given enough time.. you could probably damage something with a scratch even if it had the toughest armor or skin or whatever.. given even more time and that scratch becomes a wound... more time still and that wound can become fatal. once one is beaten then you move on to the next. that's what i got from what the humans did in the story.

You would have to be able to scratch something in the first place. Butter would have a damn hard time scratching a frying pan, after all. By the time it worked, you would probably be less scratching the pan and instead be blasting a hole in it like with a water jet cutter.

If this ties into our universe, my guess is some tiny bit of us remained on earth, our history wiped and reformed into what we have now- we dont know what we are actually, and no ones come to our star system because of either fear or something else. If there is life in the universe beyond us- they can hear us, theyre just leaving us be, either out of fear or respect- they just dont want to pick up the phone. Cant blame them
