I notice that the van has a St Andrew's Cross inside a Circle which would imply in real life that the wagon is condemned for scrapping.

Don't forget the doppler effect. Will sound weird if the noise is eminating from a location which is no where near the item being highlighted. The sound needs to be where the item is... i.e. church.

Hi Sam, the "Chuffing" on the "Electric train stopping" is the Westinghouse Air Pump for the brakes etc. I know this because I used to travel on the "Mersey Rail" trains a lot in m younger years and you would hear the pumps go on and off during your journey. They would even operate periodically whilst stopped for some time at a terminus, to keep the air pressure up. I would go for the "Bluetooth" speaker idea. Larger speakers give better quality sound. You only have to listen to the internal speaker of a tablet then listen to it through an extension speaker or headphones to hear the difference. Regards, Alan :)

The additional pickups are supposed to be so you can hardwire the van into a specific spot on the layout and hook up a permanent power connection. The idea is that with that "condemned" logo sprayed on the side, you can leave it in a station siding as an old derelict.

Comparing it to a video game is a fairly loaded comparison. Compare it to something like a dinner or something which only gives you, what half hour of time to eat, and you will find the wagon doesn't look so bad.

Happy Sunday Sam!! 😉 Say Mate, if you're looking for a proper Sound Card for real Wagon Sounds... See if you can get Soundtraxx Products over there. They make a Chip (Decoder) called "SoundCar". You simply fit it to any piece of Rolling Stock with Metal Wheels. The Sound Card includes Clackety Clack, Brake Squeal (programmable to apply only on deceleration in the final 3 speed steps before stop - BETTER than the Loco Chip!!). Also Flat Spotted Wheel banging, Brake apparatus hissing and squeaking, and assorted Box Panel banging. All of which is programmable through CVs! It has its own address. It's a quality product, with good volume and sound quality. THAT bit of kit you've got there, I'd say more for the beginner to intermediate DCC user, who think that the effect is pretty cool. Priced right, it would be at home on several Layouts. Love the CRASH sound!! 😜 The Bluetooth Speaker sounded considerably more full. Cheers 🍻🍻 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

There's a manufacturer here in the US called "Broadway Limited Imports" that does something very similar to your idea with the Bluetooth speaker. It is quite a lot more expensive, but it connects to the sound system in their locomotives and it adds a lot more bass to the sound as well as being capable of playing the preloaded ambient sounds.

The Vent Van 1 also had a lot of wheel resistance to the extent it could not be run effectively. The Vent Van 1 had some workshop sounds so mine sits alongside the loco shed though it isn't used that often because when running the sound fitted diesels they drown it out. 35 quid for me is third way too another sound decoder so I won't be bothering with this one. You missed a category of user. I want eventually to get into scratch building etc but I’m still working on the fiddle yard etc. I’m taking cheap quick solutions as interim measures. E.g. Metcalfe platform which has now been replaced with totally customised from balsa, plasticard and 302 individual edging bricks. Sitting in the siding as condemned, this gives some added background sound until I can afford the time to do better. I found your Bluetooth information very helpful. Thanks.

As a serious modeler, I completely agree with what you say about the sound effects. I was able to add a 4" speaker with an Arduino and MP3 player module to add ambient noise to my layout, as well as having it automatically play effects for loading and unloading. All of this was done for much less than 25 pounds, and it sounds a lot better. Most of my sound effects did come from free sound effect websites.

I think its a great idea! Yes that looks like a condemned wagon so dumped in a siding would work. Ditch those horrendous couplings and it would look great as stationary piece. Modification wise you could take the chip out and wire it into a station or other place with a better speaker I'm sure taking a feed from the track should not be a hard. Options are endless! How about a grounded wagon on a farm?

I have a Gaugemaster GM781 Scenic sound module - Steam-era station. I run it off the station and street light power supply, although I think it is intended more for DCC. It is a little cheaper than the Hornby wagon, and doesn't take up track space. From your video I get the feeling that it might be a little better sound quality than the wagon, but not as good as your Bluetooth speaker. On the other hand, I don't have to worry about finding sound effects and working out how to download them, how to put them on an MP3 player, and then how to control the MP3 player.

One thing I see a lot of budget minded modellers doing to get sound for their layouts is getting tiny rechargable Bluetooth speakers and putting them in wagons, then piping in the sounds from a smartphone or a computer. I think the concept is good in that you have the van on a siding so you can play the sounds to create atmosphere however the sound quality lets it down .Hornby should have created a guards van with interior lights and lamps ,guards whistle.clickety clack;these are just a few ideas which would add atmosphere to the train in motion.I would not buy the sound van asI cannot see a use for it.The X on the van means its been condemmed and will be scrapped or sold off and end up in a farmers field as a shed in the sixties and seventies and later as they could be bought for a few pounds .I enjoyed the video Sam.

In theory you could put a dcc/tts sound chip in anything. Stick one in a building by the side of the track if you like. So long as it's electrically connected to the controller, it'll work. The chip doesn't know where you've put it. I quite like the idea of putting one inside an engine shed.

If you had a really nice layout with a stockyard setting and were looking for the last little detail to take it over the top throwing that in with other wagons and having either the cattle or sheep sound operate in that one area would be great. Otherwise it seems like a very odd product.

@@SamsTrains Hi Sam. The components are basically what is inside a Bluetooth speaker. So there's a Bluetooth receiver, which has a power input - just two AAA batteries (or about 3V+), this then leads to an amplifier unit. The amplifier unit then has an output for Left & Right speakers, - yes, you CAN have two separate speakers playing different levels. The two units take up just the space of about 3x3x3cm - very compact, and plenty of space left in the engine tender (or whatever you're using) for two high quality speakers. GWR

13:32 It sounds like an Ice Cream truck! 🤣 Perhaps inside the vent van is a couple of coolers with some Nestles drumstick ice cream inside them. We might also have some ice cream sandwiches and popsicles too. Looks like the 9F is doing its job by carrying 1 vent van full of coolers with ice cream and popsicles inside them. #WeAllScreamForIceCream 🍦🍨

I remember back in the 70s seeing lots of rolling stock with the crudely painted cross and circle with the word "COND" splashed above. You knew next stop was the breakers! Talking of which, the hornby van idea reminds me of the old "scalextric sound" of yore. Quite naff...a bit like all those singing billy bass novelty items. LOL. BTW where did you get your sound samples from? That seems a way more intelligent option.

It would probably be pretty straightforward to add some pick-ups and a TTS sound chip to, say, an old brake van, which you could then use with any locomotive you like. That's got to be cheaper than adding TTS sound to multiple existing locomotives. I'm giving serious consideration to fitting a TTS sound chip inside an engine shed building.

I personally like the concept of the Hornby TTS wagon and would rather that then. A sound system stuck inside a building one part of a layout. As being able to move the wagon around them to different locations to add to bring more life out of the layout. I am pretty I not the only one that likes to have wagons sat in sidlings to make it make the layout feel unless empty and when buying TTS. I don't expect the speakers to top of the range of quality of speakers and apart from changing speakers. Most modelers don't do much customizing to their sound locomotives.
