When the band was together Louis and Zayn were arguably the closest out of all of them. Louis seemed like a huge comfort to Zayn at a time when he really needed it, probably because he knew his boundaries and knew when to give him space. I'd say thats why their dynamic appears more reserved than others in the band, cause they don't feel the need to force anything.

The only extremely close bonds I sense Is Louis and Zayn, and Harry and Niall. During the start of one direction, Harry and Louis were obviously the closest. But everyone kept sexualizing and shipping them, so I 100% believe that they drifted apart because of that. My favorite friendship will have to be Harry and Niall. I feel like Harry laughs and smiles the most when he's around Niall, and I feel like Niall isn't afraid to be himself around Harry. All you can literally see is pure joy on Harry's face when he's around Niall. They seem to like each other the most from the rest of the group. Both of them seem the most comfortable together as well. Niall gravitates towards Harry and intentionally tries to make him smile or laugh. They both seem more playful, positive, laid back, and free when around each other. I could always sense that Harry and Niall would always hide apart of their true selves but all that shows when they are around each other. There is so much I can say about these two lmao. One direction also had bad management and went through alot together, but all of them were obviously dealing with their personal struggles. Harry would often get sexualized at a young age and especially after he grew up-He was seen as a improper womanizer who loved sleeping around with older women. His management obviously gave everyone in the group certain personality traits or “roles". Harry was assigned as the flirtatious heart-throb and womanizer, which means he really wasn't supposed to be the jokey one. You could tell when Harry was really young in One Direction, he would barely laugh and often attempted to keep a stone face. He seemed distant from the group when he was younger, and during those years he also had extreme stage fright and often aggressively shaked on stage. I'm not saying that Harry never laughed, but it seemed like when he's not around Niall, he tries to keep a natural serious demeanor...Besides Liam, Harry seems like the most sensible and serious one in the group...I would even consider him more sensible and more serious then Liam to a certain extent. My point is, Harry completely changes around Niall and Niall completely changes around him.

i forgot to add this after watching the entire video, so. zayn and louis were unarguably the closest in the band, the boys have said it themselves several times and we fans have caught on to it pretty early on as well. they were literally partners in crime and seemed to spend time with each other the most during behind the scenes etc and they maintained that tight-knit friendship from the fetus days until when zayn left the band. like everyone said, this interview wasn't a fair comparison since in these, louis was trying to give more attention to niall & liam, since they were out of it for some reason, (you could see how zayn wasn't affected by it at all like he normally would cause louis doesn't find the need to particularly focus on zayn to connect with him and that's how tight their bond is) and zayn was in a more comfortable self (which he always seemed to be whenever he's situated close to louis) i really hope you'd react to more zouis videos, they're honestly my favourite duo of all time :)

@@Alexandra-jf4hj Zayn was 100% closest with Louis. From the very start all the way until he left the band. On the Jonathan Ross show, Louis himself said that he was the closest with Zayn (this was after he left the band) and the other boys agreed. They had a tight bond and were partners in crime. They did talk a lot during concerts. Zayn was close with all the boys in different ways, but he had a special bond with Louis that you don’t see with the others. Louis seemed to be the person Zayn would seek out for comfort.

I always saw Zayn and Harry talking on stage with each other and in interviews Harry heard Zayn and they were a lot together also on stage Harry left a space for Zayn to sit, and Louis, Liam and Niall were having their own fun apart from Zayn and Harry. My favorite is Zayn and I always look at him, maybe you don’t but I do and I felt like they never paid attention to Zayn, I mean yes when they were little he had some attention from the others but I didn’t felt that way after they grew up. Zayn's interactions with the band during interviews changed so much through the years, 2011 and 2012 when he was confident, you could see the others being pulled towards him like a magnet, Liam and Niall had an obvious admiration for him, Louis was his equal in mischievousness, Harry admired him and I think was even a bit envious of him (especially in 2011) but not in a mean way, but in a I want to be more like him type of way which was normal as he was the youngest. Zayn was a trend setter in the band, first to get tattoos, first to wear more jewellery, all the others followed. Even the boys said in a interview Zayn was the most stylish. Harry was the most loved and crushed on though, which is understandable. He was literally first labeled as a heart throb and sex figure as a teenager. People seemed to pay attention to Harry the most, but imagine how uncomfortable that must've been for Harry though. I'm not sure where I got this source because I read this years ago and I forgot, but I believe that Zayn said “Liam was like the dad of the group, but I think Harry was the most sensible one.” and “Harry got the most attention from the females." it's something like that. Those things probably weren't EXACTLY what he said but it sounds familiar. *So PLEASE do NOT take my word on this* lmao. I most likely read it online but didn't really pay attention to it. My mind is kind of blank right now. Besides Liam, Harry did seem like the more professional and sensible one even though people know him for acting like a goofball. Him and Zayn always seem like the most serious ones-This statement might sound like dumb shit but it can make sense if you think about it. Liam will always be the dad of the group though, I just see Harry as someone who has a playful side to him...But is sensible and professional. There are plenty of clips where his band mates are acting like crack heads while he's being completely calm. There are moments during interviews where his band mates are acting like idiots but he pays respect to the interviewer and actually pays attention and continue on with the interview. There are moments on where he's ignoring his loud and playful bandmates during interviews and actually tries to pay attention. *He seems like the one who tries to pay attention or focus, is my main point.*

