I learned that collagen production slows down after 25 and consuming alcohol increases the rate of collagen loss. That alongside learning other downsides to alcohol eventually turned me from a high functioning alcoholic to quitting cold Turkey in January! Target had a huge sale on Orgain Collagen and Peptide Powder so I purchased it and wanted to learn more. I’ve been drinking it for 2 weeks and I noticed my nails had been transparent since 2018-ish. Now they are finally turning white 🫣💛

My husband and I have been taking hydrolyzed bovine collagen about 4 years (now ages 77 and 70). His skin had become very fragile and bruised terribly, plus he has type 2 diabetes. He has ZERO bruising and tearing now. My arthritic joints are much less painful, and I do think my skin is firmer. I use Dr. Youn’s brand. Thank you for this important update.

not that you asked, but i would suggest looking into increasing your daily serving size or perhaps switching to a collagen product with a larger serving size. in other words, because of the fact that people lose an increasingly higher amount of collagen as they age, you’ll probably benefit more from taking 10gr of collagen a day vs just 5gr. It makes sense on a superficial level since the more collagen you lose the more you would wanna take to replace that lost collagen, and recent research seems to confirm this.

I feel like since I've started about 2 months ago my flexibility training has been a lot more forgiving. It's good for skin but what I noticed most was more joint tolerance. It has softened some of my acne scars up a little, nothing crazy but certainly better than not taking them. I tried both collagen gummies and capsule peptides and felt like i got double the benefit overnight with peptides on an empty stomach than my body absorbed via gummies. Gummies just don't absorb as well.

I was diagnosed with Classical Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome about 20 years ago and have been taking powdered hydrolyzed collagen peptides for about the last 6-7 years. While the supplement doesn't change the fact that my body produces defective connective tissue, I have still found substantial benefits. My skin is still fragile, but it heals much more quickly when I take the supplement consistently. Instead of a zit tearing my skin and taking 6+ months to heal from being an open wound/scab, it now takes closer to 1-2 months. My joints sound less like rice krispies or bubble wrap popping with every movement and when I have inevitable injuries, I find that I am able to recover faster. I have taken breaks from taking the supplement off and on through the years due to money or questioning if it was actually helping. I can say with certainty there a noticeable difference when I stopped the collagen, which improved after a couple months to taking the collagen again. It's not a cure all, but it has improved my quality of life.

I really appreciate what you said about skin fragility . My dear late mum who died as a centenarian had such problems with fragile broken skin and pressure sores . It would have been great to help with that if it had been as simple as her taking a collagen drink. I have been taking collagen for my joints and since doing so my painful knee has completely cleared up. Oddly -I was only mentioning this the other day- also I no longer have such wrinkly and dry elbows and knees and I barely need to moisturise my arms and legs . I use tretinoin on my face so I couldn’t comment on any facial effects.

My 64 yr old skin is looking much better, especially better hydrated and glowing. Dr Dray's comments on this element have got me wondering if the extra glass of water each day is the main contributer? I didn't have many fine lines to begin with but hope to soon see improved firmness. My achy knees feel so much better. The soreness from my broken ankle in June is also finally gone. The only thing that I do not like is the laxative side effect. Ugh. Hate that part.

I started at age 54 because my daughter said it helped her recover from workouts faster...but she said had to take it regularly to enjoy that benefit. Aside from the improved recovery as she suggested I would feel, I have a more regular digestive flow than before. Before I would have occasional constipation like most people, but now it's pretty rare. I have to really fall down with my hydration to have my bowels slow down. What a lot of people don't realize is, those moments of our bowels slowing make us sluggish and less focused too so there's an indirect mental clarity that I think it causes.

