STORY 1: honestly if it is true that she ruined other friendships between her mutuals with OP because she chose to believe her lying cheating boyfriend, I wouldn’t be so easy to forgive her. The friendship ended between them she didn’t need to drag other people and drags OP‘s name through the mud based on her boyfriend’s lies. She only believed OP because her boyfriend cheated on her. She practically bet on the wrong horse and ruined a friendship and the friends reputation in the process.

I don’t know what to think. I had an ex who was a really good manipulator and liar, and I’ll bet the story he told to OP’s former friend was very convincing with perfect details. He probably added a, “She was really embarrassed when I turned her down and _begged_ me not to tell you,” and an, “I know, I couldn’t believe it either!” when she expressed disbelief. He must have made it _good_, to get her to completely ditch her best friend without even asking her what happened. He must have been extremely believable and she must have been very, very hurt. I’m sure he went out of his way to “comfort” her afterward. I think the real bad guy is him. People like that (maybe narcissistic, maybe just manipulative for fun) really know how to lie and create a story that works for them. Coming up with the preemptive strike, where they have to create a story using the same basic facts, but that absolutely damns the well-meaning friend, is one of their best skills. The fact that the story was so good that it both absolutely crushed the ex friend and kept the others from the group from even questioning it shows more about him than about anyone else. These people thrive around good, decent people who would never even think of lying like that. On the other hand, I am in a position where a friend completely cut me off and I don’t even know why. It’s soul crushing. But the fact that she won’t even talk to me means she is very hurt about something she thinks I did. I actually don’t think of her as the bad guy-I think the person who knowingly lied to her is. And if she apologized for it and wanted to start talking again, I couldn’t say no. I’m more mad at myself for not doing more to talk to _her_. I hope that everyone (who isn’t the lying ex) in this story sees this as a learning experience about how, no matter what you think you know, you should always listen to the other person’s side of a story. And, honestly, just that people like that liar, who are very charming, very convincing, and who would destroy someone’s like without even blinking, exist.

I love the last story. It's a very accurate picture of true love. The initial infatuation fades, but when you stick it out and develop deeper relationship that is based on friendship and mutual respect, you can develop a bond that is truly beautiful. I’m surprised at the amount of people angry with the friends and best friend. Think about it for a minute. If the boyfriend _wasn’t_ lying, and OP really did hit on him, then the best friend was 100% correct in this situation. She didn’t spread lies, she warned her friends about a truth she was told. She wasn’t maliciously smearing OP. I’m a little annoyed with OP not even trying to speak to her friends (except the bff). In a case with no evidence, you are supposed to pick the side you trust more. And even tho they’ve been friends for 12 years, you’re supposed to be much closer with your SO than your bff. The bff did nothing wrong here. It was the evil boyfriend ruining everything from the sidelines.

It also shows why divorcing because of "falling out of love" isn't a good idea. The emotional part of love comes and goes as emotions do. The 'honeymoon phase' is temporary and people get busy. There are going to be rough patches in *any* relationship. The important thing is to maintain the commitment. Honestly, I don't understand why OP and his fiance decided to delay the wedding until they were 'financially stable' in the first place. They were already living together, might as well make it official. Then again, my parents had about as simple a wedding as you can have. No engagement ring, no reception, no honeymoon. Mom made some adjustments to Grandma's wedding dress and Dad showed up in his Sunday best. Close family and friends were in attendance at the church while the local priest officiated. Dad had just recently lost his job and they were both fairly fresh from college and thus broke. But the *marriage* was far more important than the *wedding,* so they made it work.

Meeting up and common interests are great, but I hear stories from people like you that one couple is cute because it's something you like and another couple is dirty because it's not something you're interested in. Also, what is The Sims exactly? Literally playing god and controlling people's lives to the point of driving them mad, killing them, forcing pregnancy and such on them, literally ruining lives, etc. I find the game really disturbing tbh, it's fundamentally a chew toy for psychopaths. I don't mean that to be rude, but there's a major difference between Minecraft or Skyrim where you explore a world on your own and interact vs controlling who's born in it and forcing everything about a sim's life onto them. If you have fun with it, good for you. I personally fail to see how it's fun or cute for couples to meet up and roleplay through it.

Story 1: Friend circles believing one side without even asking for the other side is very common. I've found out the hard way. Any mutual friends who knew me second, I fully expect them to be biased and ignore facts for the person they knew first. I'm extremely wary of 'friend ofs' for that reason.

Story 1: Sometimes forgiveness is less about forgiving the other person and more about letting yourself move on. Holding grudges can be mentally taxing. Sometimes it's better to forgive, not because they deserve it, but because *you* deserve that peace of mind. I also want to say it's ok and it's normal to miss someone even if they're toxic. Despite them, you made it to the other side. You are strong and you will continue to thrive without them.

My best friend of more than a decade is WAY more than a sister to me. She's my partner in crime, my platonic soulmate and i trust her with my life. I already trusted her with so much and she never disappointed me (i hope and think it's the same for her). I would never believe some guy over her. Ever. Some friends you have, OP1, that picked a side without any proof and without listening to your side of the story. Never go back to those people. They are not friends, i'm 100% sure of that.

When I was 24 my ex bff, whom I'd known since jr HS, decided to abruptly & quietly end our friendship, reason unknown. She ignored my calls & texts. When I called our mutual friends they refused to tell me what was going on, under the guise of being neutral. Yet, these "neutral" mutual friends would deliver random messages from the ex bff but wouldn't deliver any for me. I eventually I stopped asking "why", stopped accepting calls from the mutual friends & moved on with my life. It hurt that everyone chose to ice me out without an explanation or clarity. I learned that no matter the history, some people aren't meant to stay in your life forever. And sometimes it's for the best.