I don't know about interviews but in other places Zayn and Louis' dynamic is shown a lot more. Louis was the one that brought zayn out of his shell and they were practically partners in crime. Zayn has said he was supposed to be the mysterious one while he wasn't always like that and he wanted to engage more, and that is seen in interviews more rather than other moments.

I think that introverts like Zayn will allow the "burden" of the interaction with strangers to fall mostly on their extrovert friends like Louis who will gladly take the responsibility of having to engage outside of their comfort zone on themselves, so that the introvert doesn't feel as much pressure and can feel more comfortable. I know this from personal experience, that if I'm meeting new people and I'm with my friend who's an extrovert, sometimes I'll let them do most of the talking and jump in when I'm feeling up to it and I'm glad to have them there because they know not to put me on the spot, like Louis knew not to put Zayn on the spot and bring attention to him if he didn't want it or was feeling anxious, because they knew each other really well. Louis and Zayn were so close behind the scenes and even said in an interview that they would always talk to each other about their problems and support each other through tough times, and were each other's go-to when they wanted to have fun and get up to some mischief.

Maybe Louis tries to not be into Zayn's space as much, since he knows that Zayn doesn't like to much attention on him. It feels like Louis doesn't try to challenge him, like he does with Liam, to prevent Zayn from being put on the spot. Edit: They were actually super close! in the first interview, there's a possibility that niall was upset or worried about something and louis was trying to get him to lighten up or engage him in the conversation too. that is just how louis works and zayn knows about it. louis and zayn's friendship is beautiful though!

Yeah, I have that feeling too. Like, Louis was more focused on engaging Niall because, maybe, something was worrying or upset him (Niall) beforehand and Louis wanted him to not get too into his (Niall) head. Zayn respected that and was giving them space and time for Niall to feel better

Yeah you see Niall fidgeting and looking down/not smiling a lot, which makes it seem like something happened before the interview that made him either upset or anxious. It looks like Louis kept on looking at Niall to make sure he was okay and trying to add him to the conversation to get his spirits up. Also Louis knows that Zayn doesn’t like to be put on the spot so he is not interacting with him as much so Zayn would be able to answer the questions he wants to

I feel like the fact that these interviews have more people than just Louis and Zayn makes it more difficult to analyze their dynamic cause EVERYONE wants Louis’ attention, and Louis is just one person who’s trying to keep everyone involved (Niall and Liam more so than Zayn here cause Zayn seemed to be alright and enjoying himself just the way he is, while Niall seemed sad and Liam looked out of it, and Louis wants everyone to enjoy themselves so he focused more on them)

