From what I understand Sociopaths have trouble controlling their emotions and impulses, so if they feel like doing it they will. They might regret it but they will still likely do it again out of their control. A psychopath genuinely does not think what they are doing is wrong. It's the most logical thing and even common sense to do the things they do, if they kill or hurt someone they genuinely wonder why others are making a big deal of it. Both can feel emotions, they just don't process it the way we do

I think if the show ended with Dexter turning himself in and being sentenced to life in prison, that would be a happy ending for him. He would no longer have to pretend. And he'd probably be famous. The public would probably praise him as a hero, and he'd exit the courthouse to a crowd of cheering people holding up banners to support Dexter (like he always dreamed). He'd be the most famous serial killer in existance. He'd be interviewed by everyone. He'd write bestselling books. He'd still work as a consultant for the police and FBI on blood spatter and criminal profiling. He'd probably teach seminars on on advanced methods of profiling serial killers. Psychologist would love to talk to him and learn about his psych, plus he'd actually be able to talk to a psychologist to work through his trauma. And he'd feel no temptation to kill because his code won't allow him to target criminals in prison. I think that would have been a proper happy ending for Dexter. Also where Deb is alive and raising Harrison.

He even found and dug up the missing bodies of kids that were victims of one of the killers he was hunting. After season 5, the feel and story line of the series declined. The gem we had practically disappeared, the writers took a route with the story that was at times unreal and illogical for the characters, the villains actors selection declined significantly. What made Dexter a cultural Icon was Michael C Hall and the writing/acting of the first five seasons.
