For the average garage, this is overkill. I haven't recommended it to any of my friends that just use their garage to store their cars. If you are really into your garage then I would definitely suggest forking out the extra cash for the side mount. Just not having all that componentry crowding up your ceiling space is worth it. Then, there's the quiet factor. I say go for it!

Great video! I have some questions: 1. Did you tap into the outlet in the ceiling by using a junction box or splitter to run additional outlets to the garage opener and the extra quad outlet box near the floor? 2. Can you reuse the wiring for some of the devices like the keypad panel outside and the old opener panel to connect the new devices? 3. Like most houses, my garage only has a couple of outlets (one on the ceiling and one on the back wall of the garage, SMH). Is it possible to wire a 12 gauge or lower extension cord from the ceiling to the area where the new opener would be to give it electricity? I've read it isn't recommended but, that outlet's purpose was only to power the garage door opener and nothing else, so I'm trying to figure out if that would be acceptable or not. I also had someone a while back finish my garage door walls because it was only left with tape which was deteriorating due to age and that'll make the job a bit more tedious to run new wiring and add more outlets in the garage. 4. Lastly (and sorry for all the questions), have you had issues with the LED lights in the garage interfering with the garage opener? Does this thing work with factory installed homelink devices in cars? What about the phone app? is it hard to configure"?
@RADGarage2 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Thanks for the questions about the garage updates I made a few years ago. My memory is a bit foggy as far as the specific details but I'll do my best to answer your questions. 1. Yes, we tapped the outlet that was on the ceiling to run the the lights and wall outlet. It was a bit tricky snaking the BX through the tight attic space as the ceiling joists were not cooperating. 2. The electrician did not run new wiring to the exterior keypad panel. The keypad remained the same after the swap to the new opener. 3. This one is a bit out of my league. My gut tells me running an extension cord to the opener is not ideal, but I am not sure. You'd be amazed how a good electrician can find ways to bury wires behind walls without having to create a lot of cuts. The trick is finding one in your area that is easy to work with. This was my brother-in-law so he was very patient with me and all my weird OCD requests. 4. I have no issues with the LED lights interfering wit the garage opener. I have my Audi's homelink set up to the new opener. It is just as straightforward as any other door opener. You get a couple of remote openers and you just use that to configure your homelink. Easy peasy. The phone app is super easy to configure and navigate. It is awesome having the piece of mind of knowing when your door is open or closed wherever you are in the world. I highly recommend.

As for the extension cord reel location, I’ve resorted to a wall mounted 3 outlet power reel (princess auto) near the front of my garage and I use detail guardz in front of the tires to prevent the cord from getting caught. I’m able to get around the whole car with ease. It’s also handy for other projects when there isn’t a car . The 3 outlets on it work well. Another option is OG style ceiling mounted corner of the car setup if you still want overhead.

Something multisided like half of a octagon would look less bulky and the bends would help add some rigidity. costco sells a nice shop light for a garage. I think the brand is mona or something like that. Not the feit. What brand is your garage door? Double hinges?
@RADGarage4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are a LOT of hinges on this door. It is a custom built door by a company in Calgary called Creative Door. If you check out my Instagram (@rad.garage) you'll see some pics of it.

Asakapa It was an upgrade we chose when we built this house back in 2010. I believe it was an extra $2800. More here: www.radgarage.ca/door.html

I just discovered your channel. Looking forward to watching your videos. Amazing garage! I too have the same opener and it's awesome. Can you detail how you painted the rails black. They look really good. Thanks!
@RADGarage4 жыл бұрын
Mike South Hi Mike. Glad you found my channel. I painted the railed by hand with an ordinary small paint brush. No special technique or anything like that, just a matter of time and patience. The paint scratches inside the rails but you don’t really see that.

Hi, I'm a new subscriber and glad to find this channel, congrats for the footage, the nice detailing work and the garage. Since we are great fan of Obsessed Garage stuff ( very nice stuff), I would suggest the Mosmatic Pressure Washer Boom Poles for the final touch. Congrats from Brazil.

Hey Rick. Do you think a $515 upgrade from the builder would be worth it for the 8500w? Builder a new home in yyc and saw your video and thinking about this upgrade. 😂

How did you paint your garage rail? Looks really nice 👍

I just used a really dark grey paint and a nice little paintbrush. Took me a few days.

Sh1t, if that garage was in Calgary Martindale everything would be gone in the middle of the night. Nice garage though. 👍🏻 . The NE is getting shadier at every passing day. Lots of spices here.

I am fortunate that this garage door has the deadbolt and I have a pretty good security system. Not to mention a robust insurance policy!

RAD GARAGE they are spring loaded and keep the door tighter against the opening. Less back and forth=less noise. They are on Amazon.

exhstbearing Interesting. I have like 100 brackets on this door so the cost could add up quickly. Still, thanks for the suggestion.

Very cool my friend. Wasnt aware that something so nice and incognito existed or I would of opted for this unit instead of the one I purchased at the beginning of the year. I shall find a way to break mine so that my wife gives me no choice but to replace it with this lol jk very quiet unit. Looks great! @RADGarage4 жыл бұрын
a9l9f9 mt Exactly. This is why I went with Mike Awada from Triton Door Service. He seems to actually care about his work versus the “techs” the original company would send out. What types of issues are you aware of so I can be on the lookout?
@a9l9f834 жыл бұрын
@@RADGarage love ya vid mate Keep good tension up to it the jack shaft motor drives the torsion system not the door itself therefore it can be more susceptible to dropping a cable. Spring balance is the key me friend.You can get cable tensioners that fit around the bottom wheel and clip on to the cable itself thus always keeping the cable tight even when tension drops. We the door is open any door the springs are on there lest amount of tension

In Canada, you would be looking around $1200 for the opener and the install. I had a few "extras" along the way but that was the original quote.

You should get an overhead door technician to fix that door. An overlayed door like that SHOULDNT sound that clunky. Your gonna blow out that motor prematurely
@RADGarage4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your concern but the technician spent hours and hours in the garage and feels the door is now perfectly balanced. The opener is not having to work overtime in any sense. This door is heavy. Like, really heavy.
@Meypsta4 жыл бұрын
@@RADGarage the noises coming off of the door are EXCESSIVE. Your door is an overlay, not full wood. Yes it is heavy, however, we deal with custom doors on a weekly basis including installation. The door needs to be balanced and reset. Looking at your spring size, the door isnt more than 350lbs dead, so it's not that heavy of a door as you think. I can assure you in a month or 2, your opener will stop opening upon startup. That's where you'll experience the most difficulty.

Frankly, this shouldn't be done without a high lift door for longevity. They throw cables of the drums allot.
@RADGarage4 жыл бұрын
What signs should I watch out for if there’s an issue with the cables?
@Theuniverseisstrange3 жыл бұрын
Man too bad you have that fur down there or you could have raised the door closer to the ceiling.

Yeah, it's not a big deal since I don't think I would ever want a lift in there or something that would require more ceiling clearance.
