2:46 I think when he heard “Fengxian is gone” he took that as she was dead? (Or at least that’s what I think) 4:57 that was a “You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you” scene if I ever saw one 😢 9:13 What this implies is that Lakan (Who can only see the faces of those he loves) cares greatly for only three people in his life.😢 SEE YOU NEXT SEASON!!

He only sees maomao and fengxian's face.. he doesn't see his uncle's face, but he is the only piece he recognized as the character for the black "chariot" in xiangqi so he is able to distinguish him from everyone else. However, maomao doesn't know this, probably because his great uncle didn't know it too, so she may have assumed the reason he can recognize his uncle is that he can see his face.

The people who Maomao cherishes, Loumen, old lady, Meimei, Juka, Pairin, perhaps her mother, Fengxian, need closure and this her way of perhaps not healing but closure so all of them can move forward. Lakan was self aware of his issues that his Uncle Loumen tried to help him. But in his arrogance he did not try to really understand those around him. His failure to connect either Fengxian or understand her communications with him. After THREE years he finally understood. He was not malicious just lazy and neglectful - abandoning Fengxian dooming her to her shameful state and disease. Maomao understands it was not all his fault so she does not hate him but also has no affection for him. His stupidity does not excuse him nor does she forgive him, but does not see him as malicious. He may even a grown more self aware ergo his clumsy attempts to connect with his daughter whose mother he ignored for 3 critical years. Recall her comment she lost ability for love in Fengxian womb. Lakan’s obsession and joy in games he ignored and forgot about Fengxian even though she wrote so many letters. He was not evil but he has so much to atone for. 3 years 3 years 3 years 3 years and did nothing to maintain connection. Again in 1000 days he did not contact Fengxian.

That's why he was always fascinated with MaoMao from the first time he sae her, and even if he hadn't seen her in years, her face stands out for the sole reason, that's it's the only one that he can see 😭

This season took my breath away. I did not think I could develop sympathy for Lakan. He was not a villain but I did think he was a deeply morally flawed. The finale exploded that view and really revealed the tragedy that many contributed towards and Lakan’s real feeling for Fengxian. Meimei’s sacrifice for her dear big sister, Fengxian, and the man she loves, Lakan. Meimei regrets how Fengxian’s pride demanded that the brothel hide her and Maomao from Lakan. This pride delayed for so long their happiness. I hope Meimei who cared for Fengxian and Maomao can eventually get a happy ending as well but their world can be very cruel. Lakan story was a sad one on how he was too naive but Maomao reunited her parents and he see her as how she allways was.

I did a watchalong on Discord and binge-watched most of it a while back, before I learned about react content on YT 😅 , it's still fresh in my mind for me to re-watch sadly.