God hearing you talk about Zayn wanting to involve himself in the group and in the conversations but not knowing how and when to and struggling with it breaks my heart. I really know what it’s like, there’s not many celebrities that I can relate to in that aspect. Its so hard when your with people and you want to join in so bad and you can see they’re having fun but you just don’t know what to say and when to say it and then you don’t know if they’ll even listen when you do because there’s been so many times when they haven’t so you become more self conscious about talking. And then no one really knows the real you and your personality. because behind closed doors and around people you’re very comfortable with you can be so relaxed and funny but if you’re like me most days you can just wake up and just feel so anxious and you don’t know why and you can’t function like a normal human being no matter how much you want to. Some days can be easier but it really is a rollercoaster, it never fully goes away. I can’t imagine how much your anxiety would be amplified when your famous and in the most famous band at that time! It’s difficult to understand though so I get why other people would think he’s quiet or uninterested so they don’t see any point in talking to him but please if you have anxious friends don’t give up on them! Our minds are going at a millions miles per minute and we’re trying. Even if 95% of the time you don’t get a reaction out of us there could be a moment when we’re feeling confident to talk and when people don’t talk to us because they have been conditioned to not involving us it, to us feels like it’s verifying what we were already previously thinking that no one cares and no ones listening and we go back into our shell 🙃 Anyway sorry for going on a tangent but I just wanted to get across that I completely sympathise with zayn and understand him. I love all the boys and I think their relationships with one another is sweet. I do think that zayn and Louis were close (they’re not on good terms anymore 🥲), but I think it’s kind of harder to pick up in interview settings because that’s probably when zayn isn’t being his usual self. in the first interview I think Niall was feeling a bit sad, kinda, cuz he usually is always laughing especially when Louis does something but in that interview he's just smiling, also Zayn and Louis I think they are more on the behind the scenes kinda friends, Louis said that in interviews he would always make fun of Niall cause he was always down for a good laugh, and I think he doesn't interact with Zayn that much in interviews because he obviously knows what Zayn is dealing with and I genuinely think he doesn't know how to interact with him, like Louis' thing is joking and like that joking might make Zayn uncomfortable ? But the boys always say that Louis and Zayn had the closest relationship in the band, and as they refer to themselves "partner in crime", so yeah don't let Zayn kinda fool you, he's mischievous too, but kinda behind the scenes while Louis is just always mischievous

What you say is flirtatious from Louis, that's something he does when he's paying extra attention to one of them, and that's usually when one of them is tired or seems down, etc., like that's his way of trying to keep them there, to check on them without being touchy-feely about it, but still making sure they're seen. He's always done that, and it's usually always as a protectiveness over the other guys. And like you said, Zayn is more present than most interviews, he's more comfortable, so Louis doesn't need to entice him out of his shell or make sure he's not forgotten or left out so much, whereas Niall does seem quiet and a bit down here, hence why Louis' directing it to him; he's always loved to make Niall laugh, so that's his way of showing affection. Plus, Zayn does have more personal boundaries than the others, always has, and Louis' always respected people's limits, even if he's never given credit for being aware or caring in that regard. Zayn never liked attention on him, so again Louis respected that; he pays him attention, but knows he doesn't want a spotlight on him. And he never actively seemed to want to be too involved in making decisions whenever there was an opening for them to make decisions. Also, whenever on flights and things, Louis and Zayn would fly together and then the other three in a separate plane, for whatever controlling reason, they were kept separate, so Louis is probably making the most of being around the others, too, because when there's not a camera on them for something professional and they're letting loose, you see how close the two of them actually are.

I feel like interviews aren’t the best way to analyze their dynamic. It’s too professional for both of them. With zouis, it’s best when you react to compilations, because these show their true bond whenever they’re not in a professional setting. Like here in the interviews, Zayn and Louis understand each other, they interact whenever it feels right, but it’s not as representative of who they are off camera/when they’re alone.

I am not a directioner but the 1st time i watched all these interviews i felt very bad for zayn they literally never gave him attention or gave him opportunity to speak in our group of friends we have an introvert friend n v knew that she will never speak unless given chance to speak n v always tried to include her in our conversations n she was most intelligent n smart amongst us. The guys pay least attention to the ones they are most friends with in the interviews, like you mentioned Harry and Niall might be not that close and they were the closest in the band, the same with Louis and Zayn, especially at the time of the first interview in this vid. I make this assumption simply based on the fact that they hung up together outside the band activities the most. It feels like they know they need to maintain engaging atmosphere during interviews and they don't have to make any extra efforts towards those they know the best, so they just make sure the others are engaged and comfortable. By "they" I mean Louis and Harry because they seem to be 2 leaders in the band, that's why they're usually split in the interviews like this, otherwise it may not work out. Liam is a leader too but I feel like he's been overshadowed by the guys leadership skills (another aspect he was overshadowed by tbh) and he definitely doesn't accept Harry's leadership, Louis is his guy if he can't be the leader himself. It makes Liam and Harry act as actual brothers, frustrated at each other but still loving. They seem to fall apart after the band took a pause but recently they have communicated quite a few times ,according to Liam, so it means they can keep that bond without having to always be near each other. I like their unlikely friendship) You should check Liam and Harry dynamic some time too))

Max, what is probably not known publicly during the times of these interviews, is that Zayn was going through an eating Disorder. And there was actually a lot of inner struggles in the band. Zayn had wanted to go on a break and that second interview, especially was done within days of Harry and Zayn asking the other guys to go on a hiatus. They were turned down. And there was a lot of distance between Liam, Niall, Louis...who had said no...and Harry and Zayn. So you got it right. There was a lot of things going on between them at this time, differently from momentsnin the past.

