As a former soldier with multiple deployments burned into my memory, I've seen firsthand the inhumanity we are capable of. Not even the Gods of the heavens or the demons of the hells would be able to withstand the nightmare fuel of the mind of a soldier pushed to the limit.

@@vekstonebeard Thank you for a great story. It left me thinking of wonderous possibilities and what I'd choose. That is the hallmark of proper storytelling through the ages: planting a seed. I have been reading Sci-fi novels since the 1980s, and only recently started listening to stories on KZbin. TBH I didn't think I'd like audio books or short stories, as I love the feel of a book in my hands. Don't stop writing.

The captain's punishment is nearly identical to that of ASHWATTHAMA from the epic of Mahabharata. For all his crimes including the murder of an unborn child The lord Krishna cursed him with eternal life for he is to wander the earth experiencing all the diseases pain & suffering of mankind , for his body to rot eternally but never granting him the peace of death. He's one of the 7eternals in Hinduism. Cartaphilus or The wandering jew is another similarly cursed character from the Bible. Cursed for taunting and casting the first stone against the Jesus of Nazareth on his way to the crucifixion. He's to wander the earth and suffer till the Second coming. That is interesting. While I would love to take credit for making the reference. But sadly I cannot. Because when I wrote the story, I did not specifically think about those stories. However, I have read a plethora of folktales, religious texts, and legends. So some part of my brain must have thought about Cartaphilus and Aswatthama while writing that section.

Even I am scared of my own mind. Our minds are sealed by reality and our souls bound by chains we make. We bind ourselves in chains for we know what can happen if we don't. These chains give us comfort, happiness, love, sorrow, anger, and pain. These chains we make for our selves are what give us reasons to live. They thought to break all our chains to bind us but tried to use the seal on us to do so. Their machines broke our seal and we will not allow them to break our chains. Reality will shatter before we allow another race to break all of the chains of humanity.

The alien technology. It's limited to a special kind of their species that can alter reality with their thoughts. Most of their species do not have this power. They assume that the story tellers of a species are the ones with this gift, not realizing that every human is capable of telling a story.
