Procreate is very nice and innovative but ArtStudio is a Powerhouse for mobile digital Painting. Very Photoshop alike, can only recommend it.

To be honest, you can just use both the apps in harmony rather then compare, Art Studio Pro is like the closer, you start off in Procreate and when it comes to problems like canvas resizing, just import to Art studio .

I just discovered ArtStudio Pro and my jaw dropped as it imported all my Photoshop brushes, dynamics and all, without skipping a beat, AMAZING! Never mind the app though, what a fantastic review you put together, this must have taken you forever. You covered everything as if you were answering all my questions right before I asked them... perfect. I've been in love with Procreate for a while now and now I'm thrilled to discover ArtStudio Pro. I'm pretty sure I will continue to use them both, just as I'm also sure I will watch any new videos you put out. Thanks Borodante!

Great video. I use both apps professionally and I prefer ASP. You forgot to mention that you can import PS brushes .abr and tool presets .tpl into ASP without converting them using third party apps. You can also transform the UI in ASP to be minimalist just like Procreate.

I really enjoyed this comparison. I also feel that these are the two major players in terms of drawing/painting apps on iOS. I’m also finding that at this point in time Artstudio Pro is more pro with its rich feature set. Two things that I would add to the pros of Artstudio Pro would be: •Best in class support of ABR, TPL brushes ( Photoshop brushes ). • The ability to have multiple projects open at the same time. Both of these features are game changers for me. I love being able to use my favorite Kyle T Webster brushes in Artstudio Pro and they’re interpreted very well. Thanks again. I love your sense of humor and thorough explanation of your experiences.

Well, I doubt tablet painting will fully replace desktop. I have Artstudio Pro on Mac as well a iPad and it's IDENTICAL on both platforms-- even syncing changes seamlessly as you switch between them. But, I still think I can work much more easily and effectively with a pen tablet and the desktop app and a big screen than on the tablet. Being able switch between desktop and iPad is another big advantage for Artstudio Pro in my opinion.

Something you did not mention also is that Artstudio Pro has the ability to apply Auxiliary Colours (called COLOR DYNAMICS in photoshop I think...) which you said was useful in your previous video of "How to Paint Nothing" in order to add texture to your paintings. Procreate does not have that. That's a pretty big advantage. Boro I cannot thank you enough for this most well-timed video. I've been watching your videos for a while and could not understand why my brushes looked so flat compared to yours using procreate... I dissected an paused most of your photoshop brush making videos and FINALLY understand the whole problem that Procreate does not allow the use of flow and opacity to get that awesome textured look. Based on your advice I bought Artstudio Pro a few days ago and bam... an entirely new WORLD of possibilities with textures and flow is now available to me. Now this review just came out and further solidifies my opinion on the matter. For anyone wanting to following your overall "approach" to painting (avoiding silhouettes, getting the initial shapes and shadows on your canvass using pressure-triggered flow AND opacity and some random colors to "search" for the objects and then build from there...) it's just not really optimal with the procreate brushes. Artstudio is the way to go for me and synergizes well with your approach which I happen to think is quite logical. You have absolutely changed my perspective on painting by your philosophy but I just couldn't connect to it because the procreate brushes were not allowing me to use your method fully. It's all clicked for me now. Thank you so much and keep being awesome!

I like Procreate, but you just mentioned 2 things that actually make me interested in Artstudio. One, having my hard round photoshop brush, and the second is having a similar smudge tool. I've only come close to finding a replacement for my photoshop brush in Procreate, but so far there is no brush that feels spot on, so I stick to pencils. Procreate's smudge feel more like a blur than a smudge.

I know you like Paintstorm Studio for desktop, but wondered why you didn't like it for the Ipad. Myself I find it very laggy, maybe that's also why you don't like it. How about rotation/manipulation? Procreate really annoys me with the way that I can't simply rotate a selection - it always scales as well as rotating, so I can't keep the object the same size. Or is there a finger trick I am missing?

Great comparison & show of the differences. I think your review is pretty much spot on. Much of the so called "professional workflow" is about time & time management. One extra click doesn't seem like much, but if that adds up to one extra click every 5 seconds it gets really time consuming. I also agree that for the most part & at first glance art studio pro seems to be aimed more towards "professionals", simply because of the options. But then again I know quite some artists that are in every sense professionals (interestingly enough almost all of them started out as traditional artists) that love procreate for its "gets out of your way" approach. I'm somewhat in the middle of the two and that's why I'm so happy that both apps exist. They're different - but in a good way. I love to work in Procreate and how it differs from the PS style of doing things - I do pieces from start to finish in it (I too love the wet brushes!). But I also love what Art Studio Pro is doing and being able to work in a more PS like manner on my iPad Pro is a godsend. Both on its on and for those times Procreate doesn't have a certain feature or you'd have to substitute which can be time consuming (like faking adjustment layers). So, to cut it short. Both apps deserve an A+, complete each other very well and I indeed look forward to 2019 or 2020, when all the 2D work can reliably & easily be done on tablets.

I didn't know about ArtStudio Pro until I saw your videos, and I'm glad I got the app. The number one thing I like the most about ArtStudio Pro (aside from the clipping layers) is that my iPad does NOT overheat. Whenever I open Procreate and work on a document, my iPad always gets hot (most of the time, it overheats so much that it scares me). With ArtStudio, I can be working on a document for an hour, and my iPad stays cool.

Thank you for these comparisons. I agree with everything you say. I love all the bells and whistles in ArtStudio Pro but I find that the simplicity of Procreate works better for me in the creative process. And the auto save function in ArtStudio is really annoying and I have to wear a glove because of the palm rejection not being as effective as in Procreate. Will try to set the auto save to 0 minuets as suggested and see if I like it. In Procreate 4.1 they added symmetry, liquify, and warp, which I’m quite excited about. You can use both apps together. For instance you can start in Procreate and then export your file as a PSD into ArtStudio or the other way around. It will preserve all the layers.

