Chuck Lorre pitched the show and told the network that the lead would be somebody like Charlie Sheen, and the network said, can you get him? Then Chuck goes to Charlie and Charlie said not until he got a script. So Chuck writes the pilot and gives it to Charlie. Charlie said that when he read the line about Jake being better than a dog he signed on. The whole thing is on the DVD of season 1 extras. I wish I knew how to post it with out getting in trouble. Also, they only wanted Angus, and Jon had to beg for an audition because they didn't want him. Straight from all the horses mouths