I had visible changes to my skin, a dry patch that had taken up residence on my forehead disappeared, some red marks that had become enlarged due to more lax skin contracted. As for less wrinkles etc, not sure, though probably. Hi Dr. Dray, I took Vital Proteins marine collagen for about 8 months (2 scoops with my morning coffee). I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and have brittle nails and thin hair. After a few months my nails showed improvement and it appeared that my hair was falling out less. The best part was that my joints felt better as well. I stopped taking the collagen to see what would happen and after about 1 month, I noticed that my nails started to break again and my hair started to shed A-LOT! Three months later, my joints are becoming stiff again and my hair is thinner than ever. So, at least in my case, supplementing with hydrolyzed collagen seemed to work, but I will be putting it to the test again to be sure.

I was VERY reluctant to take collagen orally. I started (around 3 months ago) to see if my skin would heal better after TCA chemical peels and, in general, as anti-wrinkle support. I'm 46, so I need extra collagen to compensate for not producing as much as I did when younger. So far I've noticed: 1) Joint improvement. I had a constant ticking sound on my knee when bending, and after a few weeks, it's completely gone, and my knee also feels more flexible. 2) The healing process after my chemical peels is getting faster (1/2 days faster, I would say, considering that I do them regularly and know my skin healing times quite well). 3) As for the overall aging process of the skin, I can't tell for a few reasons: I take many supplements already (Ubiquinol and others) and I have also used tretinoin since when I was in my 20s and apply sunscreen constantly so my skin, despite my age doesn't have visible wrinkles yet. When I smile or move my face, I have dynamic wrinkles, but they still don't leave any sign. I think I will keep taking it for the benefits I got in these areas, hoping for the best also for my skin. Oh almost forgot, I didn't notice anything particular about my hair growth because even though I have androgenetic alopecia, my hair grows at a super fast rate anyways, so I can't truly tell.

I'm 46, been going through perimenopause for 4 years, suffer from fibromyalgia and graves disease and orthostatic hypotension(extremely chronic low blood pressure). I started "Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides" 3 years ago. I personally haven't seen ANY benefits or changes to my thinning hair, brittle nails, great loss of elasticity, painful joints, extremely painful muscles.... I stopped taking the 2.5 scoops daily after being on it for 3 years. After 3 months off I saw no decline. Then I started really making sure I was drinking 60 fluid oz's of water daily and THAT'S when I noticed elasticity improvement. Plumping of my dehydrated skin really. Note: I consistently took the collagen powder daily with 1,000 mg vitamen C. I stay out of the sun as much as possible. I wear sunscreen (the ACTUAL correct amount daily and reapplied every 2 hours. I WISH I was one of the ones that experienced great results! Now I'm saving money and just sticking to my suggested water intake. Just bummed out that I never noticed any changes. Even took before and after photos every 30 days.

I have been taking vital proteins or boost collagen for almost two years (except for a 3 month break, see below. ) I was skeptical but also interested because I am now over 70 and was noticing first of all more brittle nails than I was used to, hair thinning at my temples and part---enough so that I started changing my hair style (my family has plentiful thick hair as the hair stylist at my niece's wedding noticed--even my mother in her 90s has a lot of hair, so while this was a change I noticed, to it was not a cosmetic crisis). And my skin was, of course, also showing changes. Over the past two years of working from home, I had used the time saved not commuting, to focus on health by improving my diet and my exercise. I lost a considerable amount of weight and still have a little more to lose to be at a healthy weight. I am interested in anything i can do to encourage skin elasticity after weight loss. All that said, I find that collagen supplements in my morning drink left me feeling more full, which was a plus and provided my body with useful building blocks. The first thing I noticed after close to a year was that my nails stopped breaking. I am fairly convinced that resulted from collagen. Skeptic that I am, I took a break from collagen for a few months and, in fact, nails got worse, and then improved several months after restarting collagen. I think that is a causal event. I also think (in addition to tretinoin and spf) it has helped with skin elasticity. This took much longer to see than the nail improvement. It may be beginning to help me with my hair too, but it will take longer for me to be convinced on that. I have slowly become a believer, but think it is important to use good brands. Costco has the best price on Vital Proteins collagen than I have found elsewhere, although at be least to sample it, iherb.com has smaller sizes of Vital Proteins if you want to sample it for a month before coming to a Costco sized tub. Thank you for the update!