Very interesting. See, I never saw it as the other boys didn't pay attention to Zayn in these interviews. But you could be right. Zayn seems happy and engaging and not mad or anything so I don't think he felt overlooked or anything like that. In the first interview I felt Niall was not his usual self and Louis trying to engage him because of that. In the second I don't see anything other than them bantering as usual but mostly with the interviewer. Louis is definitely more tuned into Niall and Liam though. The latter interview has a better vibe but that could be because the first one was a full day kind of setting with one interviewer being replaced by a new one for a long while and they were more tired there. The thing is they were marketed as these normal boys that became like best friends and their roles in the band enhanced that image. It's why they often acted as they did. They played roles and they played them well. That's not to say those roles were fake but it wasn't all they were. When it comes to friendships you can be friends and not be close. They seemed like such close friends during the early years and once you've seen those bonds it's hard to shake off that image. But naturally their friendships changed over the years and who ever they were closest to changed all the time. In the beginning they turned to each other because this was a new exciting thing they all shared and it was them against everything else. As a Louis fan I felt Louis was closest to Harry and Zayn in the beginning and then it changed to Niall and Liam. As they grew and developed their own individual interests they also grew apart (as is natural) and perhaps no longer had that much in common. By 2014 I doubt any of them were very close. Still friends but more colleagues. From what I saw in 2014, Zayn and Louis spent the most time together on tour outside work, what with them both rather staying on the bus together and having their "smoke breaks". Louis and Liam worked the most together writing songs for the band and probably developed their friendship through that.

Yess my favorite reactions!! I relate to Zayn so much being an introvert and having social anxiety so it was nice to hear your analysis. I still think Zouis is an amazing friendship maybe it isn’t shown here but it really is and imo Louis has the best friendship with all the boys! Very late to these comments, but as someone who obsessed over zayn and louis friendship i’ve always noticed that louis understands his boundaries and never oushes him out of his comfort zone and just allows him to go at his own pace. z there’s also one interview that when zayn tries to speak but the interviewer goes “harry’s speaking” in a horriblksh tone, and zayn apologises, louis defends him. i assume he tries to involve zayn but only when zayn wants to, hence understanding the boundaries and introvert personality of zayn. Louis understands them all individually and is ‘playful’ on different levels with each one of them.

You know why zayn doesn't seem to take offence, cz people with anxiety know that these people are behaving that way to the person they become with anxiety, not to the real them.. whom they don't even know 😞.. so they think yeah I deserve it.. only if I could be myself.. but let's just keep trying.. People with anxiety are highly intelligent and observant, they can sense what is happening every second, and so this continuous reinforcement of "I wish I could be me" is what worsens the anxiety and can ultimately even take away ur sanity.. but Zayn has dealt well with it so far.. if I were in that spot light I don't know where I would have been.

Zayn and Louis were definitely the closest in the band. Come on, they called each other brothers, went on holidays together and promised to be on each other's weddings. That's why I feel like Zayn's betrayal hit Louis way too much. But it doesn't even matter what I feel. Louis even in 2021 being openly irritated about their fight in interviews when we all know that Louis doesn't like to talk about personal things publicly tells you everything. He was hurt by him and after that never tried to establish that kind of bond they had with no one else in the band.

