Hello Jay Jay, I believe that, despite everything, the balance of this year's performance is positive. We can't question Nature, it is what it is!... Considering all the roses I saw, it is extremely difficult for me to single out one, as I think they are all absolutely fabulous, but in a certain way my eyes remain stuck on Wedding Piano. Happy days!

Hi there. I agree with you. I’ve seen many times this year just when you think it’s a washout year the roses turn on the charm as if they have been waiting. But sadly along comes the rain again to wash everything away. That said I think the roses are growing strong for it, that’s my hope anyway. You see, your eye is being drawn to wedding piano, that says to me perhaps one of your favourites? And again I agree those you can’t separate. ;)

An excellent end of season review, Jay Jay, and a good demonstration of how gardening can keep you fit! I was lucky enough to have bought some Sweet Honeys and a Julia Child last autumn and am so glad I did. Their foliage is still shiny-healthy and abundant with lots of buds even now when many other roses are in obvious end-of-season diseased decline in this latest spell of rain and wind with their final flush being a busted flush! The only "problem" I have is that I will need to move the Honeys apart, not having anticipated their eventual height. I am not sure how easy it is to export live plants to the US, knowing how strict they can be at airports about any food you are taking in. You wouldn't want your rose to be incinerated! On discontinued roses: some rose nurseries in the UK do sell some discontinued David Austin roses, so there is always hope if you desperately want a rose. I suppose DA may stop selling a rose but then permit another grower to sell it under licence, or growers can propagate and sell the rose anyway after the 20 or 25 year licence protection period. Anyway, I am sure that you will be producing a few more videos for us over the next few months. The season ain't over till the fat man comes down the chimney!
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Жыл бұрын
Hi nik and thanks. Regarding the export it is something I did consider but perhaps made more of an assumption bare root wouldn’t be so much of an issue but I’ll look into that. The busted flush you mention I had exactly the same!!! I was waiting for what I could see was gonna be a nice turn out only for the roses to get wiped out in those storms last week. It seems to have been the story of this year. I jokingly said to gav a while ago, Gabriel oak is like a Chinese proverb this year. When bud of Gabriel oak start to open… rain come down. Regarding the brother Cadfael being reintroduced I’m led to believe that it’s da themselves in America have reconsidered there decision to retire and will be reintroducing it. I could be wrong but that’s what I’m led to believe. Anyway best of luck with moving your sweet honeys. Sadly mine will need moving also for the same reason. :( hope your wel

A great choice. Summer romance is one of my favourite roses. From that top 5 only summer romance and Ab Fab do I consider amongst my faves. I am considering doing a rose review of Summer romance next year, but a spoiler alert for you. gorgeous sturdy flowers that hold colour in heat. Lovely fragrant rose. Usually very healthy. Strong grower. Mines repeated well this year. Generous flowers. This year in this weather I’m seeing an easy week from the flowers. Do well in rain. I had one potted that I kept in shade until 3pm until sunset. It didn’t do well at all. I moved it into full sun I think early/mid august and it responded within 2 weeks with a great flush so I suspect it likes the sun. But those lovely flowers and in a colour that lasts, with its fragrance it’s winner winner chicken dinner. Best of luck

Hi Isabel. Great roses you have right there. I don’t know where in the world you are but my pot roses I do nothing with them for winter. I just make sure they are lifted an inch or so off the ground to avoid ground frost. You can get a coconut wrap/matting that you could layer around the base of the rose and add an extra inch or so of decent mulch to protect the bud Union if your worried about the sun zero temps going too low.

1:44 Yes, blackspot here in Ohio also on roses prone to it. They have now shed their summer leaves and now their autumn leaves are perfect. 5:53 My best rose is The Poet's Wife, all roses fade under strong summer sun, but especially the yellow ones, for that reason I planted her under a huge shade tree, 30 or so feet away from the tree trunk, She just keeps on blooming, and blooming andbl..... and the scent is intoxicating mix of predominantly grapefruit, underlaid with old rose scent. I just can not get enough of inhaling her perfume. 17:47 Your Bliss Parfuma has a wonderfull "dayglo" radiant sort of apricot/pink. Very desireable. My roses are 30% old, vintage roses from hundreds of years ago, 65% David Austin roses and 5% Kordes roses. I love them all, but my Old Pink Common Moss rose is soul meltingly beautiful. Her gummy mossy fresh ground allspice scented growth on unpoened blooms, then her intense old rose scent underlaid with camphor. Everyone MUST have an Old Common Pink Moss Rose, It is once and done, but such a nostalgic, vintage Redoute look.

