I really like her stuff, she tends to opt for interesting over technical, and it's rare to see it done so effectively and with such skill. Most people hating on her are expecting conventional work. Other artists do that better than her, but no one does weird quite like Annie Clark

From 1:35 to 2:10 The lack of rhythm, wrong notes, and just general nonsense, which to me doesn't sound experimental at all, it just sounds inexperienced (less than 10,000 hours of playing), lends a lack of faith the audience can have in the artist. I guess a sense of rhythm is the standard they are holding her to haha. I love how unique she is but you have to keep proper time in music to also be able to use time as a form of expression. You have to be able to express dissonance with actual notes rather than just muted and sliding nonsnse. It is very possible and sounds much better than this. I have seen other female artists do the same thing, the guitarist from jesus and the mary chain and the singer herself both come to mind. Where are all the good musicians these days? Male AND female?

@@Pyriscent have you ever thought maybe that's just her style and music doesn't have to follow arbitrary rules?
@WayanMajere
@WayanMajere 5 жыл бұрын
@@rickeyblitz2988 Music is defined by having rules for pitch, rhythm and dynamics (those rules vary a bit in different regions.) As long as you follow the given rules or any rules at all, even if you play with them and warp them, you are making music. (As described by Pyris.) But listening to her from 1:35 to 2:10 makes you feel like she simply doesn't care/know about that stuff and about those rules - which would mean she is either not experienced enough to do it properly or she isn't making music by any given (western) standard. Edit: I don't want to attack her and if you enjoy it that's fine - I enjoyed the part after 2:10 a lot - but "just her style" and "arbitrary" rules isn't really an explanation for what she is doing. If anything it comfirms what Pyris said.

I like Annie Clark. I have to admit: I'm more of a shredder guitarist, if you will. But I like the " funkiness " of her playing. It breathes and she doesn't play the same things over and over. In some phrases, she reminds me of Joe Walsh, in terms of the rhythm style combined with leads/melodies. Very cool player. It's gonna be fun to see how she develops her style over time.

The word you’re looking for is “innovative”, not “funkiness”. She’s an innovative guitarist. Nothing innovative about shredding anymore. Shredding doesn’t automatically make you a good guitarist, it makes you a guitarist who went on KZbin and learned how to play a pentatonic scale fast.

I love her. She's humble too. She doesn't let her guitar dominate or talk over most of her songs. But I love it when she lets it loose. I still have the impression that Annie is still holding back and can really rip it up if she desires to. Who has their own style? Great guitarists, that's who. She has a little Robert Fripp in her and maybe some Al Dimeola too.

LA MEJOR GUITARRISTA FEMENINA DEL MUNDO MEGAN LOVELL toca : Acustic Slide Guitars, Electric Slide Guitars, Electric Lap Steel Guitars, Electric Steel Guitars, Electric Baritone Steel Guitars, Acustic Lap Steel Resoelectric Guitars, Slide Resophonic Guitars, Pedal Steel Guitars, Dobros, Fiddles, etc, etc.

Annie can play, but unlike many male 'guitar heroes' she doesn't play it into the ground and is not using it to compensate for anything. Her guitar is just one element in a multi-faceted artistic expression, which includes a wonderful voice, some very good song writing, a stage presence that is riveting, creative use of fashion and stagecraft, and a persona that can vary from wide-eyed innocence to dominatrix severity. As if that were not enough, she is articulate, has about 50 IQ points on the typical pop or rock star, and is stunningly beautiful. I lost interest in pop/rock music a long time ago; St. Vincent has been an oasis in a desert.

The dismissiveness about her playing is unreal... I've been playing guitar for half my life and after a while I became far more interested in creativity and using the guitar in an orchestral sensibility and far less interested in pure virtuosity. Some of her playing genuinely grabs my attention but as much as whether its a riff, solo, or a rhythmic pattern, you have to pay attention to the tone and textures she draws out of the instrument. She can do it all and she can do it well, I can hear shades of Mick Ronson, Zappa, Prince, and Jeff Beck in her approach to the guitar.

I love all the comments acting as if in order to be influential or respected as a guitarist you have to be EVH. Cobain was just as legitimate as Vai and that will always be the disconnect between shredder type communities online. The intention and music as a whole is irrelevant, it's how many notes you can play.

You have to have a fair and better comparison though. Cobain would laugh his head off at being compaired to Vai. Cobain was a great songwriter, a very good singer and a fair guitarist, not a great guitarist. Jack White on the other hand is a really good guitarist while being pretty inventive and non traditional a lot of the time.

Cobain didn't care about guitar work. He was more focused on the overall progression's and melodies and introducing non-diatonic chords to create dissonance throughout the whole song.

St. Vincent is DEVO with two gorgeous women up front, and 2 faceless, androgynous guys as a rhythm section. Not TOTALLY original, but still Very Cool to see & hear these days. Annie's style is all-riff based, not traditional, and I like it a lot! She does it well. It's her thing. Drummer is great!

Guitarist here.... I believe she’s intentionally going for an interesting instead of technical. Whether she’s a good guitarist or not is objective, but I’m personally entertained.

Well thats because Orianthi writes pretty generic country tinged pop/rock and then plays a technically proficient solo in the middle. Her music begins and ends with her guitar playing, being interesting anywhere else isn't even thought of.
