Finally! I get to dig out the French Onion Soup Bowls we bought when we lived in Germany, have had them packed away for years and just never got around to using them, now my wife is seriously ill (Stage 4 Cancer) and I am trying to cook things that made her happy...and French Onion Soup is one of them, so thus rookie cook is watching a KZbin and getting a quick education. Thank You! BTW I know you are not from Massachusetts, just by your pronunciation of W......... sauce!👨🏻🍳

Excellent demo. Last time I made this I roasted beef bones and veggies to make my own broth/ stock. It was to die for. I wish I could find a beef stock I liked. I make my own chicken stock for the same reason. Don't throw those ends away from celery, carrots, onions, throw them in a freezer bag. Perfect for veggies you're going to toss after cooking anyway. Thanks Buck and Camera Girl lol :o)

I’ve been looking for a good onion soup recipe that wasn’t geared for a PhD in cookin. This is the all around best one I’ve seen. My brother is a vegetarian and won’t even bring me a bottle of Lea and Perrins from the store because it has fish 🐠 in it. I drink the stuff. Great recipe.

For one, I wouldn't add garlic that early into the process as the garlic burns easily and give you off flavors. Instead add the garlic once the onions are cooked to a desired color or state. Vegetable or Chicken stock would be a good option to allow the onion flavor to shine. Beef stock may overwhelm the caramelised onion flavor. I actually like the sliced bread crouton for this as I do like to have further bread to dip into the soup. Nothing wrong with salad style croutons (a la caesar salad crouton).

Damn, Chef Buck. Well done. Your presentation through the whole video is really great, too.

I made the soup minus the wine and worstershire sauce (because I don't have them and didn't want to buy them). Damn fine recipe. It took a whole lot longer to caramelize the onions on mine stove though. I have no idea why. Oh well. Like you said, can't rush it. It was very tasty. I'll make it again.

Hey Buck, it looked great. That was the perfect french onion soup bowl. I wonder how it would taste with caraway seeds. hey, I saw your movie Magnolia, it was a hoot. I did not like the singing part but the rest of it was full of wonderful characters and emotions. I loved the music in the middle that kept repeating like a Philip Glass composition that tied the short scenes together and little details thrown in deliberately and they would go by so fast you almost didn't notice them and it made me wonder what else was I missing. Next time you watch it check out the goofy little car they had macy driving and see how Tom Cruise is sweating in his under arms when he raises his arms while giving a speech. Nobody sweats in the movies, they had to make a deliberate choice to do that. It was a fun movie even without the frogs. I found it online on YT where somebody had uploaded it but it was severely cropped on the top and sides so when they did the closeup of the woman screaming at the pharmacy it was scary as heck as all I saw was a closeup of an open mouth and teeth yelling on the screen. it was the neatest scene in the whole movie oh yeah, and thumbs up on the worcestireshire sauce,LOL
@ChefBuckRecipes7 жыл бұрын
I never get tired of watching Magnolia--and I LOVE the singing part; that entire soundtrack is one of the best...I've been a big fan of the singer Aimee Mann ever since. I think Magnolia is my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson film, followed in order or preference by There Will Be Blood, Hard Eight, Punch Drunk Love, and Boogie Nights ...the rest of his I never loved enough to re-watch
@ChefBuckRecipes7 жыл бұрын
I like that caraway idea...I'm gonna try that next time...I've got a bunch of those seeds and definitely don't use them enough

Once they started singing then one of them was obligated to start tap dancing and doing jazz hands. I think the frogs will concur. I rest my case.

This looks delightful. Never thought to add Worcestershire sauce or Italian seasonings. Ever had any issues with garlic burning if you add it that soon? I would think it would burn too easy especially with that long of a cooking time. Also, "patience, grasshopper" That made me laugh 😋💜

@ChefBuckRecipes7 жыл бұрын
adding the garlic, Italian seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce adds a lot of flavor...also using a mix of freshly grated cheese is a good idea...I always try to put a bit of Parmesan in the mix...I'm surprised how bland an onion soup can sometimes be at a restaurant ...it's one of those dishes where it's either fantastic or just a big wet bowl of onions, and that's down to how well the onions have been caramelized

I have a question about coconut oil I noticed your court going to boil is solid I bought some and my son told me to not refrigerate it and it's more liquidy why is yours more solid do you refrigerate it and can you thank you
@ChefBuckRecipes7 жыл бұрын
naw ...we don't refrigerate the coconut oi, just keep it on the counter...the consistency of the oil all depends on the temperature inside our apartment...it's been a very mild summer here in Seattle, so far, but I think that is about to change...in the summer months when our apartment heats up, our coconut oil turns to liquid

I was wondering if you'd do a French Onion Soup video! Lately I've been caramelizing onions in my slow cooker, overnight (8-10 hours on Low)...since I do 3+ pounds at a time. (The only drawback to this method, is the house smells like cooked onions, I get hungry, and end up snacking out of the fridge in the middle of the night...Sorry for that digression.) I like how your soup turned out...I only add the cheese toasties if I'm serving to company, otherwise I dunk my cheese toasts, and slurp...Thumbs Up!!

My pan was awfully crammed with onion! which made the caramelization take a bit longer than it would have if I'd used a wider skillet--but I like using lots of onion, too
