Best Controller Layout for Smash Ultimate Competitive Play

I know that I'm about a year and a half late to this video, but I figured it would probably be a decent idea, since I have had a lot of people ask me about my controller setup, so here is what I think is the best controller layout for Smash Ultimate Competitive Play.
I wasn't able to include everything in the video that I wanted to talk about, but wanted to keep the video concise, while also giving all of the necessary info.

I would rather use c-stick for smash attacks, but I wish there was a option for the stick sensitivity to be none, so I would never input a smash attack when using the main stick

Is it weird that i have two shoulder buttons set to jump so i can short hop easier? I still mostly shorthop but just tapping one of them but for some combos its easier for two of them to be set

Huh, only differences between yours and mine is for me, stick sensitivity is set to normal and the right analog stick to Smash Attacks. Though, I'm curious. What about arcade sticks?

I have my grab set to my X bind and there will be times that a smash attack comes out instead of a grab. Does anyone know why that happens? Btw I'm not fat fingering the A button when this happens

My problem is I like to play Melee too so I don't want to change default control scheme since it would screw me up in Melee... But having a shoulder button mapped to jump is objectively a lot better than default...

@@callmemich you need to do short hop for combos and land quickly to continue with the stage control, is just other tool to use, you don't really need L & R for shield, only one button is enough

Why do you think the gamecube controller is better than the Pro Controller? I had some problems with the transition at first (but found a nice setup to make the transition easy), but now that I'm equally familiar with both, I can't imagine going back to gamecube. Shoulder short hopping is so much easier on the pro controller!

It's preference, many players come from Melee which was for gamecube and are extremely used to play smash bros with that controller. But if we're honest here the only advantage the gamecube controller has over the pro controller is the octagonal gates.

As far as I can tell, the GC controller has 2 advantages: 1. Less input delay, and its timing is consistent (as opposed to the pro controller, which has inconsistent input delay when wireless and more input delay than GC when wired). This won't matter if you're a casual, but if you're playing at the highest level a few milliseconds can make a big difference. 2. Muscle memory from previous smash games. The Switch Pro Controller has a different stick layout than both the Wii and Wii U equivalents, while the GCN has always been available for Smash and probably always will. If you played a previous Smash game with the GC controller, you'll be used to it already and will have an easier time transitioning to the new smash game.

@SuperIceCream - Pixel Worlds kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJPKgpeDa7mWe68 Based on this, GCN is usually faster than wired pro, and mostly the same with a VERY small advantage over wireless pro in a low noise environment (so in a tournament venue full of smartphones and other controllers, wireless pro controller will probably be slower). Also Zackray switched from a pro controller to a gamecube controller specifically because he had problems with the input delay.

I have an incredibly weird control setup and I would honestly like to know if there are any intrinsic disadvantages to it. I use pro controller and have attack and special set to ZL and L, jump on R, shield on ZR, and grab on A. I don’t use B, X, or Y. All the other settings are the same as in the video (tilt stick, tap jump off, rumble off, no A/B smashes, high sensitivity). Is there anything in this setup that poses a significant problem?

Great tips in the vid, however I prefer the pro controller. My main gripe about GC is putting the B button a mile away from X and Y.

I believe the point is to increase your grab range, not to make your grab quicker.

Technically the pro controller has a few frames less of input delay, but overall it mainly comes down to personal preference.

Look up pivot cancels! They're very easy, just from a run input the analog stick in the opposite direction you are running, and flick the c stick in the direction you were originally running. You will slide a little as you do the forward tilt!
