Thank you, I also am considering upgrading and the M1 looks very tempting. My concern and question would be; how long will the M1 be supported? I would upgrade from a Macbookpro early 2013 and edit Photo, surf, prepare talks & on a random basis edit videos. My hope was that this buy will last a while, but with the M1 I am concerned that this may be only supported for a few years before software slows it down.

Can I get some advice on which MacBook to get. My MacBook Pro is from 2012 a 13” 2.5GHz Intel Core i5. My uses would be to watch videos and movies, investing, and maybe gaming (optional). After some wear and tear my MacBook is about to go any day now. Time for an upgrade. Edit: Would an M1 or M2 better suit my needs?

Depends on budget. I’d get as new of a laptop as your budget allows. The M1 would be a massive update for you though.

M1 Max had a GPU performance scaling issue which was addressed in M2 Max. In other words, each additional GPU core in the M1 Max offered less and less incremental performance gains, i.e, GPU performance vs. # GPU Cores was not nearly linear.

I can only concur w.ith your thoughts. The M1 Pro am Max series of computers did solve the wishes we could have as video editors who do not work on extremely extensive projects with layers and layers of effect where the GPU are tasked substantially the speed difference between the Pro model as well as the Max model are not worth the upgrade cost. Only people into heavy 3D work or maybe After Effect may get speed increase that makes the upgrade worth it. I as a prosumer using it for short educational videos for my privat KZbin will not benefit from an upgrade to an 16 inch M1 Pro to a M3

got a question. I'm i'm the market going in for my first m laptop. i'm looking at m1 64gb 4tb vs m3 48 2tb. (Actually, any advise from anyone would be great) Worth going for the m3 or go for the m1? (heavy editing, coloring, and heavy transferring of files). I would love to get opinions about future proof with the M3? As I want this computer to last me a long time and that's what's drawing me the most to it.

that's really gonna depend, the m1 and the m3 have the same hard ware video encoders and decoders so when it comes to render times for video (depending on you're exporting codec) you probably may not see much gains there. Where you're more likely to see a difference is on the time line, and that will come down to a few things , what editing software you are using, the codec of video your editing and if you're using a GPU intensive plugin. With enough layers and fxs you can get dropped frames on both machines but but the m1 will blink first , but to me the difference is not substantial enough to warrant the price gap when in comes to video editing in my opinion. So just spend your money were it counts.

I absolutely 100% believe the M1 Pro is still rock solid. The problem that I had is that I don’t upgrade laptops often and wanted something that I can have for 6-7 years. As much as I loved the M1 Pro, I didn’t want to start with something right off the bat that’s already about 3 years old. So I ordered the M3 Pro MBP. Again, 100% M1 believer.

I am glad I am not alone in this! Like you I do not replace my computers all that often either. I want to get something as new as possible that'll last me years before I need to replace it. I will have enough money saved up to buy the machine with my needed specs in the first couple of days of June 2024. I wouldn't want a machine that is a year & a half or 3 years old at that point. But getting an 8 month old machine certified refurbished? Yeah I can live with that for a good while.

Agreed! I’m still rocking an M1 MacBook Pro 13 inch as well as a M2 MacBook Pro 16 inch. They are both great. But if I were going to buy one today it would be the M3 for video, etc. But for most people the M1, especially the M1 Max will still handle/be overkill for their needs. Great video!

Well said,, I've done the same,, bought the m1max 64gb memory 4tb ssd for £2400 brand new unpacked in the uk,,,still under warranty,,,I do mostly Photoshop and illustrator, so doesn't need the most amount of performance,, actually for me the amount of memory is more important,,,, I'm really happy with it,,, I'm an android guy regarding phones, pc guy regarding gaming, but regarding laptops, MacBook pro 16 all day everyday,,,

Would an M3 max age better then an M2 max... and better again than an M1 max. Q. Are we seeing chip evolution plateau, is Moore's Law slowing down based on the current tech limitations 🤔 As you have said regards the next processor revolution I think when (not if) graphine based chips come to be we will see the next hyper jump in processing ability as Silicon was from Intel.

Thanks for this, it's nice to get an honest summary. I'm not very tech savvy, and I have been using non apple products my entire life. I've gotten into mixing music, so I am planning on making the switch to Mac, but I'm also just an apprentice tradesman with not a bunch of money to waste. Planned obsolescence. Apple products go vintage after 5 years and obsolete after 7 years from the date of introduction. M1 got Big Sur, Ventura and Sonoma, so I expect 2 more OS releases before M1 is left behind.

And, the only problem that I see buying a M1 (used) is the warranty. Cuz apple componentsbeen soldered on logical board, once it brokes and your are not inside warranty anymore, you get a piece of metal on your desk, nothing else. Here in Brasil, its even worse with 100% tax importation and dolar 5x1. You need to work a full year to buy a macbook pro Max here will cost about 30k

Ok...here is my question...I am currently using a MacBook Pro from 2015.. 2.5 GHz Quad Corei7 w/ 16GB DDR3 Ram and a 512 HD. I use my macbook for work and run dual monitors. I like to usually buy a maxed out one that will last me 8 plus years. I don't do graphic design...I am a commodity trader and mainly I am using Safari , photos and documents.....I know, its overkill but if you do the math, having this unit almost 10 years and it still rocks...To me, thats worth it. However, its getting close to being full on the 512 HD so it's time. What the HELL do I buy??? I found a seriously maxed out unit via your link for an M1 Max Chip, 64 GB Ram and 2TB HD...Seems awesome and at $2,499....Seems great. However, Its a M1 and its from 2021. Like the comments below, I am afraid to start 2 generations behind and then will have to upgrade sooner. Any help from my fellow Mac users would be greatly appreciated.... Thank you

I think you’re not paying attention. The M3max beats the m1max by a lot, but it is not a leap like from the intel chips, but it is a very significant leap. For the needs of most, the m1max is a good buy, but it will still obsolete faster than an m3max. I think you are under playing m3 and overplaying the value of m1max. Those who have an m1max now should not upgrade, I agree, but if buying new, I would upgrade unless I’m currently cash poor. An m3max will last you much longer than a m1max. But I’d still would not upgrade an m1max now, I’d wait for an m4 or m5, at the pace Apple is driving. Don’t buy obsolete tech, but keep obsolete tech until you can get a big jump in performance, especially if you buy at the high end.

you're right when it comes so some aspects but in others the gaps isn't as wide. If you are someone who uses things like blender the gains in performance are clearly there. On the other hand if you're doing things like video editing the jump in performance isn't as clear cut. Idno if I would consider the M1 as an obsolete technology, based of the way apple supports their phone chips. The things that will make the biggest difference in future iterations will always be new hardware and no amount of customization now will hide hardware gaps that will come in the future.

You’re, the m1 is not obsolete as I’m keeping my M1 Ultra for at least three more years. I need to get as many years from it as possible. But my m1pro laptop with 16GB ram was just not cutting it, so I traded it for an m3max with 32 GB and it does much much better. I plan to hang onto it for as long as possible.