Hi Ralph, Interesting what you say about poets wife. I know on its day it can be a delight but this year has been pretty weak for me. I have given it a great sunny position also which may be a mistake I need to rectify. I know several roses that would want her spot. In fact your words have encouraged me to make a decision she’s getting moved. It’s said she can take part sun so moving she will get. I too have some roses that look perfect health wise now but only because they have already shed diseased leaves. Very few of my roses escaped disease this year so far for a number of factors I guess. Some of which I have to accept responsibility for. Not cleaning my secateurs is one! Ever! The only time mine get cleaned is when I sharpen them which is often. But nowhere near as often as cleaning them as I should. Thanks Ralph.

Was so excited to see your video!!! Hooray for the all the roses that managed to survive & thrive in this most hideous year for you. I cannot find that Sweet Honey is available anywhere here in the U.S.. G.B. & Australia only. I am fairly sure that American customs would confiscate her if you tried shipping her here, but you can check that out. Isn't it annoying when a company won't get back to you? Let Kordes know that you are a PROMINENT rose influencer with a following of over 2K & however many views overall. Congratulations to Amadeus---while I'm not a fan of red or orange roses, No question he has been a survivor in this most difficult year! And as for Cadfael---he has already sold out again at David Austin-U.S. I may have helped that along by purchasing 3 the first day...anyway, their website says there will be more available. I thank you much for championing him. We have started our rainy season here in the Pacific Northwest so only a few blooms will be forthcoming due to short days & cloudy skies. I put umbrellas over the Angels (Earth & Lichfield) and also over Summer Romance who is wildly budded up. I took Violet's Pride in under the clear plastic overhang b/c she has over 30 buds on her , from almost-over to babies, second flush & I've only had her since June 14, wish I could get one to you, I'll see what's involved. Eager to see how you put your roses to bed for the winter.

Hi vintage, Yes i did consider the plant passport but is something I didn’t look into as yet. It may not be possible but I know companies can ship worldwide how they go about it I don’t know. A real shame because I’m confident sweet honey will do ever so well stateside. The only issue with mine would be the rootstock is suitable for the U.K. climate. But the idea of a big youtuber stateside trying it out for everyone to see is something appealing for me. Funny you should say red and orange. I’m not a fan of either, either. But seeing that vibrant red from 200 meters away when I’m driving home climbing up the front of my house it does look nice. But the whole idea is to have the other climbing white rose the other side overlapping in the middle. So it would be the red and the white together which looks much better. That’s the idea anyway. Well I hope your rainy season isn’t to damaging and hope you have a nice week. Thank you ;)

Hi Jay Jay. I just found this video, probably because I needed to see some flowers, well I certainly was not disappointed, your roses are stunning and I'm soooo happy that you're sticking to your guns and not giving chemical fertiliser. I agree with you about the weather, but if we thought that summer was a wash out, then how can I dedcribe autumn....my soil is now totally saturated, and I'm expecting 2 bare root roses any day😢. Gertrude Jekyll and pilgrim. Any advice would be gratefully received 😊 I imagine that planting them in a swamp is not an option? Finally, why would you send away a rose that is so stunning and is doing so well for you ? Many thanks for this video, I've got soggy dahlia tubers all over my dining room table....the shed they were in could no longer resist the unrelenting wind and rain, so it was a breath of fresh air to see those amazing blooms.🙋‍♀️

My sweet honey is as healthy and vigorous as yours. She is just too large for my small garden:(. And Id say the huge con is a long gap between two flashes, but it's a zero maintenance rose, as good as it gets. My Julia child was also doing well this year and almost a non -stop bloomer... My Boscobel.was the most prolific flowerer this year, but it doesn't like the rain so it didn't last...
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Жыл бұрын
Hi vorong. Yes there is a gap between the flushes that being the reason she didn’t get top spot. But still 10 weeks in flower easily I’d suggest. A more prolific flowerer let’s say lady of shallot with 3 flushes this year so far, she hasn’t seen 10 weeks in flower. Interesting what you say about boscobel. Last year for me she was prolific at flowering. This year not so. I think a reduced number of actual flushes on many of my roses compared to this time last year and boscobel is one of them. And then when they do flower along comes the rain and destroys them quick time.

