I mean, all nukes could be decommissioned and public records be deleted, but I doubt we would get rid of the knowledge to make such weapon, should the need arise of having it. Probably stored as secretly as possible. With that being said, very hardly you can delete such popular thing from the internet and people's minds. So yeah, pretty unrealistic

We domesticated the silk moth 5000 years ago for sericulture. They lost their ability to fly, lack fear of predators, & have lost native color pigments since camouflage is not useful as they only live in captivity. They're entirely dependent on humans for survival, including finding a mate. When species can enslave an entire other species to the point of altering everything they were and everything they were meant to become, you don't want to mess with them.

Several HFY stories have the intelligent species evolving from either top predators or smart prey, making humans strange because we can't even take on a dog, all other things being equal (IE the human is unarmed and naked), but now we ARE an extinction event. "Predators that came from prey". Imagine a story where we are the only race that even has the concept of "pets". The aliens rage at their translators because "domesticated" is just coming out as human gibberish despite obviously not being a name. "That words, it's like... I dunno, we made friends with the animals?" "How can you make friends with a thing that can't even speak??" ... "Well yeah, if you annoy them they'll bite and scratch you..." "And yet you let them lay next to you while you sleep?? You trust a creature you can't even talk to with your life?"

@@worldcomicsreview354 well, we as mammals are still "smart prey", who developed the art of "yeeting rocks from tree" like apes, thereby becoming humans on a complicated, but relative straight movement for evolution. smart prey will realize, that killing your predators brings development etc. the actual accomplishments for a species to become space dwellers are a) not dying by climatic event influenced by unrestricted economical and population growth before leaving original planet (not fulfilled by us) b) not killing us ourself by conflict X (not fulfilled) c) getting the ability to travel over big distances of this galaxy (not even close to be fulfilled) d) finding a meaningful purpose to travell over this large distance. (easy to fill empty space. Why travel big distances to aliens, if you can develop Mars for some millenia) a lot of THESE issues are mentioned in "the forever war" by Joe Haldeman. ( i think this book hides a defeat of humanity against an alien species. it is kinda sad, that these military-fanbois, who wrote a lot of these stories lack the real intelligent knowledge about war, like in this book.)

I feel like humanity in HFY can be categorized in one of two ways: Firstly: *Planet is borderline inhospitable volcanic hellscape. Humanity: colonize spicy planet. Secondly: *Alien attacks humanity Humanity: So you have chosen- DEATH!

Honestly it's a nice refresher from all the sci-fi stories that are about humanity being the sitting ducks to some race that's a galactic horror. It's a concept of we evolved a little too well before we went out and explored.

@@BurakkuHishou It is basically a thing that cracks me up for anyone that reads ALL THE SCIENCE and not just prescribes to one type. Those who prescribe to one thing always assumes we will be the weakest thing or the most normal thing once we get to space faring proper. The problem is, on every planet that is within life support ranges...Earth really is unique as hell. Most planets have only a single uninterrupted plate, or two tectonic plates. Three is the highest count for the vast majority of life range planets. Earth has 15 tectonic plates! Our moon is far larger than a planet of our size should have as well. This causes our planet to have vastly different and changing weather conditions, as well as very extreme weather conditions. People point to Venus and it's acid rain. Yeah...but if you solve the acid problem all you are dealing with is a planet with Seattle's rain. It doesn't have super extreme weather conditions. Mars has a constant 100 mph wind...but the air is so thin it feels like maybe 5-10 mph to us. Unlike that movie, the harshest of wind storms on Mars wouldn't even make a human fight against it. If we terraform mars those winds would slow due to an increase in the density of the atmosphere as well. This is true for every exoplanet we have studied in depth. The planets are very 'tame' compared to Earth. They have one big thing to overcome and other than that are rather unthreatening. Also...all of them have weaker gravity! One of the reasons for Earth's gravity isn't just it's size, it is due to the iron core being so damn big. All the life on Earth is legit tough and robust. Dealing with everything Earth can throw at us does make us unique in this galaxy. The individuals that expect us to be the average or weak when we get space faring point at things like gas giants for the extremes of what is out there. Things don't live on gas giants...bacterial life we have found (and we HAVE found it) always appears on planets within the goldilocks zone. Most are typically Mars sized as well, which is legit half the size of Earth.