I love Dr. Dray's videos. So informative. She gives out so much information in each video that I found it confusing...so I created a spreadsheet! I list all the products, the ingredients in each product, with a column for each major ingredient that is proven to help skin, and I check off each product for each column if that product has that ingredient. Phew! I cross reference to Dr. Dray's videos, too! She's been so helpful to me as I make my way through the 60's, when some awful things starting happening to my skin. Tiny sun spots, dark undereye circles suddenly appeared, jowls...yikes! NOW? I get compliments on my skin fairly often! Really. I'm like, "ME?" People don't even get close to guessing my age (but they're not looking closely). The major thing is...I started wearing a mineral-based strong sunblock on my face every single day. Even if it's cloudly. Even if I'm staying indoors. I'm still learning and trying out different kinds of products. Like Vitamin C serums....didn't work for me. Yes, I tried top quality for over a year...no difference that I can tell. Out with the Vitamin C! I use straight pure lemon juice now, instead, and rinse it off. Does it help? Well, it helps as much as the expensive Vit C serum did, but costs almost nothing. Biggest help besides sunblock? Retinaldehyde! I started taking Vital Proteins collagen, so I'm interested in knowing if I can expect it to help.

I’m 27 and I tried to use collagen last year everyday for 4 months. I don’t know what happened, but I’m completely wrecked my immune system. My lips and eyes feel burning hot all the time. My whole body is itchy. I have pain all over my abdomen and it feels like hot water is running down my legs. I get sick very easily now. I felt completely fine and healthy before I started collagen. Recently after a year of going to the doctor and running tests, I got one positive auto immune test, so hopefully with a biopsy I can finally get diagnosed. But beware of collagen. You’re better off just drinking water or eating healthy. If you’re really desperate get plastic surgery, but I’m just warning anyone out there that you may end up being one of the people that gets bad side effects from collagen like me.

Dr. Dray, Excellent discussion. Both of my older sisters, my niece and daughter-in-law take these supplements. One concern I expressed to them is the unknown effect on their microbiome. The fact that digestive issues have occurred suggests that the supplements are adversely affecting the.bacterial communities. Have any studies examined fecal samples to specifically identify the degree to which these supplements are disrupting the balance of good and bad gut bacteria? This to me is a major issue as studies continue to show the importance of a healthy microbiome and the potential adverse effect on all of the relevant systems. I'm opposed to ingesting these types of things, especially with the risks associated with the downstream multi-level supply chains and all the things that can go on. Thanks again. I will share your video with all the ladies in my family. SoCalFreddy

So I used collagen protein as my main protein source for maybe 6-7 years and eventually it seems to have lead to debilitating migraines that increased gradually over a few years until I was getting migraines multiple times per week. As a complete and desperate fluke, I did an elimination diet and my migraines resolved almost immediately. As I was adding foods back in, it was extremely clear that the collagen was causing the migraines. Since then I’ve eliminated it completely and even avoid gelatin (including in medication capsule). Now, I think I may have some more oddities in my system than the average person (I have autism and we tend to have a number of weird health issues), but I hope there is some research about possible connections with migraines and collagen supplementation. Granted I think I was using way too much, but I messed myself all the way up with it.

I have been using it since 14 years ago. It was introduced by my dad’s doctor after my dad broke his leg and arm (he fell off of bicycle. He was 71 years old .) in Taiwan. The doctor told him to use NeoCell Super Collagen Peptides (collagen was hard to find in Taiwan back then, and they were very expensive .) 8 in the morning and 8 before bed time. So I shipped 6 bottles to him. To make the long story short. His doctor removed both cases within a month. Some people assumed he wouldn’t walk again or moving much after he broke his legs, but he’s still hiking, walking, yoga..and he’s 86 years old now. I am 56 years old. I don’t have grey hair yet. 😊

