When a player has to be the best goal scorer and best assist man in a bad team then of course his defense is going to go down. I am sure his coaches tell him to play his offensive game because the Shark's do not have a go to guy offensively right now (Hopefully that will be Will Smith in the future). Karlsson could just focus on defense if he was in a better team!

@@WorldisGone Seriously. Dubas not only got one of the best defenseman in the league, he got Petry and Granlund’s contracts out at the same time. Nobody got “fleeced” but I’m thrilled for what the Pens got. No matter what, 87, 71, and 58’s final years will be fun and competitive.

Had one good year for the sharks when it didn't matter, because the team around him was gutted. If he had played close to this level for the past 4 years, he'd still be in San Jose, and they'd likely still have a winning team. As a sharks fan, it was too late for this kind of performance. He needed to go for the full rebuild to begin.

Apparently it’s the 80s again. At least when Paul Coffey won his Norris Trophies, it was at a time when scoring was everything. We’re not in the Dead Puck Era anymore, but it’s not exactly 1985. The Best Defenseman shouldn’t just be the guy who scores a lot of points. Then again, we award the Best Defensive Forward to the guy who scores 70 points, so whoever is voting needs a dictionary. Guy Charbonneau would never win a single Selke in today’s NHL. That’s embarrassing. The more American the game becomes, the less sense it makes - which shouldn’t be surprising. The game went downhill starting in 1995 and hasn’t made sense since. 1990-94 was still the best era for hockey.

@BigWyatt
@BigWyatt 11 ай бұрын
@@TheHeston83these boomers are something else while they can make argument about having a separate award for the actual best defensive defenseman, that I will listen to. Saying the 90s is the best hockey ever is laughable. The game has only trended more towards skill and scoring. What was the goalie league avg last year again like .906? It’s respectable and you still have the dynamite goalies, but they’re few and far between and the game has progressed and advanced so much that even fourth line guys are expected to pot 8-10 goals and anywhere from 20-30 points. Todays game is so much more skill based the idea that the 90s was the best and everything has been downhill since, is a good joke but that’s about all it is.
@greathoonta3461
@greathoonta3461 11 ай бұрын
While I agree with your defence point, I gotta disagree about the Selke. The man who wins the Selke needs to be a treat two way forward, this means he needs to score points as well as defend. He needs to be good on offence while being amazing on defence which is why you get Selke winners like Bergeron, Barkov, Toews, Datsyuk, O’Reilly, etc. players who are very good on offence while also being great pm defence. This is why players like Philip Danault don’t win it. They are amazing on defence but meh on offence which isn’t the true spirit of the award.

@@TheHeston83 Yes, I like my hockey rough, hard and with fight and passion. Today look more like balett on skates. Political messaging is more important than the game itself, to many breaks in the periods, harder rules has created more head injuries and concussions than before. The protection on golies are way to large for example. The sticks are more like a "bow" instead of a stick... So yes, hockey is not so much hockey as before. I will not get with the times, I know whats good and whats bad, thats something age teaches you.

Yes, he did amass an insane amount of points for a D Man but in my opinion he's not actually that good at the actual defense part. 101 points but a -26. Should the Norris winner be a more well rounded defender? Might be my hot take though. Either way incredible season again for him when everyone thought his career was in the dumpster.
