My gosh. Where have I been. This is great exercise. Theoretically I have heard thousand of times that I should sing without throat tension. But I was not aware, i thought problem was not in neck and throat and was looking somewhere. This exercise directly make me experience and aware firstly that I am singing with tension and secondly gives me chance to sing without it. All notes become so effortless. Its like I am not even trying anything, I just think or wish any pitch and vocal cord tunes to wished note with its own 😂 Great. Thank you.

It will if you let your voice suck! Let it crack and wobble as you focus on keeping those muscles off. That tension got programmed in with singing so you'll have to make some non-singing sounds to find their off switch.

Great question Danny (complaint really!). I don't know what your 5 month comment refers to (I posted this video a few weeks ago) but in this video I wrote that I don't often sing with such little muscle involvement. That's important. That dopey sound is due to the release of your throat and lifter muscles - but I don't want to sing like that and neither do you. So practice this exercise daily but sing with sounds you like. The point of the exercise is to MINIMIZE muscles - not turn them off.

Yes - it's no different then learning to speak French and Spanish. One language shouldn't affect the other (called an accent) but it often does. So work towards each singing style being it's own behavior and then you'll be able to mix various styles together if you like. It takes a lot of practice - but variety is very good for the voice.

Thank you Mark! Great video; I took notes and am practicing. I just had a quick question. Is it possible that after working in a call center for 10 years my larynx tends to stay high and not allow me to use lower register? My voice feels weak and doesn't resonate when speaking on normal conversation. I've had this issuer for past 3-4 years. Thank you for your time!
@voicelessondotcom9 жыл бұрын
Josh Merrill It's typical for particular behaviors to take over after an extended period of reinforcement. I'm assuming you're speaking in a slightly affected way at the call center (voice lifted and pleasant) and like moving into a new city - it's easy to pick up the accented speech of the locals. The good news is that these are just behaviors - and behavior can be changed. If you want to resonate when speaking you'll have to be mindful of allowing it whenever possible. Your larynx tends to stay high because of the sound you were promoting. So if you promote a richer, deeper sound - your larynx will lower automatically. There's no need to tell it to stay down. Stay focused on the sound you want to create.
@joshmerrill9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply Mark! What are the best exercises to help cultivate this? Thank you again for your time!! I know you're busy.
@voicelessondotcom9 жыл бұрын
ANY exercise is good for re-setting your vocal behavior if that is your intention. Remember - your intention at the call center was to "sound" a certain way. You did it long enough and it stuck. The same thing can happen in reverse. Exercises speed that process because they are more challenging. So stay focused on the sound you want - not the behavior.

Your thumb doesn't make the larynx remain neutral - you do. Your thumb is just there as a feedback tool to let you know what's going on. The goal is to sing in such a way that doesn't cause your larynx to rise. Try singing with a deep "yawny" sound - that usually helps.

Voice Lesson.com Hello Mark, I apologize in advance for bothering you with an off-topic question. I hurt my voice a couple of days ago during a heated argument, I still sound close to normal when speaking but the left side of my voicebox feels a little off. This worries me a little. What do you recommend I do to minimize possible damage? To clarify, I am not really hoarse or anything but it just feels like something's off, no pain just a unfamiliar slightly annoying tense sensation.
@thesilkpainter9 жыл бұрын
Voice Lesson.com @ eric santiago: Does not hurt to yawn: actually a good exercises to release muscle tension in the laryngeal 'elevators'. All skeletal muscle yoi are working with so the same stuff applies as does with sports if you activate the agonists, the antagonists should relax. ...so: Mark: I do not undetsatnd why you are thinking of an ongoin tug of war? The more likely scenario is that the larynx and pharynx sits ina cerain habitual position that forces soe uscles to stretch too long wheras other muscle groups contract and build up hypertonicity too long. BTW: I am ony engaging with ideas here because I think your videos are in general really good! Also though: the larynx does rise with high pitch..the thyroid tilts forward to lengthen the VFs and the larynx rises as aprt of shortening the pharynx to create a different ( shorter) body of resonance. I understand currently that if you think of singing as not a 'natural' movement (i.e. reflexive as the swallow and the yawn are), then when you are raising te larynx the barin might 'think' that it is supposed to execute a swallow: which means really : the larynx WANTS to close. You can work on 'retraction' like ESTILL does. Any how: many thanks for the videos! I am going through them all adapting my style of teaching: mind you: I am a speech therapist, not a singing teacher and still I find your teaching great to use! Thank you
@voicelessondotcom9 жыл бұрын
thesilkpainter Welcome to my KZbin channel! Please notice that I reply to all who ask for my advice - which means I read everybody's posts. I have worked for years to build a channel that is an alternative to the standard approaches for voice. I place an equal amount of attention on the physiology and the psychology of voice use. There are videos delving into both subject areas but no one video can cover everything. I spent a lot of time producing these videos and I am very protective of my message. So please excuse me if I seem agitated as I reprimand you for your seemingly well intended engagement of ideas. In this video I said "I DON'T recommend starting a tug of war." I bring it up because that's exactly what struggling singers unconsciously do - they activate every muscle available to sing and then wonder why they feel so bad afterwards. It is a psychological battle between desire and insecurity (the very reason for the habitual posture of the larynx and pharynx you site) - and the voice takes the brunt of the battle. The same thing occurred as Sungazer got into a heated argument. His body was flooded with adrenaline and cortisol, causing his muscles to overcompensate in contraction and straining those supporting the left side of his larynx. In short - he had to push past his repression in order to state his position on whatever he was arguing about. It is the same problem for athletes. Siting hypertonicity to an athlete who is fearing he'll blow the game if he messes up is not addressing the source of the problem. Neither is suggesting a lip trill for hyper function. There is a tremendous difference between teaching and telling someone what you know. It drives me crazy when anonymous people like yourself site text book solutions for real life situations. The larynx may - or may not rise with higher pitches. Singing is much more complex than you suggest - the whereabouts of the larynx completely depends on the desired timbre (not range). And it's that desired timbre (not the conscious positioning of the larynx) that should be the focus of any singer. As I stated in an earlier reply - there's no harm in yawning - it's just not necessary to become fixated on a low larynx. Focusing on the desired sound while promoting a comfortable environment is the best approach for gaining usable new vocal skills. I would be more than happy to engage your ideas in a private forum. My email is mbaxter@voicelesson.com. Please introduce yourself. I would also suggest you create a KZbin channel of your own if you haven't already done so. That way you can understand how frustrating it is to have other professionals present confusing perspectives against a message that singing is an inclusive rather than an exclusive activity.

