When looking to enlarge the side face of a reasonably large hole, try not adopt a dig "up hill" position, as you're virtually trying dig up the tremendous weight of the ground above the pick. Stand to the other side, and strike down at the opposing side, whereby you can take a larger "bite", and let gravity assist with giving up more broken up clay in a shorter amount of time. I've found it works every time. Hope this tip helps. Hmm, dynamite's not bad too, but it tends to spread any Gold all over, which only increases the workload on detecting to recover it. You take a handful out the scoop, check scoop, if positive, you throw the handful away.... Why don't you double check the handful again incase of another nugget?? I'm aware its unlikely, just thought it may be a good idea to not assume

Am I wrong? I see this in other metal detecting videos too. When you guys are sifting the pile, after getting the nugget out of the hole, I see you divide the dirt in the scoop and wave either your hand or the scoop back over the coil. If it's a hit, you immediately throw away everything in the other hand! What if you chopped the nugget in two? Aren't you possibly losing some gold? Scan both hands each time? Also, if there is one nug' in the hole, wouldn't it be logical to search the immediate vicinity for its traveling companions? Just asking. Otherwise, WOO HOO! GOLD!

Nice finds but please, please, PLEASE tell me you went back over the holes after you found your nuggets. He would pour some into his hand and check the scoop and toss the dirt in his hand without ever checking it first. Good way to throw away possible multiple targets.

Pinpointers are rarely of any use for gold nuggets - most nuggets are under a gram and using a pinpointer is actually a lot slower to locate the target or just doesn't work all in locating the nugget when in the hole. Can be useful with much larger nuggets (rare) with regards to avoiding some digging and damaging the gold with the pick. Coin / jewellery hunters in Australia almost always use pinpointers because they work great in that application.

One problem with your technique. When you dump some dirt in your hand, then wave the scoop over the detector and hear the tone, then throw away what is in your hand, you could be trowing away a second nugget! Wave your hand over the detector BEFORE throwing away the dirt. I just noticed a similar comment, below. But if you recheck the pile and find another beep, then you have to go through all of that a second time, wasting time.

+au69miner mmmmm that's not true. They sell bulk spot all the time. Believe me when he unloads his gold he is going to get spot for his small nuggets and fines. Sure big nuggets go for more but I do know they sell the smells for spot and if they didn't he would go broke because he would have no money. Gold is only worth money if sold. I remember one KZbinr had a million in gold spot but wouldn't sell and I bet his stash was either stolen or not worth nearly as much as it was. He can sell to me for spot today and tomorrow his gold could be worth 800 an ounce and he would have lost money. Obviously he wouldn't sell large nuggets for spot but I asked if he would sell me anything for spot since I buy gold and have a lot why not give him business

Your testing procedure is predicated upon there being only one nugget. If there were two nuggets, you could very well be throwing them away. You have a scoop with a positive signal. You split that scoop in half and within that first half, you again had a positive signal.. You threw away the second half untested. Had there been two nuggets, one in each half,, you'd have only discovered the one. You can do a secondary sweep over the entire spoils pile,,, but that becomes difficult if you have thrown and scattered the spoils.
