminate all the negative effects this card brings to the format while also allowing people to still play with it as a commander or even in the 99. That being said, I am not well versed in the way the ruling committee thinks, and perhaps they thought of it and didn't want to have the hassle, or open up the format to the possibility of "limited" or "semi-banned" cards.

The best commander for Zirda is absolutely Samut. Gives all your activated ability creatures haste, and is a perfect target for all that delicious cheap equipment, AND untaps all your ability creatures too!

Apart from Kaheera in a tribal deck, I think most of these don't outweigh their restrictions to use them as companions. I'm still pretty hyped about these cards, because many of them are great as commanders or just in the 99. Personally, I'm gonna rebuild my equipment deck around Zirda as the commander.

i feel companions is a very missed opportunity and can be fixed in 2 easy steps!!!! 1. change hybrid mana to be more inclusive. an example would be the beloved otter. with the change to allow hybrid mana to be OR for commander identity color( if it is hybrind R/G it could be played in any deck with red or greed in it, not needing both mana in color identity) the otter can be in 24/32 color combinations( including colorless as a color combo). this might not fully unban the otter but it would open up design space by making the companions to be less powerful but playable in more decks. 2. the requirement does not need to be this restrictive. an example of this could be your deck cant controll any 2,3 drops. this greatly stops ramp and would be easy to see if someone was cheating (easier than seeing if someone plays 2 sol rings in their deck). with the addition of the first rule you you could make the restriction a lot less restrictive because you would be giving companions to almost all decks, allowing you to make them more impactful. in conclusion, free the otter and open up design space and make more brewing fun and decks.

Honestly, Jegantha should just be the commander. Without Companion, It's a 5-color commander that taps for 5. Same goes for most of these, honestly.

I like Jegantha in a Ramos deck, like maybe the charms deck. It's really easy to meet the requirement and having a mana dork that in most cases single-handedly casts a spell could be quite good. There would be less need to activate Ramos' ability, so he would just end up getting huge, which isn't a bad thing at all. RIP the free Progenitus cast though.

The issue with Kadena and Keruga is that a LOT of good morph creatures are 2 cmc. So you'd basically be losing a lot of good morph creatures in order to get card draw, in a deck that you don't really need more card draw in. You're already drawing constantly (especially if you have a flash enabler to morph every turn), so keruga doesn't really seem worth it for that restriction to me.

Why didn't they just ban Lutri as a companion and leave him alone in the 99 or as a commander? Basically if you pull a Lutri there is no way to actually play it. I don't believe someone playing it in Standard as a companion and maybe a deck comes up that just copies things down the road but why did they make Lutri's companion this if they knew they were probably gonna ban it in commander. Just make it say have 20 instant's or sorcerer's in your starting deck. It makes no sense to print this card.

Still firmly against the concept of adding companions into the Commander Format. It just seems more like a money grab than something to genuinely add to the game. How they changed the rules to be able to include these cards aside, a few of these are less 'alternative way of playing' & more this is just a must have card such as with Golos decks.

Zirda combos best with Gemstone Array. It’s an artifact that you pay for 2 and it gains a charge counter. Then you could remove a charge counter (without needing to tap) and add one mana of any color. This means all mana you have with zirda out is all colors and the best part is that it allows you to stockpile mana and save for later. This is especially powerful when you have mana rocks since that means their colorless mana is also technically any color.

My problem with Kaheera for my Gishath deck (The one you built actually) is I have to take out all the humans who are pretty much all ramp which I need for a deck that has an 8 mana commander, especially since Ghishath already has vigilance

Of course, if youre playing Commander with your friends instead of an official setting, you could always make sure your group is okay with changing the rules so you can play Lutri as a commander or have more than 100 cards for Yorion.

Just ask your playgroup if you can run Lutri in the 99/as companion. If you have a theme deck that fits it...they shouldnt have a problem.

Honestly, I don't think any of the companions are worth the effort at all. You can only cast them one. Countered? Sucks to be you. Using some of them as commanders could lead to some cool brews but the actual mechanic can't companion just sucks.

I was really down on keruga because the effect is kinda boring, until I realized it's perfect for my kruphix big creatures deck, as I was needing to make that deck more casual anyways.

Technically, Umori could work with Pharika, then as long as all your creatures/artifacts also have enchantment type, you can have three types of permanents in your deck.

I've already brewed a deck around Gyruda with Wrexial as the commander. It has sea creature tribal elements as well as casting and stealing cards from graveyards. The only downside to the deck is that I had to put pretty much every 2 mana rock available in the deck.

I really think they made the companion requirements way too strict, I don't think any of them are worth limiting your deck so much just for basically one extra creature in your starting hand. They are all pretty good in the 99 and some are great commanders, but the companion mechanic is a big miss imo.

I honestly dont see many people caring to build around companions. At least for me they all seem real unexciting and not really worth it to play in any deck. I rather just build a good deck then around one card. That's what the commander is for.

Why does the companion have to be the same colors and your Commander? If you are playing it as a companion, doesn't it exist outside your deck and therefore would not need to meet the deckbuilding restrictions for color identity.