Hi Stu, Sweet honey that you see in the back garden was purchased in a larger pot 15 litres I think. And perhaps double the size of your average container rose (all be it farmed at the same time.) it has now grown to 7ft tall in just two summers. I’m gonna say 4ft wide to be safe. My one in the front garden you may have seen was purchased midway through last summer as a normal potted rose and has grown to over 5ft easily and I pruned it hard, twice!. This rose will need space I think. I know the advertisements are wrong (in my garden anyway.) both of mine will probably now end up getting dug up because of this and moved. A bombproof rose Stu. A little robotic in its predictability/nature which could be a good thing for many. Very very thorny. But a very safe bet I think in terms of performance. Just a bit of a gap between flushes, but this will throw the odd flowers until December January I’m sure. Best of luck.

@@Jay_Jay Still no answer but I think it has something to do with Winter Hardiness also, looking at their USA Webpage from Star Roses they only sell them if they are ready for Zone 5 to 9, that’s pretty cold, here in West Germany is Zone 7, Alps are 6 so….🤗

Hi there. Penelope lively I’m sure will be available for you later this year bare root or next year. I think DA do this thing they release here in the U.K. first before going global. But it will come to you I’m sure and it’s a rose I do rate highly.

Sorry Jay Jay, I want to reach through the screen and pluck the black spot leaves off and feed your roses.

I hear you. I’m sure yours and many others are immaculately kept. Mine, they will get better care next year. My only hope is the roots this year have wandered far and wide looking for nutrients. So next year they can have a feast. The blackspot this year I gave up on. Next year cannot be as bad :)

I couldn’t find Amadeus in any nursery. Where can we find it?

What a shame that Sweet Honey is not sold in the US. Same about Astronomia (Meiguimov) - beautiful rose available in Europe but not in the US. Very strange.

Yes very frustrating. Here in the U.K. we also have roses that seem difficult to acquire that are easily available elsewhere.

How long do the flowers last on the shrub for Penelope Lively? I’ve heard a lot of new Austins (like Nye Bevan) flower spectacularly but the blooms only last a day, if that, so I’m hoping PL is better for the life of the blooms. (I don’t think anyone wants to have to be out deadheading every single day of the week.)

Hi Joe, yes many Austin’s last only 2-3 days I find. Especially this year. Penelope is much better I’d suggest an easy 4 days. Maybe 6-7 days at a push which for an Austin is very good in my humble.

@@Jay_Jay Excellent news! Thanks for that. If it’s introduced here in the US next year maybe I’ll try to nab one for a planter.

Excuse me, you showed one without flowers called "Summer romance" and after that a beautiful pink one without the name. Is the same rose? It would be nice if the name appeared.

My bad. Perhaps I made an assumption that everyone would understand plain English. I did explain it as best I could but yes all summer romance taken at different times one summer romance in the front garden and one in the back garden. Thanks

I’d like to have a cutting of Little Honey. I’m in zone 7a. Georgia in USA.

Hi Victoria. I’d love to see this grown in the states I think it would do well. Not sure a cutting would make it across the pond and as is being pointed out the issues with customs could be a problem.

Yes none of the roses in the ground have been fed. Only a thick layer of plant based mulch went down in April. I’ve said before many times it was an experiment this year because I’ve seen so many times roses thriving and flourishing in other gardens without feed. My only hope is the roots have grown strong this year looking for nutrients. Next year they will get fed :) but like I said in the video lack of food and lack of sunshine has led to a not so bumper crop this year.
