Given she was getting more and more aggressive and then pulled this stunt, she was probably planning on pushing this guy to violence then using it against him to get full custody and just write him off as if he was dead. Nah OP isn’t in the wrong. Ex has proven to be an unfit parent and an unhinged person. She willingly made these awful, petty and selfish choices and didn’t even consider their son . It says alot that the boy doesn’t want to go back to his mother

So she set you up like a bowling pin, knocks you over, leaves a petty note, and doesn't expect you to retaliate in one way or another? This woman has a really low opinion of you, she doesn't think you're as tough as you actually are, and she mistakes kindness for weakness. This is her own damn fault. And to hell with her mother.

So... how did the Ex think telling her BF that OP was dead was going to work out? I mean, OP is still alive. So at some point the fact that he is, and is still involved with her son would come out. The son presumably would mention that OP exists, right? Unless they were planning to disappear with the son in the near future?

A bad person cannot be a good parent. The most important piece of parenting is behaving well, because children will absorb everything you do and start mimicking your behavior. Just because she "cares" about her child, doesn't mean she's a good parent - she's just a walking life support person for the child, nothing else.
@BunnyTheOverlord

@@BunnyTheOverlordtwo options, either it's something really outside of kid (they won't know how you act at work, if you only do it at work) or the kid is smart enough and just adds those behaviour to "do not do" list. So beyond what the ex-wife was thinking with saying dad was dead, what did she expect OP to do when she left that note? Clearly they’re not compatible so I don’t think she was wanting him to get jealous over her new bf. I assume she was hoping he’d just give up and take an L over his missed party but since their son is at stake, he obviously can’t just leave it. And if she was trying to sprit him away then he’d be immediately calling the cops for kidnapping when his son wasn’t returned. The only other thing I can think of is that mom was hoping that introducing the boyfriend would bring a different father figure and she could use that to push OP out of her son’s life. But she just had to try to rub it in OP’s face because she’s petty. Classic

They both seem petty but the ex-wife is on another level. Plus lying to her bf about the kid and marital status, trying to get back at the OP in various ways as well as that physical assault just shows the kind of partner she is. Moreover she neglected her son while she happily had fun with her bf and even told her son not to snitch on her. The son is better off in full custody of the OP.

I dunno how petty that is of the OP... in separate instance it seems bad, but when he had to live with her as wife, then as ex, and saw how much bs she's pulling, it's not unreasonable to get mad like that. It wasn't "I'm gonna kill/hurt you" mad but like "there's 100 things why this person is shitty, nr 1" type which is mostly acceptable?

From the prologue, I think that ex-wife's mental health took a turn for the worst in the last couple of years of the marriage. Remember he stared saying that they suddenly couldn't talk without arguing and screaming at each other? I'm wondering if that's when something happened to her that knocked her brain out of whack or something. She needs therapy and possibly a CAT scan of her head.

I know it always sounds like a joke but seriously adopt a pet for a few years before you have kids. It’s not a perfect science but how your partner treats your pet and divides up the responsibilities is a huge indicator of how parenting will probably go. If your partner is mean, cruel or ignores your pet that’s probably how they are gonna treat your kids. If you find yourself always feeding the pet taking it for walks or scooping the litterbox prepare to be carrying the bulk of the care responsibilities. As for my dad idk how my mom didn’t see the red flags as he kicked their dogs and cats with glee and she thought he would be a great dad! Now he’s locked up. 🙂 As for my husband he absolutely doted on my cat and even made him homemade cat friendly birthday cakes every year. 😂😂😂 And now he’s totally in love with our daughter and he’s an amazing cook and the chores are divided up evenly. Please do a pet trial run before having kids.

OP was really wrong of how he handled things before he put down his foot. He let his ex doormated him too much and it led to this event. I'm glad that he finally decided to stop and got full custody of their son. A bad wife is equal to a bad mom. He even said that she was like this before. So I don't get why he would marry her when she had so many red flags to begin with. Let this be a lesson to us all. Look for the red flags and take them seriously.

Honestly, I am still wondering if pettiness is also a trait of narcissism, cause I am still trying to figure out what this ex-wife's endgame is. Although given how the MIL reacted by trying to guilt trip OP and give him crap, I have a hunch the rotten apple did not fall far from the tree. OP, while I am glad you and your son are safe, I still think you deserved a smack to the noggin, cause if you had paid attention to the red flags sooner, you won't even be in this predicament. While you cannot turn back time, I still applaud you for not giving in to your ex's games.

People who write these posts must be considerably better people than I am. Their ex acts awful twords them and their children until the op of the story finally retaliates (usually in a way not really that bad and frequently in a pretty understandable manner) and then they are verbally attacked by the ex, along with the ex's friends and family and even their own sometimes (despite it not being their business) and then the OP will feel guilty or bad about it, a lot of times forgive them, say things to defend the ex (he said she could be careless sometimes but not really a bad mother - which is incorrect going off the behavior described- she's a mother)! I've had my share of awful ex's and break ups after some pretty awful situations and.... As I said, I Guess these people are better than me.... Because I don't feel bad, guilty, worried, etc twords them.... but i do wish some thing bad upon the cruel ex.... And that each year the bad is exponentially increased.
