I was in my Aikido class, my 3rd MA after Karate and Taekwondo. In comes a black man observing the class. During break, he asked if I wanted to see something. He popped in the face, chess and then my nose so fast, I didn't see it coming. Told me it was JKD.

He is Tommy Carruthers and is a Jeet Kune Do student of Jesse Raymond Glover. Jesse Raymond Glover, on the other hand, is Bruce Lee's first student. Tommy Carruthers is the real deal in JKD.

I agree. A lot imitate Bruce for on-screen purposes. But seeing Tommy move in action, between the rhythm, always ready and the stance and fundamentals are the closest I've seen to Bruce's actual self-defense methods.

I dont know how good TC really is but his kicks are lighting fast. My hand speed is just as fast but in all my training I have never been able to kick fast as Tommy and I havent seen anybody else in real life kick as fast as him except on film. Ive been all over the States, Korea and japan - seen some great martial artist but nobody who could kick this fast

In the IFO he doesn't train to spar...but to FIGHT.......Plus JKD is not about collecting techniques but daily DECREASE.

@@greecostyler well yes, sparring does help, but what I was saying is the street has no rules. They will blindside you, fake you, try to draw your attention to other places before they strike.. and of course, one does that very thing if threatened... strike first! No rules. No fair play. Sparring helps some, but try FOF (force on force) training. It is better than sparring!

How did it go? And was he as fast as his videos? His method is the closest I've seen to Bruce's real self-defense methods. Down to the stance, speed, and body weight distribution (Keeps his upperbody away from attack which in part also helps open hips up for faster kick)

Christopher, Tommy doesn't train his students to 'spar' ,,,he trains them to fight....& yes, there are pressure elements involved...His instruction looks nothing like his demo here...Here he is just showing economy off the starting blocks. Nothing more. Don't look at one demo & assume that's all he does in ALL his training..Daft as a brush analysis.

Reps....Reps....REPS.....& MORE REPS..........Millions of them.....Over Decades.....Working with resistance bands exercises....One of his apprentice instructors told me that once he did 12 THOUSAND punches in ONE DAY....Plus he has naturally fast muscle twitch fibres.....Another factor is his unmatched understanding of Body Mechanics and how to apply to them Principles of Simplicity & Directness to refine them. His upper body is VERY strong with power to weight ratio....When he was a boy Tommy used to climb trees endlessly. This gave him massive upper body strength which he uses today to blast through complexity pak sau like a blow torch through butter.....

He use to be a bouncer and I'm sure he used it while doing so...jkd isn't karate for point scoring or mma... it's training the body to put a person down for real in real life or death scenarios, like military hand to hand combat training. It's not a sports martial arts

@@liam-n8098 Towards the end of Bruce's life he was drilling "sure fire" killing techniques if he ever had to use them. One of the technique was the eyejab (a fight ender, especially with steel fingers and power like Bruce) and some sort of neck twist mentioned in the notes. These are street techniques that you just dont do in sparring. On any given day, the much smaller man can win in the chaos of a street fight

@@liam-n8098 have you ever tried to poke someone in the eye in a fight, there is too much head movement for that to work effectively you have more chance scoring with a punch and even a lot of punches are thrown that don't always land. I throw some pretty fast punching combinations on my heavy bag and my wing chun dummy is modified so I can throw eye finger jabs but when I spar with my sparing partners they are not stationary and are throwing punches back. I have very really been able to connect with a finger jab to the eye. Stationary target yeah

This is the style I use.... hands, feet, mind. I also train that way with my CCW guns (I'm in Texas)! Use quite a bit of the same mental and physical training methods. Way ahead of other systems.

It will always function RELIABLY.....MMA only evolves into something to fit the demands of a money making machine by appealing to all audiences. That's not legit evolution in a legit practical survival sense. ....Never confuse money making evolution in a sport with practical survival evolution in the street.
