I watched Thunderpants as a kid and they don’t even touch on the craziest fucking part of the movie. At one point, an opera singer hears how high pitched the kids farts are, so he hires him to fart during his shows whenever he hits high notes. But instead his fart is so powerful that it causes a stage-light to fall and kill the opera singer. So then, the kid gets arrested and put on trial for murder where (and I am not making this up) HE GETS SENTENCED TO DEATH BY FIRING SQUAD. Luckily though NASA show up at the last second and save his life because they want to use his farts to power their spaceship. This movie is fucking bonkers.

I own and have gifted Thunderpants at least once or twice. The movie is pretty solid, has quite good production quality, and is totally filled with big name actors (many early in their careers, but several established ones.) It’s way better than it has any right to be, but it was made with the love and confidence needed to allow it any chance to succeed.

Thunderpants is a very, very British film. The reason that a) Britain made a kids’ film about farts and b) it had 22 farts in the first five minutes is because we really, really love toilet humour. There’s a line in an episode of Blackadder Goes Forth where the main characters have been captured by a German officer, and he remarks that the English are “lucky to find the toilet so amusing. For us it is a mundane and functional item; for you, the basis of an entire culture.” I don’t think Britain has ever been better summed up. Sidenote: the sixth form college I went to about 20 years ago had a massive Thunderpants lobby poster in the canteen for some reason. Before now I hadn’t seen a single second of the film.