@@WE_DONT_LIE It means the author has no grasp of physics. The nuclear bomb is a direct consequence of learning to manipulate atomic forces. The "if you get too much of this stuff excited all at once you blow up a city" thing needs to be understood, whether it is an intentional design goal or not.

What would make more sense to me is that the use of nukes would be illegal, but the humans wouldn't have known and used them anyway. Bombs aren't very subtle and they're very destructive. It's like using a shotgun in a hostage situation. Why destroy what you can use later? A military base, might need to be destroyed, sure, but what about the city next to it? The city has readily available labourers as well as an economy and most likely surrounding agricultural facilities that can all be captured and exploited. But not if you level everything within 100 miles of the base. Using a nuclear reactor to power an energy weapon for a more precise strike the only cripples the military capabilities of your enemy would be much better and it would avoid harming noncombatants, whether or not you intend to press them into an involuntary labour force afterward.

The big thing that stands out to me as being a bit of a stretch is the erasure of even the concepts of a nuke. If scientists during WW2 could and were working it out then, I find it hard to believe that centuries of advancement and jumps in power production could ever eliminate it as a concept not just from human understanding but that xeno sciences wouldn't know about it ether.

I agree, but only to a point. Harnessing the power of an atom, yes. As a bomb? ...why? It would make more sense, unless you had a specific application for munitions that could kill entire planets and destroy cities, to use an energy beam. Surgical strikes on strategic targets to merely cripple the martial functions of an opposing force would be much more economically wise, but a large bomb would destroy everything, including any useful resources that were nearby. So, if you instead have a reactor and some sort of energy weapon, you could melt bases and/or weapons to slag and in general glass anything you didn't need, but keep civilian populations out of harms way and preserve economic and agricultural functions for later exploitation.

you cannot erase Nuclear Bomb mechanisms without losing on Nuclear Fission/Fusion reactors because they use the same chamisal reactions, meaning that humanity just lied about "decommissioning" that technology because it was such a scary tech. sadly, that's not even the scariest weapons we have... funnel mass from a star into an ion beam to fry biological, electronical and mechanical devices alike with no regard to armor or shield technology is still a viable option if you have a space-bound factory that can construct stuff in space(somewhat required for an operational fleet of starships). push a moon into a gravity sling to be launched back at mach 100 or some other dumb speed. make a bunch of mirrors around the sun to concentrate light with a "fuck that one thing in particular" though it's closer to a K2 tech(for long range planetary glassing and near light-speed transportation) a system wide version should be possible with current day technology given a space-bound factory and if you think for a second that we wouldn't just weaponize FTL you are hilariously wrong. FTL nukes are pretty much the first dumbest idea that doesn't even require knowing how FTL itself can be weaponized. just saying, don't be afraid of the nukes, humanity will make things that make nukes look puny in comparicon. and remember that a slug of metal at 0.1c has vastly more destructive energy when compared to an atomic bomb of the same mass, than realize we know that and are currently trying to figure out what happen when you hit someone with a nuke at 0.1c.

The USA has experienced only 16 years of peace in it's history, that peace was not all at the same time either. Of known conflicts, the past 3000 years have known only 200 years of peace. This is assumed as we don't know of EVERY conflict! Humans are war-like in the extreme.

You could make the argument that several races had different ways of discovering energy generation depending on the resources of their home planet and the traits of their species. If a alien species perceives reality through telepathy rather than the refraction of light to your optical nerves, you will see the world in a different manner and be able to identify different uses for things. Some might have skipped nuclear technology because they found a more efficient method for their respective environments. Other cases could be that the Galactic community gave them technology such as singularity or anti-matter reactors, etc. It’s still strange that no other race in the galaxy discovers the energy and use it as a weapon, but still you can work around the origin stories of each alien to make that sense.

What people tend to forget is that while it isn't glamorous, each side having an 'I'm taking you out with me' button actually works very well in reducing the scale of conflict, though conflict will still continue. Can't really erase the know-how to create a nuke unless you eliminate all the nuclear reactors too. I also don't see how the galactic community could have FTL and not have studied the method by which every star in the universe creates energy.
