Offering my opinion on the best all-around EDC knife out there (around the time of this posting). This video is geared primarily towards the "one and done-rs" looking for that one EDC knife that will last them for years. Honestly though, this knife is great for pretty much anyone.

An excellent assessment! I've never had one but I can say the points you make really do make a great case for a perfect edc knife. I've also heard other reviwers say the same about the sage 5. Great video 👍

The sage is a fantastic knife.. Before I could convince myself spend the money on one I got a Kershaw Swerve on sale (I'm cheap) and I'd say for a budget knife it's a solid option as well.. Although I wish the lock release was on the outside of the fold like the Sage rather than on the inside.

Yeah the Tenacious is a great entry knife, but it's a bit bigger and heavier than the Sage 5 and for not a ton more money you get a much better steel, as you noted. I will say a linerlock is sometimes easier for non knife folks than a compression lock, at least at first. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have one of the G10/carbon versions and I carry it a lot. I have many other knives so there is a rotation, but it is one of my all time favorites. The design and function are just about perfect. Nice video!!

Oooooh man! You’re opening the door to some real grouch ass comments….EVEN THOUGH you proclaimed many many times it’s just an opinion! Hahaha And here’s my inconsequential 2 cents… First I think this should go up as an open tag, I would LOVE to see what other channels would pick! Second…I would have a hard time nominating just one, as I’m sure you did, however your valid criteria for “availability” makes a strong point against one of my choices….and the other I don’t currently own sooooo… I guess a response from me would be pointless hahaha! But I’m going to try to get the specific knife I have in mind. Great topic bud! I love that you broke everything down for a larger audience, I forget that these videos aren’t specifically for people deep in the hobby

Hahaha, well this one has been on my mind for a while. I don't mind if people disagree, that's the fun and more voices in the discussion help everyone. I'd love to see you take it on as an open tag! Narrowing to just one, as you said, isn't easy, especially these days with how much is out there. I hope it's helpful to that broader set of folks. Thanks as always man!

I have the regular Sage 5 and a Sage 1 and love them. They are comfortable and useful knives. I am guessing the Sage 5 LW has the same feel in hand. I agree totally about the leaf shaped blade as well. The infomercial cut was genius 👏👏👏

Sage 1 is a cool knife too, another one that was under the radar for a long time, still is I guess. I like the LW versions, but I know some folks don't like FRN. Lol, glad you watched long enough to catch the infomercial clip. That one pleased me. 😀

It sure looks like a fabulous knife. I’m skeptical that you can convince non-knife folks to spend $100+ for a pocket knife. That being said, with this wonderful video you probably just sold many Sages. Great overview.

Hi Jon, I agree on the Chaparral as being a near equal in terms of quality. I prefer a bit more cutting edge as well as the compression lock, but it's a close one!! Thanks very much for watching!

I can't argue with your logic here Brad. Ironically I have been looking into a new Spydie EDC. I have a Tenacious (my first), Manix 2 and Lil Native. I have been going back and forth between the Sage 5 and the Para 3. Yeah Para 3's are sometimes hard to find... My main issue (as usual) is price. I don't have many knives over $100. When I do have the green it usually goes to a Civivi, CRKT or CJRB. Never been a big fan of FRN either and the G10 or CF adds another $40. But as usual you are on point! Great review and information. Thanks!

Hi Kevin! Spydercos core lineup us pretty strong, all those you mention bring something unique to the table. I understand the dislike of FRN, I wasn't a fan initially either, but it's grown on me. Thanks for checking out the vid and hope all is well in your new home!

My first Spyderco was a Native 5 LW. Then a Para 3 LW. And then I found the Sage 5 LW. One guess as to which Spyderco I carry the most? Indeed, the Sage 5. I'm carrying it today (it's been my EDC for the past week). I think it's a little difficult for some to wrap their heads around the fact that there's a giant hole in the knife 🍩 but with time in-hand that concern should quickly fade. Great points throughout the video.

Hi Rob! Right on! Great to hear you love your Sage 5 LW as much as I do. The overall look of Spydercos and the hole, can be off-putting initially, it was to me back in the day, but after you own one or two you get it. Thanks for watching and for the support!

Excellent points. Spyderco makes great knives. I have a Para 3 that is a super nice tool. It is so easy to use and manipulate. Although honestly I think it looks hideous, but it's ugliness is overcome but its usefulness. :D I think the Sage 5 looks a lot better. Keep up the great videos.

While I would probably go with a bugout if I only had one, the sage does seem like great option. There are days I definitely think about whether i could just have one, and I don’t know that I could. But I probably will downsize someday… probably…

Now Erin, let's not get carried away here, I mean one knife for each day of the week is a minimum requirement. 😄 Seriously though, the Bugout is certainly a great choice and checks a lot of boxes for me too (I do hate cleaning Axis locks however). Appreciate you watching and commenting!

For a harder working blade with real knifechops with both history and makers you can't beat a KA-BAR Dozier Hunter Lockback in D2 Tool Steel and it is easier to get and 1/3 the price.
