I wish god games would see a resurgence... They were a uniquely fun, often-hilarious, and genuinely missed genre of gameplay. Populous, Black & White, and Dungeon Keeper were pivotal games in my formative years. Great list, as per the usual!

Yes, the dark and dry humour was always spot on and not something we get much of these days. DK is still one of my go to games for a rainy day. - Tom

This is a real blast from the past and present. I had forgotten completely about Black and White and how much i loved that game. I really wish this genre would make a comeback, it is sorely missed and needed. Brilliant vid guys.

It's strange how Black and White 2 felt more like a city builder, still fun to play though! Although I did really miss the gigantic animals.

Great list! Glad to see some love for the God sim genre I am hankering for a spritual successor to Populous, or rather to Populous 2 which I LOVED possibly even more than Populous 1 (Populous 3 took things in a different direction that I'm not so much a fan of). It seems nobody is making this game. It feels like there is so much more that could be done with genre.

With regard to the original Reus and this is from the developer directly -"Read before buying / A fair word of warning Hi y'all, I'm one of the developers of Reus. We're super thankful for all the great response Reus has gotten over the past 10 (!) years. If you're a new player, or returning after a while, here's a short explanation about the technical state of Reus. Reus is a 10-year old game, built on the discontinued XNA framework by Microsoft. With Windows constantly updating, and hardware changing, some users are experiencing technical issues with the game that didn't exist before. We've tried to tackle this problem in the past, by porting the game to 'FNA', an open sourced reimplementation of XNA. From the Steam 'Betas' tab, you may select which version works best for you. Sadly, some problems will remain in both versions that we cannot fix".

However, Reus 2 released a few months ago and is imho much better (because it displays information about biomes and synergies better and got rid of the sometimes hectic realtime aspect).

Black & White is probably one of my all time favourite games. Unfortunately it's really hard to play on windows 10/11 because it has certain files that were fine back in the day, but they are very volitile for hackers and virus' on your pc, so windows 10/11 will not let you install the game because of it. basically we need a remaster on it. At least a remaster that works enough to play on win10/11. I miss that shit so much. Black & White 2 was also very good, but it definitely wasn't the same.

Black and White was disturbing at some levels. You could slap your god creature around, or pet it so much that it would suck at combatting other god creatures. At times it felt more like a adult game. Add in that the AI was at the most basic of levels, and often i felt it would have been more fun if that god creature came with a joystick. Early game the questing could be broken, up to the point you could get stuck and have to start from scratch, add in that we didn't have the internet back then to google for solutions, let alone that google didn't exist back then, so go figure. As for Spore, that first playthrough you do is magical. That's it. Second playthrough you will be minmaxing it, and you're either nuts about the space stage, or you hate it's guts.

Spore always struck me as a class in the pseudoscience of "intelligent design" for creationists. There wasn't any real sense of natural selection or evolution.
