The KZbin channel “the salon life” really goes into depth on why we don’t need to mess with the PNF (proximal nail fold) and the difference between that and the cuticle. Very good info on caring for your nails on this channel. She also says stay away from the Russian manicure! Thanks Dr D for this great info

Speaking of “exercising” your nails, I’m 51 and I remember seeing women in offices filing paperwork and I would notice these long, beautiful, natural nails as they worked their fingers - sometimes so fast you would be amazed!

So my experience with having brittle nail syndrome is different. My index and middle finger nails grow the slowest and break easily, while my ring and pinky fingers grow claws. Lol I'm going to try the vaseline/glove strategy, so thanks for the tip!

@ajfuller83 watch "The Salon Life". 5:49 Dr Dray should have added the application of 'cuticle" oil which is really the "proximal nail fold" *before* applying petrolatum. The cuticle is the adhesive between our skin (proximal nail fold) and the top of our nail bed that protects our fingers against bacterial infection. Jojoba oil is the best most penetrative. Apply jojoba oil after every hand washing and before you go to bed around your nails, then apply petrolatum which is the occlusive to seal in the oil. I use 1-2 drops of jojoba oil on one nail and rub nails and surrounding skin on both hands against each other to spread and apply it so there is never oil on the front of my hands/fingers and I can go about my day. A little goes a long way. It would take three full days of soaking in jojoba oil for it to completely soak into the nail bed so this is why daiy use over time is required to be effective, it would likely take a full month of frequent, daily use to really start to demonstrate a difference. Once achieved, the rest is daily/nightly maintenance. Bliss Kiss makes excellent nail oil products and they work with nail anatomy scientist Doug Schoon who explains the distinction between the proximal nail fold and the cuticle. Their website is also informative in addition to The Salon Life. Also check out the comments to the videos from TSL.

I've been blessed with freakishly strong nails. Not sure why. I don't take supplements, rarely use nail polish, keep them super short and have hypothyroidism. Lol! They've been this way my whole life. I've never used fake nails which I understand can weaken them. And I don't push back my cuticles or trim them so maybe that has helped over the years. Happy Tuesday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a lovely evening. 💙

Omgoodness. That correlation between active fingers and faster nail growth is so true! It probably explained why my nails grew so much when I used to type a lot. It drove me crazy! I was always cutting them cause I found they got in my way since my nails grew straight out as opposed to curving upwards. Fascinating!

I have very soft flat nails that I can just tear off. I don't do any wet work etc that would cause soft nails. They only become a bit stronger and more rounded if I take a multivitamin supplement. I have Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and have seen many other people with EDS comment that they have soft and/or flat nails too which is interesting.

That was very interesting, now I finally know why my nails on my left hand grew extremly slow compared to the right hand after I had surgery on my left elbow. They accidentally damaged the radial nerve during surgery and I couldn't move the hand and fingers for months, so no minor trauma, no stimulation of nail growth. After the nerve has healed they grow at the same rate as before.

WONDERFUL video! I've got a couple questions. (1) I have always had nice nails, but now my middle and pointer nails grow with a bend on one side once they've about 1/4 inch, any thoughts on how to get them to grow straight out like they should ? I'm 55 and post menopause. (2) do you have a video on toenail fungus? My big toenails are thick/hard to trim, and the others are just brittle. I'd love you to help. Since I found YOU, you're the only person I really trust. Have a sweet day 💛

Do I need to see a doctor to get it removed or can I just wear a bandaid until it grows back. I tried to patch it with the teabag and nail glue method, but it didn’t work. It’s my dominant hand, index finger so it gets a lot of use! Thanks!!

I was fixated on a another video that covered nail fungus use along side minoxidil, then today I thought of the idea that you don't use antibiotics without a diagnosis.... does that apply antifungal TX as well?...because I used the "Kerasal"brand of nighttime 8-hr over night treatment on all ten nails...so main question is how do we know when we have nail fungus? QUESTION - please help. Every late fall to mid spring I struggle with my fingertips splitting. First time it happened was after I had my first son (21 years ago!) I have tried everything and I still suffer with this - and it is suffering! It hurts like crazy. The only thing that makes it feel better is bandaids with Neosporin but then the bandaids end up severely inflaming my cuticle and then my nails fall apart. I really just want to stop the splitting. Any suggestions Dr. Dray? Comment section?

I used to have this problem until I added a few habits: (1) last thing at night massage in petroleum jelly or healing ointment (like CeraVe) concentrating on fingertips then cover with disposable gloves. When you awake toss the gloves & rub in the remaining lotion. (2) Be diligent wearing rubber gloves when doing dishes or any other wet cleaning. (3) Don't let your fingers get cold! Wear gloves outdoors as soon as the temperature starts dropping. Massage healing ointment into your fingertips & cuticles first if you have time & know you'll have the gloves on for a while. Keep a tube in your jacket pocket.

I feel your pain! I've found that putting a thick layer of Vaseline on my hands at night and then white cotton gloves has helped me a lot. But I still sometimes have splitting in the Winter. To alleviate the soreness and pain I use super glue in the splits. It really helps and the soreness goes away almost immediately. 😊

In the blue chapstick sized bins of natural grocery stores, there is a petrolatum tube that helps splitting finger tips. I take it every fall/winter. It greatly dimishes the splits and painful fingertips

I appreciate all your replies! Thank you! Over the years I have done probably all of these things (OMG the crazy glue hurt so much!). It’s so weird that I never had it and now I always have it. I thought maybe it was a fungus or a vitamin deficiency or some other easily identifiable problem. I guess there are worse things so I will keep trying and hope for something to work. Have a great day!

I can’t wear polish for even a day, or I’ll pay for it with soft peeling nails for weeks. Always had soft nails. Is this just part of my genetics? Strengtheners don’t work either.

Hi Dr. Dray, could you make a video on gel manicures? I had one done a while back and I feel like it destroyed my nails. They did look nice though. I also worry about exposing my hands and nails to UV light with those lamps. Are they enough that cumulatively, they could cause skin cancer and make the hands age?

Bad asthma made me unable to breathe at night and cannot sleep at all. I had low blood oxygen level. My nail bed became uneven. It was scary looking. Since I started treatment my nails are back to normal and healthy looking. It took over s month. Use oil on fingertips after each hand wash helps. Take biotin supplement aids stronger and faster nail growth for me.

This video is so helpful, I'm turning 40 this year and my nail growth isn't as good as it used to be a few years ago. The Minoxidil tip really did blow my mind, my nails are usually painted though... Can I apply it around the nail edges and cuticles instead to absorb that way, or will that just give me hairy cuticles? 😂 Lol.

Question: is it ok if I just remove old dead skin from my nails without pushing or cutting the cuticle?

Funny how with my nails is the opposite. My nails are always stronger and longer on the hand that I don't use. Ie the left hand.

I had my eyebrows microbladed several years ago. I assume it is the reason the last half of my eyebrows is gone. No hair will grow there. The first half where there’s hair has gotten very sparse. I will be 60 this month. I know eyebrow hair gets sparse as you age. Is there anything I can do to make them grow back? If it killed the follicles I guess there’s nothing that can be done. Please help!

Microblade did not cause your issues. Age did. You could try eye lash growth serum on your eyebrows. Or just get your eyebrows touched up.

Hi Dr Dray, I went to check out the OPI Nail Envy Original Strengthener on the Ulta site. The reviews say it's been reformulated and doesn't work like the original. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you!
