Moo and Schreiner are always very balanced and fair in their considerations. I also like Garland for 1 Corinthians.

Your videos are just incredible. I am struggling financially, trying to balance work and family, but also prioritizing spending time in the word. I want to get the most understanding I can with the little time I have to dedicate and little money I can spare. God-willing, I’ll be able to teach much to my children. I started building my biblical study library a few years ago when I was convicted of my sins and began to seek God by His Grace, somewhat blind to reviews pertaining to many purchases, as well as the dispositions of thought concerning the authors’ content. I am thankful for what I have, but I do want to expand my library. Long story made short, I SO MUCH appreciate what you do, so thank you so much, brother! You’re very fair in your presentations and exceptionally informative. I appreciate your content!

There is a 2nd edition of Moo's PNTC on Colossians and Philemon coming out..

Amazing video as always, and the most important thing is that you present the author’s view on the hard passages of the book, which makes your channel the best in the field.

Carson on second Corinthians; The best two commentaries on the Greek text of this epistle are those of Margaret E. Thrall (2 vols.; ICC, 1994-2000) and Murray J. Harris (NIGTC, 2005)

Thrall is excellent

For Romans… I agree with the NICNT at #1, Moo has a way of summarizing passages into tables and turns of phrase that I find helpful and enjoyable to read. For me another of Longenecker’s contributions (but to the NIGTC for Romans) is my #2… he has a lot of great quotes from throughout church history from various saints/pastors/theologians… so it’s like I get to have a little conversation with them too (while maintaining a closer proximity with the Greek). In terms of ‘lower shelf cookies’ for Romans 🤣… I like Stott in the BST or FF Bruce in the TNTC… both have helpful application and they will often simplify something that I’ve made too complex… speaking of making the complex easy to understand… that’s how I would describe your reviews. Keep up the great work sir!

Great comments. Yes, Stott is likely my personal favorite on Romans. i like what you said about Moo. I remember trying to understand the New Perspective, and then I read Moo's discussion of it, and if I remember correctly he has a table talking about backgrounding and foregrounding that was extremely helpful to me. It was an ah-ha moment.

For an interesting overview of Paul within the historical context of Second Temple Judaism and earliest Christianity, N.T. Wright's "Paul, a Biography" is a place to start, followed by his "Justification" and "The Resurrection of the Son of God".

Hoehners Ephesians is an outstanding work, I could not find any other of the sixteen commentaries from the main authors and sets to compare.

The shorter commentary by Thiselton is excellent. It's my #1 recommendation for 1Corinthians: Anthony C. Thiselton, First Corinthians: A Shorter Exegetical and Pastoral Commentary. Also, for those interested in a more accessible version of Hoehner's Ephesians commentary I'd suggest Cornerstone Biblical Commentary, Vol 16. I find CBC to be a bit hit or miss for my taste, but this volume, particularly Hoehner's treatment of Ephesians, is definitely a hit.

When I studied through Galatians, I really loved Moo in Baker and Shreiener in Zondervan Exegetical. I didn’t use the Word volume, so I can’t compare, but these two from Moo and Schreiener are some of my favorites of any commentaries that I’ve used for studying a book of the Bible.
@BestBibleCommentaries2 ай бұрын
Thank you. Great recommendations. Those are great commentaries. Have you explored Keener's stand-alone?
@terryb74752 ай бұрын
@@BestBibleCommentaries I did not use Keener, but I see from your site that it is highly regarded. There comes a point where I need to move on from a book and stop buying more commentaries 😊. I’m just starting Leviticus. Will be using Bible Expositor’s (because I already had it), NAC and ZEC. I’ve always found Leviticus to be a bit intimidating, so this my first time to tackle it in detail.
@BestBibleCommentaries2 ай бұрын
Understood! Those Leviticus commentaries are excellent. If you haven't bought them yet, and are using them for ministry purposes, the Leviticus volumes in the Story of God series and the Preaching the Word series may be helpful to you.
@terryb74752 ай бұрын
@@BestBibleCommentaries Thanks, Daniel. The NAC is relatively small, so I think I can add another. It’s a bit of a quandary, though. I really liked Dr Matthews on Genesis in NAC but the Story of God Leviticus volume is on sale for $16 😊. Should probably vote with my wallet. Thanks again for all your hard work.

I like your video and your channel. How do you consider the New Perspective when you rank? Just wondering.
@BestBibleCommentaries2 ай бұрын
Hi, these aren't necessarily my personal rankings, but what I believe have the best academic reviews. For example, Moo's Romans is the best reviewed but my personal favorite is probably John Stott. I personally have NPP commentaries and others that argue against it. Excellent commentators view the issue differently. I am still in the old perspective camp.

I have both of the Ephesian commentaries mentioned (O'Brien and Hoehner). While the O'Brien is great (personally, I don't care about the controversy, take that up with Matt, Luke, and Jude), the Hoehner is much more comprehensive and coherent.

My friend does work with Bill Mounce and asked him for me if his pastorals commentary was going to get an update. Dr. Mounce really wants to but the publisher isn't expressing any interest.
@BestBibleCommentaries2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I know that the Pastorals aren't a big money maker for publishers, unlike the Gospels, Acts, Romans, Revelation, Genesis, and maybe a few others. Anyway, sometimes the money makers get more attention. My other thought is the WBC has been passed around to more publishers than most series. I'm sure Mounce didn't even write it for Zondervan, maybe Thomas Nelson? Mounce is at the top of my list of people I would like to see another commentary from -- his Pastorals is truly that good.

Mounce seems like a solid guy too. His main project is that online "seminary" Biblical Training and it's been a real blessing to me personally.

Are they all "Calvinist"? if so, you need to separate them by identifying them as "reformed" There is a difference in "just as the Greek reads" and reformed theology you know. reformed theology is a "commentary" within itself but it's OK if we call it "Opinions or false doctrine" for those of us that actually study the original texts!