I have been taking hydrolized collagen peptides (10 grams/day) for over two years now. I started not so much for fine lines and wrinkles but to avoid skin thinning that I saw in my mother and my sister. I am 74 years old and I have noticed better skin texture and strengthening of my skin all over my body. If that is all I get from taking collagen, I am willing to continue. The tearing of my mother's and my sister's skin (btw, sis is 10 years younger) was/is alarming. I have suggested collagen for this reason to my sister. My mom died at 90 almost two years ago. At 59, I still have wrinkles and my hair density is still getting finer (Been using the Irestore for about same amount of time). I do, however, notice what I feel. After 15 years of playing tennis almost daily in my 20's and 30's, got a case of tennis elbow in my 50's. Elbow was so bad it hurt to manipulate a pen. The only thing I did different: start putting collagen powder in my coffee every morning. I don't recall how long it took to work but it did work. Husband, 3 years older, complaining about his knees going up and down the stairs in our home. Heard him grunting with every step. Told him, put my collagen powder in your coffee. Don't recall how long it took (because it does takes a little while. It isn't an overnight miracle), but he hasn't grunted going up and down the stairs in our home since shortly after he started daily collagen powder in his coffee. It certainly worked on our joints.

Hello Dr. Dray, thank you for covering this topic. I was very skeptical with taking collagen supplements for so long, as I very much assumed, any peptides you took would basically break into the amino acids and would be used in the body as any other amino acids, based on priority. I am a vet plus a clinical research professional, so I need to be skeptical. However, after reading some reliable sources, I decided to take the leap. I am taking Vital Proteins Bovine Collagen 10 grams with my coffee every morning and Solgar hyaluronic acid collagen complex tablet every day. I cannot speak to my nail or hair for sure, but I have had improvements in some joint pains that I had. One was due to mouse-use on my right index finger, the other was on my right hip joint due to my seating arrangement for home office work, one other was for a healing toe joint which I had hurt in July 2021. I felt a great improvement in all three of these joint issues. For skin, hair or nails, İ cannot comment, because I am also using certain skincare products and have always been a huge water drinker. Plus, to see improvement in hair and nails, we need to wait until the regrowth replaces most of what we have, so it does take a while to test out the strength. Growth speed is another story, I have not experienced anything speeding up, at least in the 4 months that I have been taking the supplements. But then again, the stuff could be going to higher-priority sites instead of hair and nails, so no complaints there. And yes, I do know there are different kinds of collagen for different kinds of functions, which is why I am taking 1-2-3 from different brands.

I'm researching to improve it without medicine. There are different types of collagen (from to 5). type II (2) from chicken is more appropriate for elastic cartilage, which provides joint support. Look for the study at google. I key the question: "Types of collagen", I selected the one from clevelandclinic. 1st. learned about the types viewing comments at Amazon under chicken collagen.

Thank you for the update! The thing l continue to find bothersome about nutritional studies is the lack of quality control. 1) lt's still not completely transparent which MDs are funded by the industry. This is especially a problem in the US where while nutrition departments can be funded by an industry. 2) The "is it the supplement or is it just more hydration" question is easily addressed by a placebo control. That should just be automatically in place and in clinical trials, which are highly regulated, you won't get a study approved if it doesn't have these controls in place and if the samples size is too small, but nutrition studies just aren't regulated like this. 3) There are methods, including less invasive methods than biopsy, to checking collagen integration (for example isotope labelling), but usually the studies aren't funded enough to do them. I would love for there to be at least some sort of quality control guidelines and certification for nutritional studies. On another note, the collagen demand is fuelling Amazon deforestation. As in slash and burn of forest is done to make way for highly unethical farms to produce cheap collagen. So if you do use it and find it helps you, I hope you check out where the collagen is coming from.