+Voice Lesson.com how to hit high notes without straining? I tried this tips you gave and i cant go higher than c5 and above.
@nguyenchinh73497 жыл бұрын
Of course you can't now, but if you keep raising your larynx for high notes, you'll damage your vocal cord. Keep practicing with a netural larynx and your range will extend, it sounds much better when you can hit high notes with good larynx position.

My Adam's apple goes up when I sing high even though the muscles under the chin are inactive.. I don't have any idea what to do, how to let get of the tension in my throat. And I experience sore throat if I sing, say, for more than half an our, but that's most likely because of the chronic laryngitis

Edwin Myers Nothing in your body can go up without muscles being active and your laryngitis and soreness is caused by the same muscles tensing. Lay down on your back and sing the absolute most comfortable pitch you can find. That's how every pitch should feel.

I know.. But there's something wrong, I can't sing without the discomfort in my throat... It feels like I'm wearing up my voice.. Even though I do warm ups. There is literally no way for me to sing without discomfort... Even in my "tessitura" I feel discomfort if I sing more than say a minute...
@voicelessondotcom10 жыл бұрын
Edwin Myers The location of your problem is in your brain - meaning you have adopted a behavior full of tensions for singing. You know you can speak for longer then a minute without any discomfort. Those are the exact same muscles in use. So why aren't you sore after speaking? Because you're not "thinking" of it as singing. Use the same behavior you do to speak to learn how to sing with less muscle constriction. "Talk" through a verse of a song. Then talk with a little melody - then a little more sustain. Gradually increase how musical you allow your voice to become and you will find a line gets crossed where muscles kick in and you get sore. Stay on the "talking" side of that line.

Voice Lesson.com i know that, and that is true! But I can't speak too much either))) see I have laryngitis of the back of the throat, and talking makes my throat sore too))) that's just awesome:D

Voice Lesson.com you're an awesome teacher, I love the way you encourage to sing and you are also a great singer, I wish I'd found you 2 years ago when I used to pushhh my throat to "growl", I thought that was growing when in fact I was just yelling... But the funny thing is that my vocal folds after all that have remained good as new:) and that yelling didn't cause any fatigue:) what's killing my voice though is the oesophagitis which caused laryngitis which is why my voice gets worn easily. I'm actively treating my stomach right now so I hope one day I'll be able to sing without any pain...

I can do the siren excersice and somehow it sound connected but my larynx still goes up though the muscles under the chin are inactive.
@voicelessondotcom9 жыл бұрын
Nhan Ho If you know your larynx is lifting it doesn't matter if you don't feel tension under your chin - it's not lifting by magic. So focus on having your larynx remain in its resting position as you siren up and you'll develop more coordination.

Voice Lesson.com Thank you! I can make my larynx drop down by take a deep breath but cant keep it remain in that position.
@voicelessondotcom9 жыл бұрын
Of course - that's what happens when anybody inhales. There's no reason to keep it in that lower position - it's not natural.

There're some videos say that master the yawn to stabilize the larynx. Will that help?
@voicelessondotcom9 жыл бұрын
Help what? I know it is very confusing with so much information about singing available - but you have to ask a few very important questions first, before any advice can be helpful. What vocal sound are you seeking? What do you feel is wrong with your singing now? Do you want the sound of the person you are asking advice from? There is no one sound for singing (opera, pop, rock, jazz, Indian, gospel, etc.) and every sound has a different set of behaviors required. I focus on very basic skills for singers with exercises and advice that are not specific to one style. Stabilizing your larynx with the muscles that are used to yawn will create a very deep sound (used in classical singing). If you focus on keeping your larynx low you will only produce that deep sound. I have a feeling you are interested in other styles of music so I do not recommend you focus on yawning. A neutral or relaxed position - what I suggest in this video - would be much better.

Is it normal for my voice to break?
@voicelessondotcom8 жыл бұрын
Yes. Absolutely normal. It's just a moment where you lack coordination. Don't avoid - instead refocus on what you meant to sing without adding any extra effort.

Yes, let gravity do it's thing...nature. Many great singers were not very intelligent, in the sense that they were more instinctive and spontaneous in their singing and not overanalytical.

This is great I really need help with keeping my lyranx neutral so thank you for your help! I have a question though. How can I apply this technique with the neutral lyranx WHEN I AM SINGING A SONG? It would mean a lot if you could help with this.
@voicelessondotcom10 жыл бұрын
Practicing with a focus on maintaining a neutral larynx will help develop a better connection between you and your instrument. However, singing with a focus on maintaining a neutral larynx will NOT help build a connection between you and your listeners. Every song has a message and it's never "sing with a neutral larynx!" Let the lyrics of a song guide your voice. Not everything we sing will be neutral - but starting with a neutral throat means everything we sing won't be tense. Let the song move you!
