So, I correctly called the humans would send a warship, just not the reasoning why. Was expecting it was because humanity was in the middle of a civil war. Though, that whole bit about being careful about stuff that shows up unexpectedly makes me thing that in this verse, this isn't humanity's first rodeo at "first contact".

I think you're missing context from another part of the monologue, Eradin had _theorized_ that the planet was inhabited, but they weren't really sure. This was both an exploratory mission to see if sapients were living there, as well as a First-Contact mission if there were. Since it wasn't a guarantee, and odds were likely low (deathworld tropes), the higher-ups were unlikely to "waste" much funding on such a long-shot and likely wild-goose chase.

@@DraconicDuelist You're right,that makes a lot more sense,it's just the wording in the story confused me. HOWEVER.Shouldn't any group of spacecraft be self-sustainable? Use hydroponics for food & air,mine asteroids fot raw materials.You don't NEED a BUDGET at all if everywhere around you is just filled with infinite resources.

Using L.H/LOX rockets to propel space to space nuclear missiles seems inefficient. You would get greater delta-v for the same mass using NERVA rocket to propel the misiles and there are better designs for Atomic Rockets.
@thomasschulz2167
@thomasschulz2167 Жыл бұрын
I get where your coming from however, I'm pretty sure the idea behind using H2/O2 rockets instead of NERVA is you want to keep the radiation as far away from your ship as possible when it detonates. With a NERVA rocket you have the issue of a potentially highly radioactive exhaust in and around your ship where it may be too much for the radiation shielding to handle it. An H2/O2 1st stage to get your weapon a couple thousand km away before lighting off the NERVA would probably be a better idea.
@kiritotheabridgedgod4178
@kiritotheabridgedgod4178 8 ай бұрын
Depends on if they are missiles or torpedoes. If they are missiles, I agree with the guy above. If they are torpedoes, then the initial acceleration of the chemical rocket would be greater and would cut out sooner. In a battle, it's a lot harder to see a nuclear armament that's moving towards you on momentum alone, amongst the constant flow of Railgun and plasma fire, than it is to see said nuclear armament, if it's continuing to burn towards you until impact.
@calvingreene90
@calvingreene90 8 ай бұрын
@@thomasschulz2167 While there are Atomic rocket engines that throw a lot of radioactive material out the back (the salt water rocket) the designs that store the fuel separate from the reaction mass don't suffer from that defect. The Saltwater rocket is also inefficient in its use of fissionable. You could also launch the missiles out perpendicular to the direction of the target so that after the missile has rotated to aim at the Target the exhaust plume misses the launching ship.
