Hi Ben, I'm from South Africa and have found a Zephyrus G15 Ryzen 9 5900HS here that's in my (limited) budget. I'm a video and motion graphics editor and this version has the RTX 3050 which I'm concerned will be an issue with AE and 4K video. But this laptop ticks every other box for me with color accuracy, battery life, the Ryzen 9 CPU... I'm just not sure about the RTX 3050. Though I have read that the Nvidia Studio Driver does make a difference? Do you think this GPU would be ok?

I ordered the Eclipse Gray version with the 5900HS, 3830 RTX & 16gb ram straight from Asus last week, along with an additional 1TB M.2 drive and a 32gb So-DIMM from Amazon to beef it up a bit. I ordered this to specifically replace my main pentesting laptop running Kali Linux (was an older Asus laptop, but the battery was dying). This laptop runs like an absolute dream in Linux. The only issue I had was trying to install with the 2022.3 iso from Kali, as that would hang during network device detection. Switching to the 2022.2 iso, and installation went smoothly. The benchmarks for Hashcat are stunning. This outperforms my work station for cracking hashes, and it's a beautiful, elegant laptop. KDE looks gorgeous on it with 'energized' windows effects (imagine windows being beamed in and out Star Trek style when opened or closed). I disagree with your take on the Ethernet port. I love having a proper Ethernet port, especially without the cheap plastic hinge that normally is added on laptops. The mini-SD slot is great for putting encrypted customer reports for engagements overseas, as you can just mail the drive back home and not worry about carrying it through customs and having them possibly try to violate your NDA with the client. Gaming performance in Linux is outstanding. Elden Ring runs better on this than it does on Windows with similar specs. I went with the G15 as I had bought a G14 last Summer (for Windows 11) and just loved the device. Build quality, aesthetics, performance are all lovely. This G15 is pretty much my dream laptop as it runs Linux flawlessly and has perfect performance for all of my needs.

I got a laptop for the same price of the Zephyrus G15 *RTX 3080* . The one i got has 32gb ram , the amd ryzen 5900HX , rtx 3070 , 2 ssd ( one of 500gb another of 1tb ) and a 17.3 inch matte screen 100% srgb . It's a customed laptop made by pcspecialist , the price is lower than any brand you can find out there and the performances are awesome for video editing or gaming .

The RTX 3080 in this laptop will be highly advantageous for 8k. However, the legion 5 Pro mentioned by Ben Munro is great because it has a more powerful CPU. So both would be good choices.

You can always buy a separate one online (bluetooth) which will probably have better resolution than most built in laptop webcams. Even if you have daily video meeting it doesn't sound inconvenient. After using g15 moonlight white for a couple of months, only criticism is the lack of nit brightness.

I love the white chassis on some of the laptops that came out this year, Zephyrus G15, Legion 5 Pro, HP Omen/Victus(Couldn't find this one in the US in white). I ultimately bought the Legion 5 Pro over the Zephyrus G15 for two reasons; 1: I don’t like the soldered on ram 2: I don’t like the screen hinge forcing the fan exhaust up into the screen and typing area. Having the screen hinge like that also blocks moving the larger ports to the back like the HDMI, network, and power. The lighter weight compared to the Legion 5 Pro was a big plus, but the two previous issues are more important to me. P.S. The MSI Creator Z16 was highlighted instead of this Zephyrus G15 on the After Effects slides.

I run them on balanced mode (plus any extra battery savings features available), 35% - 50% brightness, plus windows power savings mode. Hope this helps.

I hear the WiFi card is garbage. But that’s only a $30 fix. Some say the screen is not bright enough, my current laptop is only 250nits so this will be an improvement. No webcam is annoying but definitely not a deal breaker. My only concern would be the thermals. I guess you can undervolt the gpu, but I’m not sure if that cpu can be undervolted 🤷🏻

Your battery test is superb here on all levels. Made the purchase but i find mine not doing well as yours. What can you say on it? It's running on IGPU mode, half brightness, only browser and some productivity apps like mentioned.

It will certainly come a lot closer! I had an m16 and switched it for the g15 mostly because of the charger. But my one friend rocking a macbook air didn’t even know they made laptops this heavy anymore lol. The charger and laptop fit in my bag and don’t take much more space than an ultrabook.

I want this laptop, but then I realise what I actually want is the M16. But then I still want the G15. They're both so amazing & I'd love the G15 tbh, but I mostly game on PS5 anyway so I'd never actually max out the capabilities of the G15, so for me it makes more sense to get the M16... @@akabalance7791 I'm not worried about it tbh, the heat thing because thats been somewhat dispelled as a non issue However, I'm not buying the M16 yet... Intels 12th gen chips have made me wait because I honestly think the difference from the 11th gen all performance 8 cores, switching to 12th gen with 8 cores performance & 4 or 6 cores for efficiency will be a big game changer for laptops such as the M16. Probably vastly improved battery life & daily to day usage with the performance for reasonable gaming if I need it? I'm hoping Asus refreshes the M16 basically just with whatever the 12th gen version is with the new core design.

I’ve used both quite a bit and they’re just different. The m16 is cooler but a lot louder and, if you’re doing CPU bound stuff like sound mixing, it's noticeably smoother. Also the m16 has much better audio drivers, especially for headset mics, I always sound a bit too quiet on the g15. That said I love having a decent beast laptop when I’m plugged in and a decent ultraportable when I’m traveling

If you're looking for the 3080 model, and you're in the states, I think you're SOL atm, that being said, after watching videos of the 3080, 32gb ram, and the 3070, 16gb ram models, the benchmarks that they did were pretty similar with the 3070 model edging out the 3080 model in some games with 1-2 more fps, and vice versa. Guessing it's due to the power, and thermal throttling on the 3080 model. Ended up ordering the 3070 off BestBuy an hour ago due to that.

The only variant in India is RTX 3060 , 5900 HS, 16 GB RAM, everything else the same. I really really the G15 , for everything , I don't mind the 3060 , it should be fine for most games anyway . MY ONLY CONCERN, as I work in Music Production (also looking forward to get into Unreal Engine), and In Music Programming by the time I reach Final Mixing and rendering stage, the project is quite heavy , especially utilizes a lot of RAM....... THE QUESTION > For now 16 GB will do , but as I know 16 GB wont be future proof for sure. So what happens if in future I replace one 8gb stick with 16 or 32 ? I know dual channel is ideal and the way to go , so what happens when it is lets say 8 GB RAM in one sloth and 16 GB in another ? Is it very bad ? Will it bring the performance down even though the total RAM count increases ? I really need to know this , please do provide some information on this. No one is covering this @Ben G Kaiser.

Joshua Vergara covered it on his channel. If you get more RAM the first 16 will still run in dual channel then any left over will just run in one channel. If I remember right 40 GB hurt some games so his sweet spot was 24.

I've seen an absurd amount of reports saying the wifi card on these is essentially dead on arrival, can't hold a stable connection and has to be replaced by the user or returned. Its whats been putting me off. Also screen brightness is terrible

They're similar. g14 = Better form factor but over heats comparitively easily. g15 = Bigger so cooling is better. I doubt there's any other major difference 🤔.

Just be careful when buying this laptop with 3060 and 3070. It have a ton of QC, I used to got one with bent screen on 1 side, creaking sound on the bezel(may because of the glue) and the chassis. Returned it and buy the Strix advantage edition.

No Webcam is a dealbreaker. It’s 2021, whether school or work everyone is remote at least part time. Shouldn’t need to buy an external one. $300 chrome books still come with a webcam.
