I've been blessed with freakishly strong nails. Not sure why. I don't take supplements, rarely use nail polish, keep them super short and have hypothyroidism. Lol! They've been this way my whole life. I've never used fake nails which I understand can weaken them. And I don't push back my cuticles or trim them so maybe that has helped over the years. Happy Tuesday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a lovely evening. 💙

I have very soft flat nails that I can just tear off. I don't do any wet work etc that would cause soft nails. They only become a bit stronger and more rounded if I take a multivitamin supplement. So my experience with having brittle nail syndrome is different. My index and middle finger nails grow the slowest and break easily, while my ring and pinky fingers grow claws. Lol I'm going to try the vaseline/glove strategy, so thanks for the tip!
@violetviolet8888 ай бұрын
@ajfuller83 watch "The Salon Life". 5:49 Dr Dray should have added the application of 'cuticle" oil which is really the "proximal nail fold" *before* applying petrolatum. The cuticle is the adhesive between our skin (proximal nail fold) and the top of our nail bed that protects our fingers against bacterial infection. Jojoba oil is the best most penetrative. Apply jojoba oil after every hand washing and before you go to bed around your nails, then apply petrolatum which is the occlusive to seal in the oil. I use 1-2 drops of jojoba oil on one nail and rub nails and surrounding skin on both hands against each other to spread and apply it so there is never oil on the front of my hands/fingers and I can go about my day. A little goes a long way. It would take three full days of soaking in jojoba oil for it to completely soak into the nail bed so this is why daiy use over time is required to be effective, it would likely take a full month of frequent, daily use to really start to demonstrate a difference. Once achieved, the rest is daily/nightly maintenance. Bliss Kiss makes excellent nail oil products and they work with nail anatomy scientist Doug Schoon who explains the distinction between the proximal nail fold and the cuticle. Their website is also informative in addition to The Salon Life. Also check out the comments to the videos from TSL.

Omgoodness. That correlation between active fingers and faster nail growth is so true! It probably explained why my nails grew so much when I used to type a lot. It drove me crazy! I was always cutting them cause I found they got in my way since my nails grew straight out as opposed to curving upwards. Fascinating!

That was very interesting, now I finally know why my nails on my left hand grew extremly slow compared to the right hand after I had surgery on my left elbow. They accidentally damaged the radial nerve during surgery and I couldn't move the hand and fingers for months, so no minor trauma, no stimulation of nail growth. After the nerve has healed they grow at the same rate as before.

QUESTION - please help. Every late fall to mid spring I struggle with my fingertips splitting. First time it happened was after I had my first son (21 years ago!) I have tried everything and I still suffer with this - and it is suffering! It hurts like crazy. The only thing that makes it feel better is bandaids with Neosporin but then the bandaids end up severely inflaming my cuticle and then my nails fall apart. I really just want to stop the splitting. Any suggestions Dr. Dray? Comment section?
@cautiouscoyote85909 ай бұрын
I used to have this problem until I added a few habits: (1) last thing at night massage in petroleum jelly or healing ointment (like CeraVe) concentrating on fingertips then cover with disposable gloves. When you awake toss the gloves & rub in the remaining lotion. (2) Be diligent wearing rubber gloves when doing dishes or any other wet cleaning. (3) Don't let your fingers get cold! Wear gloves outdoors as soon as the temperature starts dropping. Massage healing ointment into your fingertips & cuticles first if you have time & know you'll have the gloves on for a while. Keep a tube in your jacket pocket.

I feel your pain! I've found that putting a thick layer of Vaseline on my hands at night and then white cotton gloves has helped me a lot. But I still sometimes have splitting in the Winter.
