Speer has always been optimistic with their advertised velocities. That .223 load was probably a 24 inch barrel, and even then, I wouldn't be surprised if it fell quite a bit short. They make excellent projectiles, but their ammunition is garbage. I miss seeing Gold Dots loaded by Double Tap and Underwood. When I was first getting into 10mm, Double Tap was just getting started. Their 180 gr Gold Dot load was my go-to for years, and it actually chronoed very close to 1300 fps.
@rangetime67792 ай бұрын
Very interesting test. The 10mm kicked butt. The short barreled 223 just can't deliver the velocity necessary. If they made short barrel 223 with faster burning powders maybe it'd give the 10mm a run for the money. Considering the size of the firearms.... 10mm all the way.
@jmichaelcarbonniere95492 ай бұрын
Great test, AZ! Timely, as well, since I have a Ruger LC 10mm on order. It has a 16" barrel so I don't know what my velocities will be with the 165 Gold Dot but out of my Glock 40 they are moving out at 1450! These are handloaded as I was finally, after more than 2 years, able to find some for sale. By coincidence, my current home defense ammo for my AR is the Speer 55 gr Gold Dot, also handloaded. I don't remember the velocity off hand out of my 16" barrel but it's loaded to the max according to the Speer manual. If it turns out that the LC shoots as well as I hope it will likely become my main home defense gun. I will probably use the Underwood loading of the Lehigh Extreme Defenders but I have a limited supply of them so my backup ammo will be the Gold Dots, of which I have nearly equal confidence in! I will post the velocity data as soon as I get it! Cheers, jc

Michael, I watch Mr. T closely! His series on the 10mm LC is what prompted me to order one for myself. That and I get a pretty good discount from a friend that works for Ruger! Since I'm usually broke, I sold some stuff so I'm getting the LC and an SFAR. I've been wanting a AR10 for quite a while, like since I sold my HK91 several years ago. I let the HK go because my back was a complete mess and it was heavy. My back has since been fixed but this SFAR has gotten my interest for a while. All the reviews I've read on both guns have been positive so I bit the bullet and ordered both. Between those and a new puppy, I'm pretty busy for an old guy! Cheers, jc

I figure my Keltec sub2K might come pretty close to this level of performance. Winchester Ranger 180’s clock right at 1190-1225 fps for nearing 600 fpe. The keltec adds about 200 fps on to what I get out of my Sig 226. I’ve played with +P pressure 160 grn handloads and making 800 fpe isn’t much of a challenge with a 16” barrel. @@patbrown463 No. The way I described is the way that was inteded when the gun was constructed. Soviet / russian troops are taught this way until today. @@patbrown463 Wrong in one major point: the gun was deliberately constructed to be charged the way I described. Because soviet leadership didn't hold their soldiers in high esteem concerning intelligence. That is why things should be as easy and unmisunderstanble as possible.