It also seems to improve my scalp and hair health. I have not noticed benefits in my nail growth or overall nail health. I have been taking collagen for several years now. In a vanilla flavored powder in my coffee. This particular one also has MCT powder and acacia fiber in it as well. I actually started taking it more for the MCT powder and the collagen and fiber were just added bonuses but one of the biggest benefits I saw was no more wrist pain whereas I had been dealing with increasing pain off and on for years prior----sometimes to the point that I could barely hold a pen to write and I was only in my 30s!!! I'll be 46 in 2 more months and I get told all the time that I don't look my age. I have friends who joke that I'm a vampire because I look younger now than when they met me a decade (or more) ago and my kids' friends (high school age) think I'm in my 20s somehow. I get a kick out of that one but I don't put much stock in it because, well......they're kids and I'm routinely stupefied by how my own kids' brains work and I know for a fact that they're extremely bright.😂 Objectively, I have no wrinkles nor the beginnings of any and haven't noticed any sagging. Now, my eyelids give me fits and bunch up when putting on eyeshadow but that's the only thing I've noticed. Oh, and the beginnings of the neck wattle when I accidentally turn on my front facing camera so those things should be outlawed. I've been really rough on my skin my entire life: sleeping in makeup every night, never moisturizing, ignoring advice to rub things in gently with no pulling/tugging, the only sunscreen I wear is whatever happens to be in my makeup (although I spend a ton of time indoors so there's that), skin care is Noxema scrubbed in with a Buf Puf pad, etc. In the last few months I've begun to moisturize almost every day and use other serums occasionally and I just watched another video that talks about why exfoliating too much is bad so I guess I'll reduce my Buf Puf pad usage now. 😔 I couldn't say for sure whether my collagen intake has contributed to any of the lack of wrinkles, etc. but I definitely know it helped my wrist pain so it gets an A+ from me.

Thank you for a very informative episode. I've been taking 20g of Vital Proteins a day from bovines for about 8 months. It includes 80mg of Hyaluronic Acid and 90mg Vitamin C. I saw a line on my nails where there was a distinct difference between old and new growth. The old growth was slightly darker red than the new growth. Whether this is related to the collagen or just a coincidence, I don't know. But the new growth does not have any dark lines or spots. I have not really seen any reduction to skin repairs in my legs. I have some scratches on my knees that resulted by a fall while running. I blame my dog, he zigged when he should've zagged. They have turned almost purple and it's been at least 8 months or longer since I fell. I can't speak much to joint health. I have a torn or nonexistent Meniscus. But I can say that my joints don't ache as much but this could be exercise or some other factor. FYI, I'm 61...

Thank you for the video on this subject! I started taking Vital Proteins (just the first one I noticed and tried) in February, to see if it would help with my brittle nails and hair loss. I'm 56, and both my GP and my dermatologist just sort of shrugged off these things as part of post-menopause/aging/genetics. Since starting to take it, I have noticed a difference in the hair loss. It has slowed it and I have noticed that areas where my scalp was starting to be more visible seem to be filling in some. If I forget to take it for several days, I notice an increase in hair fall. I think it has helped with my nails too. I have not noticed my hair or nails growing more quickly. I also had not really equated any changes in my skin with it, since my skin generally looks better in the warmer, more humid months in Texas; but maybe it is helping with that too.

I’ve been putting bovine collagen powder in my smoothie daily hoping to see a difference in hair, skin & nails. The first & most impressive change I noticed was in my joints & muscles. My very bad knees that were overdue for steroid injections I had gotten used to….I couldn’t make it up a few steps without wanting to cry. Over a year on collagen, no knee injections and I can run up the whole flight of stairs with zero pain in my knees. Also, if I overdo it exercising and pull a muscle, it feels recovered the next day whereas it used to take on average 3-4 days. Then I noticed more hydration in my skin. My roommate has claimed my skin has been glowing a lot more since collagen. Now, a year later, after a decade of the hair around the crown of my head being thinned out through hormone injections…the thickness of the hair around the crown of my head is all back to its thickest. I won’t go without my collagen now. I got a toenail fungus I’ve been trying to cure naturally from wearing warm socks 24/7, so I don’t even wanna go there. Lol. Omg.
