Good Free Alternatives (that I use professionally every day): Sidechain = STFU EQ = TDR Nova Vocal AIr = Roth Air Tuning - Melda MAutoPitch Pitching = Graillon Saturation = just got to bedroom producers blog there's lots of good ones, my faves are Krush, BPB saturator, Mod sound "More" and FerricTDS Multiband = Quadracom Fun flavour = chow tape, valhalla space modulator, Synths = Vital. just use Vital. All problems solved! Odin 2 is ok too.

If you want more control over how you filter down your sample library and find similar sounds (by timbre, shape, pitch/key etc) I'd highly recommend Sononym -- I started with that several years ago and recently picked up XO and I actually think they work really well in tandem.

XO is my favorite plugin, probably ever. Not only the "space" is great, but also the sequencer for drums. Makes it really easy to come up with new interesting drum patterns because it has a thing called "beat combiner" where every of your 8 drum channels can choose from a few patterns, and you can choose them for each sample individually. Obviously you still have the "normal" step sequencer where you can program in your patterns or modify the "pre-made" patterns to your liking. Also you can "replace" all of your samples at once with other similar samples, you can lock those you like so they are not replaced etc. It's like most of us would usually do it, but all at the same time, which gives a much better "big picture" of how it'll sound like. If you accidentally replaced a sample you liked, that's no problem either because there's a history alongside the "similarity meter". I haven't used anything else for the entirety of my drums since i have this thing. Oh and obviously you can have seperate outputs so you can route every sample to a seperate mixer track. If you get this one, definitely create your template where you have XO perfectly incorporated like you'd want it. Because doing the routing everytime would be quite annoying.
@ElectroMikeBirch

+1 for XO. I purchased it a while back -- at a higher price, mind you -- and it's the best money I've ever spent as a producer. Saves me SO MUCH TIME building out drum kits and sequences! And it ends up finding all kinds of cool samples that I wouldn't necessarily have thought to use, but that were buried in a folder somewhere on my computer.

I like Arousor for a distressor emulation. It's on sale for 150. its made by the company that makes the distressor and I like that it has knobs to control the attack and release times instead of buttons. There's a demo!

I tested Arouser too. That's another good emulation with more advanced control. I don't like that I can't save presets within Arouser (I like to mark presets with DB reduction), but Arouser does offer more flexibility and sounds similar to the Softube plug.

Great stuff here dude! Your demo of XO is swaying me some more towards getting it. Am I better off using the ones I’ve downloaded over the past few years, you think?
@SolStateMusic

They included XO stock library sounds fine - and there is a lot of them - I just prefer using all my own samples which I've hand picked over the years cause I've already pre-filtered those. It's very easy to toggle between using XO sounds and/or your sounds so you can decide what you like.

@briancase6180
@briancase6180 2 жыл бұрын
I think the problem you're having is two-fold: first, your kicks are very likely way too long. There's a good video on this from deadmau; even he had to be told this by his friend Steve Duda. Second, you need to hear a kick in context. At first, you do not have the experience to choose a kick in isolation. That's what I found. I would choose a kick for it's sound by itself and then find it was a mess in context. Learn first before using a kick designer. You'll progress much, much faster. Just use kick samples from wherever (believe me, your DAW comes with enough) and edit them with the DAW tools to make them *shorter.* One you've designed kicks that are short and punchy in context, you can start to experiment with longer kicks.

If you are "not having fun editing things", just use samples! Making your kicks isn't necessarily superior, but some people love it.

@@SolStateMusic Yeah, I think the first step should be editing samples and *looking* at the waveforms. Get familiar. Then later you use the shaper plugins because you'll know what to listen for and you can be intentional about it. The poster who said he designed kicks and then was disappointed with the results in a mix kind of speaks to my point: you can't be intentional about it until you understand the fundamentals. Go for shorter kicks until you understand when a longer one makes sense. Shorter pretty much *always* works.

I think it's perfect for someone who wants to buy analog synths one day, loves vintage synths sounds, or loves presets. I own a (fusssy) Juno-106, and I don't think the V collection sounds analog, but it definitely gets the vibe across. I think they have a demo, so try it.

You could also look at KORG's plugins on sale atm, or Roland tho they go by subscription and not one-off payment. Dexed is also a great DX7 emulation for free. Just depends what kind of sound you want really

depends on how you use it. if you‘re more into using presets or just slightly saturating things with less controls, then no. but if you‘re all about altering your sounds with more personal control, then yes. the modulation options have extended even more

I did for linear phase mode. Try A/B test with Saturn on bass vs Saturn 2 (with LP mode on). Both should be in multiband mode with a freq split in lower octaves (say 200hz). There is a noticeable increase in power in that 2-4 octaves. If you're not super in to mixing/mastering you're prob fine with the original Saturn.

I feel like for smart EQ you should heavily consider Gullfoss by Soundtheory over Soothe 2. It’s far better and actually never sounds bad

Fuuck no, gulfoss is cool but also loses all character because it makes everything super clean. Use with caution imo. Soothe all the way tho

I actually found it to be the opposite lol 😂. Soothe 2 for me kills sounds really quick but gullfoss I just use to clean up midrange stuff and slightly boost the highs. I also use the Gullfoss Master plugin. Just makes everything sound a bit better. I think I’ve never gone over 30%, so yea my default setting is just 15-20% on “tame” parameter. It makes all the difference🙏👍

Soothe2 is more useful on instruments and busses, whereas Gulfoss can add that AI cleanliness to your master bus in a sophisticated fashion. If either sound bad to you, play with how hard you’re hitting them, mix amount, etc.. Both are incredible AI plugins.
