What if it was your family there? Would you still have that opinion. Those good fine people deemed nonessential chose to die for the women, children, and families of those from the planet. They had a choice, the families didn't. So they chose to provide those families the opportunity for that choice. They died doing what they signed up for as part of a military. I think the captain would have objections to some as some would think themselves replaceable or nonessential when they aren't. (Humans are funny that way.) Yet, the majority I don't think he'd fight. For their sacrifice makes sense.

sometimes things are outside your hands, and those 5000 all came forward willingly to make more space, knowing that they won't survive their actions, it takes true courage to knowingly lay down your life in the service of others, the captain was a hero for risking his ship, but the real heroes are those who willingly stepped unto the planet to save more lives knowing that they'll be trading theirs for it

@@wrathshorts2894 but…. I mean…The “consequences” of living for someone also last for eternity. You said something along the lines of “but if you choose to live for someone that’s a one time decision. What if you change your mind later?” My counter to that would be well. yeah. buuut….. what if you don’t? What if you do stick with it? And maybe your living for more than one person at a time and if so how many lives can you save and change while you yet live? Not saying dying for someone isn’t an act of nobility of the highest degree but living for other peoples sake with that same degree of intensity is more noble because not only does it (usually) end up positively effecting more peoples lives overall and that effect usually carrying on through them to possibly even more people but it is also much more difficult to actually consistently do in the long run. Oh! And not calling Jesus wrong or anything I just wanted to defend the stance that living for someone can be a better thing to do than dying for them (at least most of the time).

No really a fan of 1:1 trade ratios. Rather silly to risk the lives of everyone- including the rest of the crew and all those gathered on the other 51 evacuations- just to trade 5,000 crew for 5,000 random people. And the "not essential" designation doesn't make sense- they were essential enough for a paycheck before, and now the ship is packed to the brim with passengers so surely every single crew member is "essential."

Consider though that it was 5000 of a species that was about to be made effectively extinct, 5000 additions to the gene pool that will allow that species to keep existing compared to 5000 crew from species that number in the billions. Doesn't sound like much, a drop in the ocean, but when your dealing with the potential extinction of a spcies, every drop helps.

Non essential in the size of this ship can easily mean not important for the rescue effort. It was very important for the ship in general to have its own media section with hundreds of position to keep the morale for years or months, but for the next few days, they are not needed, but the saved soon to be extinct race member may be more valuable. in a sensible way, the entire act was stupid, that risked in important military asset for an irrelevant planets irrelevant population, yet it did what it did for some other non-sensible ideas.
@cgi2002
@cgi2002 2 жыл бұрын
@@thorin1045 it's one of those missions that serves no tactical purpose, but does actually serve a strategic purpose. This was a morale victory, imagine the negative effect just standing by and letting it happen while doing nothing when you could help would have on humanities morale. But doing it, saving all those lives, it gives hope, and that unites people. I wouldn't be surprised if within a year or 2 humanity began building a fleet of newer far larger ships, 5000 of them to be precise, and named them for the 5000 who stayed with the promise of never again will we be forced to leave the innocent in harm's way. We are that kind of species, if something is impossible, we just change the rules until it is.
@chetw3139
@chetw3139 2 жыл бұрын
First off it's a military vessel. They signed up to save, protect, and defend. Defend the people. Their families. Their homes. Their country. Their way of life. They signed up to risk it all, to lay their lives down on the line if need be, for that cause. The planet they went to was a part of their nation group. It's civilians were Earth's civilians as much as earth was that planet's civilians. (Think of the US with it's states. They were effectively just another state in the same government.) That means the planet's civilians too fall under the terms the military personnel signed up for. In this case they traded Men and Women for civilians and CHILDREN. They were trading their lives so the innocent could have a future. There are PLENTY of similar situations in the past. Where people willingly died for the future. As for "not essential." Essential depends on what the mission goal is to some extent. Yes you need gunners to defend the ship from patrols here, but it's not like you're going to face a pirate fleet here. You're going somewhere to drop those folks off. So you can afford to lose a few gunners. Do you need your crew who is for boarding defense and moving supplies? Probably not all of them. Essential here is effectively a skeleton crew, maintenance, and doctors. Do you need your back up navigator? Your weapons crews? Your ground pounders? The backup chefs? What about the back up kitchen staff? Every maintenance guy? No, not for this mission. Better to protect the future. Those who didn't choose to make the sacrifice. Those who weren't prepared to die today. Better to die to protect and preserve the future. That species. Those kids. Those families.