I remember confiding in my then pastor about how an engaged elder, whose family I was close with, had been extremely inappropriate towards me. The pastor was later discovered by a few members to be involved in an inappropriate relationship with a younger relative of mine😢, and at some point, decided he needed to discredit me😮‍💨 EVERYTHING I'd ever shared with him in confidence became up for grabs, and the elder's fiancee & family began to trash me publicly to whomever would listen🗣️🗣️🗣️. A year goes by, and the then pregnant WIFE of the elder corners me at church demanding she speak with me😒 I just stood there emotionless, listening to her pour her blubbering heart out about things her cousins had been saying to HER family about her new husband, how embarrassed & humiliated she was feeling, & how her family 'thought' she needed to divorce the perv she'd exposed them all to ASAP. They'd even been disinvited from family functions. And she wanted to know WHY I didn't tell her not to marry him & WHY I 'didn't try harder to convince her' about what I'd told the pastor... I told her that SHE chose to run a very public anti (my name) campaign against me before ever considering any follow-up on what I'd experienced... I was just "a young, jealous uneducated bih who needed to stop 'chasing' her man & get my own life, remember? I reminded her that she KNEW the pastor was passing along a confidential conversation with a congregant (me), but she obviously appreciated the gossip immensely until it turned out to involve her life that time. She wasn't interested in investigating what she'd heard about her fiancee from the source... She was a bridezilla already over 30 who just wanted to have a perfect wedding, so I graciously stepped aside and let her have it. It wasn't my responsibility to keep her husband from flashing her 19-year-old cousin from the window as she used the pool🙃 or for staring into her 21 year old cousin's eyes while he fondled his peanut inside her mom's jeep after she'd gone into the garage to restock sodas DURING their annual family Christmas party🙃 Congrats on the baby girl🎉

Story 1: Keep this woman out of your life. Not only did she turn her back on you, based solely on what her boyfriend told her, but it’s possible that she made your other friends hate you. Story 1: And this is what is meant with the phrase "love is blind" My bestie & I have been friends for 12 years as well & I would hope we would believe each other over a guy. It has happened before too. Around the time I first met her (before we were even really friends but acquaintances) my, now, ex started flirting with her via FB. He never met her & I never mentioned her. She didn't have my number yet so she called a mutual & asked him to take me to her place where she showed me the FB comments & a message he sent her. My heart sank, but I never blamed her. BECAUSE of that day we became almost immediate besties. Choosing a guy over a long friendship that's basically a sisterhood without ever hearing the other side of the story is baffling to me.

First story: OP keeps saying this is my friend of 12 years, this is my best friend of 12 years. It's like a chant and I understand that but the other part of that chant should be.... you were her best friend of 12 years yet she believed her disgusting boyfriend over you. That is what I find so utterly unforgivable. If the friend truly valued the friendship as much as OP she would have stopped and taken the time to calm down. She would have thought rationally about it then did the math. Saying: "OP has been in my life 12 years this boyfriend only a handful of months. Who's words carry more weight here?" The very least the friend could have done was hear OP's side of it, but no she didn't and choose to listen to some scummy dude over her best friend. I wish there was a term similar to 'Bros before hos' but I guess the closest is 'Sisters before Wankers" In short, OP should not accept the friend back because who knows what will happen when the friend gets a new boyfriend and decides OP's word is just not good enough. Sure OP can accept the apology, but when the friend asks for things to go back to the way they were she should say: 'I forgive you, but you chose to believe some random a-hole over me. You choose a moron only in your life a handful of months over a 12-year friendship. I cannot be that friend again, you need to accept that your choice ruined our friendship just as I was forced to accept it when you choose him and turned our other friends against me. I hope this has taught you to value your friendship and you think before you act again.' Then OP needs to walk away and let the friendship die otherwise she is just setting herself up for further pain in the future.

Story 1: I've literally had similar things happen to me throughout school. I don't talk to any of those people anymore. They made their choices. If OP's ex-friend really wants to be friends again, they'll earn it over time, but OP isn't obligated to talk to anyone from that time of her life. You can't just go back to how things used to be right away, and it'll never be the same anyways because what those friends did will always be hanging over all of their heads. First story, I would only accept her friendship again if she agreed to right then in a group call, call all the other mutual friends and explain the situation. Explain that OP did nothing wrong and she really regrets believing him and she didn't realize she was being manipulated by him but now she knows. THAT is what needs to happen in order to put the past in the past. She needs to clear OPs name. And if she's truly sorry and truly loves OP she will not hesitate to do that. Heck I wouldn't accept her apology as genuine at all until she does do that and own up to her mistake. EDIT I wrote this before reading the update. I guess I should wait before commenting next time. But to me that says that her friend truly is sorry. Which is good but I don't know if I'd be able to forgive her either.

Hi Mark, great stories once again. The one common denominator for both stories is lack of communication. Always speak with the people you love. I agree with the first post about cutting the friendship due to the fact that “Friend” turned their mutual friends against OP, and also cutting their in-common friends as they chose “Friend” without ever trying to hear OP’s side of the story. The 2nd story just shows you that communication with each other is as important as love in a relationship. I’m happy for them.

I bet that OP was cuter than most of her friend group. Certain types of girl groups will always very easily turn on a better looking member of that group in a heartbeat. I had a cousin who had this happen a few times and now all of her friends are really good looking. A lot of people think this happens because the cute girls are snooty, some are but I think a lot of times it is just the opposite, cute girls can be catty as hell but certain types of friend groups with lots of not super attractive girls can be twice as viscous. I only say this because not a single one of them asked OP even a single question so it seems like she was a part of that group that was very easily and unceremoniously jettisoned without a second thought. There was something under the surface the whole time, because lets face it an entire girl group turning on someone without even a single of them talking is highly sus.
