No, once you buy the router; it's yours. That being said, these are all routers; not modems, which is the device that actually connects you to the internet. From what I understand (I'm new to this crap too, I'm still learning.) a router lets you connect many devices to it and then takes the signals from your many devices (Specifically your WiFi devices, though you can connect Ethernet cable too.) and sends them too your modem, which then sends those "signals" to the internet; and vice versa. Most internet providers will give you a device that is both a modem and a router, and you will rent this device from them for something like $15.00 (Though that may be lower or higher depending on your service provider.) as well as pay for the internet they provide on top of that. If however, you buy your own modem and router; you no longer have to rent their device, and only have to pay for the *access* to the internet your ISP provides. Which in the long run, saves money. However, you should make sure the modem you want is compatible with your ISP; as well as the router you want. And, from what I understand at this point; if you get Fiber Optic Internet, (Which is basically the best internet you can get.) your ISP will provide you with a modem (Which at the moment, I'm under the impression you cannot change to your own modem.) but not a router. Though I'm unsure of that, could just be the one ISP I've talked too so far lol. Hope that helps, because this is driving me nuts. (º_o) Wish someone would just explain it in "English" like I've just attempted to do for you. But no, nothing can ever be easy when it comes to the internet.

Netgear is horrible. Half of the features don't even work and can screw with your connect when enabled. Custom support is nonexistent also.

I use to have Xfinity and using the Asus GT Ax11000, The speeds was very fast when it worked, But Xfinity internet was not reliable, Recently I switched to Att 1GB fiber but i notice the Asus even in Pass-through mode is not as fast as it was with Xfinity, I notice lag when gaming online even with hardwired, Also the wifi is soso not sure what i can do to speed up the Asus router.

The router may distribute the signal wirelessly to your many devices through WIFI, The modem determines the quality and capabilities of the signal before it ever reaches the router. a good router cant help a bad modem, If anything it can smooth over the bumps and fill some cracks, but that's it. (the modem your ISP gave you almost always sucks)
