It is sad for me to say this but I never had a best friend in my entire life. I cannot understand many things about friendship since I am more of a lone wolf type. Idk why is so hard for everybody to believe the end, I had friends in the same situation, controlling partners that made them hurt their closest friends in order to get them go away, making easier the manipulation. Isolation is always the first step in that kind of relationship. That doesn't excuse her behavior, my friends in that situation had to apologize to their friends and even so they lost many good friends, but the context is really important, low self-esteem, fear to be alone, parents in the same kind of relationship, big plans for future and even kids play a huge deal. And Derek is nothing more than a background character mentioned in passing until the very end and all we get is "when Alison broke up with him, he immediately started a fight, called her names, and showed a side of him that I(OP) hadn't seen before." A fight that OP was there for since she stayed with Alison until he got home and we don't have any information about it. We don't know if he denied anything, confirmed anything, accused them of trying to ruin his reputation, or anything like that. All we have is "he started a fight." Scapegoat or not that's not something you do to your fiance that you're days away from marrying. There's no mention of him trying to figure out what's wrong, trying to work it out, or begging, just straight into a fight. He may very well be a scapegoat for Alison to salvage her reputation with her friends and family, but he did himself no favors in his reaction. Granted, all we have to go on is OP's side of the story so she could very well be glossing over the part where he broke into tear wondering what was wrong and begging to make things right. You'd think she would have included that in the story though.
