Just going to say this to those criticizing Tsuchiya's skills..he's been driving with actual track experience longer than anyone else, especially before any of you were born including myself. I'm only saying this because I don't want to hear some BS person trying to make some technical discussion w/o knowing the backstory of the car or experience or because of a simulator or some reference from Initial D. Whatever it is, I just want everyone to enjoy the video. As far as the car setup goes, this was the car's first debut in 1998 and did not have the modifications it would receive later in its times for refinement (i.e. 14" tires to 15"s tires, engine tweaked for 8,500-9,000RPM instead of 9,500 shift point, TRD rear shocks replaced with PCR shocks, equal length 4-links mod, GT-Wing, etc.) so considering this was the car's shakedown, it's not a bad result for 3rd place but again it wasn't refined. If you watch the AE86 Club volumes, you'll see the progress it went through from 1998 to 2001/2002. That's just my 2 cents, I'm not here to put down anyone with their opinions but it's annoying to see someone just post some blatant comment without knowing the reasoning and acting as if they've driven longer than the guy himself. Let's just all enjoy the driving and sound!

Thank you for putting that out, getting kinda miffed some people here would coach Keiichi about having bad lines etc. I mean, this is a race/drift champion we're talking about! If it's anything it's the car that's holding him back in the corners.

@@fadedsideways Yeah, it's so easy to be an armchair critic of his driving but the reality is people don't experience the high intensity adrenaline Keichii endures and only judge in hindsight of what could be better. Some probably think that just because they're good at sims and have perfect lines that they feel they can coach someone who has actual track experience. The reality is, unless you feel the real danger and physical stress of driving at that level consistently you're pretty much just judging his driving on a superficial level.

I can't think of a single racing series that uses automatic cars.

Tsuchiya's Trueno has more power then the front AE86 but losing traction at the corner, you can notice he has to battle with the oversteer when exiting corner, the front AE86 has more rear end grip then Tsuchiya's, that's why he did not manage to overtake him at the last high speed corner. 2nd points is that, Tsuchiya been racing for so many years in GT cars, long hour endurance races, including 24 hours of Lemans. This little AE86 race is not even putting any stress on him, he was probably enjoying doing this aggressive move and did it in purpose, don't forget this is part of Best motoring documentary, it needs some exciting scene for audience.

Yes, I think his car had overall good advantage but at this time it wasn't refined as expected, this N2 Levin would later receive upgrades shown in AE86 Club volumes, for instance, Sakurai opt'd to inch up the car from 14"s to 15"s tires, replacing the rear dampers from TRD to PCR and I believe the 'major' upgrade was the equal 4-links. Sakurai also limited the engine from 9,500RPM shift point to 8,500-9,000RPM as using RPM power didn't do much in their favor. And then much later they'd do the GT Wing in 2007 and use a non-FA spec 4A-G from KMS as the FA spec 4A-G had blown at the time and they needed a spare engine ASAP. This car is actually now owned by Koshimizu of KMS!

@Oppai Man Exactly! Basically, if the car had more rear stability, he would be doing well overall especially the last corner. I notice that in later years that he would take the final corner in 4th gear instead of 3rd, I believe he did that to pull through with torque instead of using RPMs.

@@emrekanli its not faster, he is just slip streaming behind the car. He tried to overcome him 3 times doing the same thing but couldnt do it, because the cars are very similar in power..

me: watching this on my 5.7" phone screen me also: sitting on a chair, beside a table also me: suddenly moving my feet just like he doing, just had feelings how frustrated the legend ws in the cockpit gettin his naughty white opponent. this is why i love to watch these type of legendary videos instead of trying a real rigged simulator, with toe work POV and cockpit 360°ish view (driving simulator using triple monitors).

Woooo smooth racing! I bet if he was to follow the white car into turn 1 instead of cutting into the inside he would have carried more speed into the next lap and would have enough momentum for a pass on next straight away.

That would be the ideal cornering pattern, yes. It isn't much useful when attacking your opponent however, unless your opponent is an actual slowpoke skill-wise.

(3:36) watch his foot let off the throttle, maybe if kept accelerating, he would've passed him on that next straight. A little contact might have been necessary to get the other driver to give up more of the inside lane. Not sure, but this was Gold!

DK's rear was flying all over and took a lot to correct while the car infront looked stable. A longer race maybe 3 laps more DK would overtake but more than that, his tyres would degrade much more than the guy infront and will not be able to attack.