I definitely agree with what you said about humor not really being at the forefront of an introverts mind. I am an introvert and love to make people laugh, however, if it is a stranger or someone I don't know as well it is hard for me to say something funny or engaging. I have a lot of social anxiety, and just today I was walking my dogs and an older man that was walking past me said a joke about me having two dogs, and I thought it was funny, but my response was really simple because I felt uncomfortable speaking. After that I felt dumb and like I could have said something more.

yup!! i feel this so much. when you're around unfamiliar people it's almost impossible to function normally. its like a switch goes off and alarm bells are signalling in my mind, and all i can focus on is how i look/what im saying and how to not fuck the interaction up. i worry so much that i stumble and ruin everything sometimes. i avoid people who i think i'd love to be friends with or who i want to talk to because i dont want to make a fool of myelf and sweat through my clothes. but then i worry that people think im rude or unapproachable/unfriendly. you miss out on a lot of fulfilment i think that everyday interactions can give people, even if you do have your closest friends. it also makes mundane, everyday tasks a living nightmare. i wish people could understand social anxiety and how it affects people more. when speaking to someone with social anxiety, even if they're with their other friends, it's often the worst portrayal of who they really are underneath the disorder. thats my personal experience with it :(

It lead to me pushing a lot of people away. I agree with what you said about wishing more people understood it, instead of getting annoyed or thinking that we are just rude and have no personality. If you really want to analyse how zayn is when he is comfortable with people , you should see videos of zarry moments! Zayn with harry styles is a completely different guy! He was soo soo comfortable, enjoyable, flirty, confident with him. at the start of their time as a band zayn was way more talkative and outgoing like he’d always be making jokes and speaking up and stuff but later on because of his anxiety and also because of the fact that the management was making him pretend to be this mysterious bad boy type of person which he really wasn’t, he then became way way more quiet and reserved. if you react to their older interviews or content in general i think you’d actually be surprised how different he was.

Even though Zayn and Louis always were close I think they had a closer bond in the early days. Please look into Harry and Zayn because they were actually much closer than a lot of people think. You could definitely see how much Zayn leaving the band impacted Harry.

I am an introvert and have always had alot of extroverted friends. I usually don't mind at all letting them carry the conversation. Sometimes when I do try to engage, I feel they aren't paying me much attention, but I feel alot of that is not wanting to make me feel uncomfortable. Sometimes fans make a judgment about people and then run with it, once they put people into a box there is no escape for those people. Let’s take Niall for an example, once the fans decided that he is the funny and endearing “little brother” that’s all he became to the eyes of many, I’m not saying that Niall isn’t a nice guy it’s just that was the only thing people could see him as, when this kind of thing happens it stagnates the growth of one’s character. This also applies to their relationships as well, fans always talk about Zayn and Louis’ friendship as something for the books when it really wasn’t to that extent. I mean fans always exaggerate things and I’m also guilty of that but sometimes a little bit of doubt in all our beliefs is good.

I think you made a very good point about Zayn wanting to engage with the guys in interviews. Even the most introverted people still like interacting and being around close friends, interviews were always just a different dynamic than what we saw behind the scenes because Zayn was less comfortable, I suppose.

The thing about Louis and Niall is that they always had a great banter between them and they still do. Whether it was in interviews or just hanging out or even they were on stage, they were like 2 little kids, the type of friends that tend to tease and make fun of each other and annoy each other and then just laugh it all out. In fact, they've even said this in their later interviews after they went solo, "when you look at old interviews of us, you'd always see me and Louis in the corner laughing" ~ Niall...which is true!! And the fact that whatever Louis did would always make Niall laugh a lot so he enjoyed doing it on purpose, just to get out a laugh from Niall! Their friendship is definitely underrated, maybe some day you should react to their friendship, you'd really like it!

Great analysis. I'd like to point out that these videos are from 2014. It's important for 2 reasons: First, it's the year Zayn developped an eating disorder and all of his songs for the album "Four" were rejected. Second reason, by that time, Zayn and Harry grew closer. Starting from late 2012, 1D was "divided" into Harry/Zayn on one side and Louis/Liam on the other. And Niall stayed in neutral territory. They were all friendly with each other but when you look at concerts and backstage footage from that era, 80% of the time Zayn and Harry would gravitate towards each other and stand next to each other. Liam and Louis did the same thing too.

It's just my take...but later in his solo career zayn said in an interview like they were five of them over there and he didn't feel like he is "someone" to strongly put his opinion forward or say whether someone is wrong or right. So he wouldn't speak outloud..just not wanting to come out as a rude or a very full of himself person....and mumbled some of his thoughts instead which the boys didn't pick up on in the commotion. Unlike louis or Liam who if they want to speak something they don't hesitate to cut someone in between.

Idkw but i feel like their bond changed over time they were so close in their fetus era and were partners in crime and Zayn seem to really enjoy what he was doing but later in their career he seemed much more quiet and the the bond with the boys didn't look as close as they were in the starting.