Artstudio seems very good. I have never heard of it but definitely should give it a try.
@LuckyClan6 жыл бұрын
In Artstudio you dont have to duplicate documents to keep older versions. If you are using iCloud storage, it stores a document version after each save. Versions are automatically created by iCloud mechanism, not Artstudio itself. You can then revert to any old version in Artstudio gallery (i have no idea why apple didn’t add this feature in Files app). There is an additional advantage - iCloud versions are (probably) not counted to your iCloud disk quota! This mechanism does not work if you are using Local storage.

Affinity Photo and the upcoming Affinity Design look like the right tools for that. I think with both, procreate and scrivener, for my writing, is everything I need in my professional and creative daily work. So yes, for me my iPad Pro 2017 12,9 replaced my laptop. I do not know your thoughts about the affinity series in the iPad, I would love to know your thoughts. Great video!

I love both a lot, but I find myself using procreate to make my backgrounds or do sketches if I want them to look like actual pencil. I usually finish things off in art studio because the brushes are cleaner and the tools in it are easier to apply. While in procreate I kinda feel like I'm fumbling around.

Hey, could you make a video talking about how do you use layers in Artstudio Pro? One of the main reasons I like it more than Procreate is that it doesn't have a limit on the number of layers you can use. But I am having some problems migrating my workflow to Artstudio Pro, the main reason being how the wet pain tool works in transparent layers, it doesn't support transparency blending and I use that a lot in procreate.

You may "sticky-switch" to eyedropper in Procreate by holding square small button on control toolbar under your left hand. There are lot of options actually in prefs menu how to activate eydropper. touch+hold your pen used for strait lines instead. Any strait lines in Artstudio ?

Hello, I love your videos, your voice is basically asmr for me xD. Question, not related to this video, but would you pick gaomon display tablet or new huion 191 v2 which is coming out about now? :-)
@SugarTouch6 жыл бұрын
For color palette all time on your screen just make shot of it and place on top layer in image itself. Then use eyedropper. You may even create your own mixed/smudged IRL-like palette instead of square boxes. It's not full color box, but you usually work with limited number of colors at the same time. Just like you do with real paints and canvas...

I’m a huge lover of Procreate, in fact I bought my iPad Pro specifically for this app alone. I’m an illustrator, who had used the Wacom on and off for a couple of years but was a little sick of using it on my slow and old MacBook. I absolutely love it so much still (Procreate), however am in full agreement with the features it is missing (which is odd considering it is such a powerful app). In saying all this, Procreate did just finally update yesterday or the day before, and they now have liquify and warping, as well as more assisted drawing (symmetrical mirroring etc) and a few other cool features which I am loving. I am really interested in hearing all your thoughts and opinions because it would be nice to try and use artsudio Pro too. Thank you for your reviews, opinions and feedback for these apps! Go check out the new update on Procreate though, it’s nice!
@MrMichelPM6 жыл бұрын
One BIG advantage of ArtStudio/ArtStudio Pro that I have always liked, is that it mimics the Photoshop UI quite a bit and works quite a bit like full Photoshop, too! Something that Adobe just can’t seem to accomplish with their splitting up of different Adobe Photoshop workflows into 4-5 different iOS apps. ArtStudio’s UI, features and functionalities are very Photoshop-like. More so than in Procreate OR the iOS version of Pixelmator, which on the Mac side of things is a lot better version of the Photoshop UI. For some reason, the developers for Pixelmator on iOS made the UI very “un-Photoshop” like and is one of the main reasons I tend not to use Pixelmator for iOS too much because the UI on iOS and on the Mac are completely different and, somewhat oppose each other. Procreate and ArtStudio Pro just look and feel more Photoshop/Corel Painter-like, IMSO Other apps I love to work in are AutoDesk Sketchbook ( iOS and Mac versions ) and Tayasui Sketches and Concepts ideation, sketching/drawing/painting app. These are my 4-5 “go to” concept, sketching/drawing/painting apps on iOS. Also, these apps support my preference for the Adonit Pixel Bluetooth stylus that I have been using with my 1st gen iPad Pro for over two years, now.

Perhaps an update on this comparison, as Procreate can do most - if not all - the missing features you mentioned.

Hey, I got a question. Can you see the brush cursor on Artstudio pro and Procreate? Cause I got an iPad and I got affinity photo for it, and annoyingly I can't see the brush cursor size on the iPad. After I saw you review, I bought Art studio pro and I love it, I was having a bad time finding a proper app wich fix with my workflow because I'm so habituated to photoshop that I never felt confortable with the brushes in Procreate, also I hate how procreate just deletes everything that is out of boundarys of the canvas, In art studio everything is there just like photoshop (I called with that name my brushes). but also I agreed with you about the lazo tool, works better in procreate mostly because you can use the free lazo and the polygonal at same time. I wish both programns implement custom shape galleries in the future. btw how functional are the keyboard shortcuts in art studio? I just been working only with the tablet mode, and I do not want to invest in one Bluetooth keyboard without knowing if is a good experience.

WOW, never knew about Artstudio Pro, it's got exactly what most of us probably would want procreate to have. And it's actually not too bad in price either. Impressive. And agree completely in what they are lacking, custom keybindings would be a godsend, also if we could get that bluetooth matepad Clipstudio made for their program, in Japan and Asia, if we could get that thing here in the west, the ipad pro would be a fully fledged speed powerhouse. Or perhaps a Razer Orbweaver/ Logitech G13 gamepad being bluetooth compatible with ipad pro. would be nice, very nice.
