Rare to see such a savage duel on screen but very well done. Plate metal actually completely stopping a sword, no chivalric code saying not to use underhanded tactics, half-swording can't remember ever seeing that shown on screen before.
@fredfry51009 ай бұрын
I actually have seen half swording on screen, though it is both new and rare. The first time was a sparing scene in Season of the Witch (movie). A squire wants to accompany our heroes and has to prove himself. A more notable occurrence is in recent movie called The King. It's about Henry the 5th.

Is impressive how advanced was plate armor, modern tests show it not only gives great protection, it barely impairs movement as long as you are strong enough to wear it, those medieval artisans knew their craft.
@sthomas25929 ай бұрын
Did they start wearing scaled down versions when very young? Seems like growing up wearing it would be a good strategy.
@cesaravegah37879 ай бұрын
@@sthomas2592 Not sure, nobles trained from infancy hunting and riding, both very physical demanding activities, also having acces to good food gave the chance to grow strong, probably stronger than the average kid nowdays, how they trained to use ihevy armor which, by the way, was extremly expensive, is a very interesting question.
@sanakassara9 ай бұрын
It was durable and flexible, that was the whole point - to shield the user. That armor however was hollywood armor. Many of the fastenings for example on the movie armor did not exist and the armor pieces wouldn't have held together so well as they did in the scene. The armor also got dented, the blows had effects on the body even when the blades didn't. They also seemed to be very lightly padded, which would have been an issue.
@cesaravegah37879 ай бұрын
@@sanakassara This is why I wrote about modern tests, whatever they used for a movie is not real deal, starting with the helmets which conveniently allow us to see the actor faces, nothing that you would want to use on a fight for your life.

Not the typical Hollywood medieval combat. It was no holds barred, root hog or die.

I think the fight was historically accurate except for the half open helms. I know Scott probably did this so we can see the actors faces but he should've just had the fight wo us needing to see facial expressions. Otherwise i thought it well done
@imlivingunderyourbed78459 ай бұрын
A good example they could've done is Hector vs Achilles duel from Troy. Neither of them may be wearing helmets in order to show their face too, but their emotions are shown more through their body language. Hector's attacks progressively became more and more aggressive and desperate while Achilles, despite recently losing Patroclus, remained calm and collected.
@I_Willenbrock_I9 ай бұрын
No it wasn't accurate in its execution. It was accurate in its brutality and the sheer will to use everything in your repertoire to survive but it was not historically accurate regarding the actual fight. Bashing your fists against a breast plate? Even with gauntlets, you would break your hand before the opponent feels something and that's just the tip. However, I'm thankful they didn't slice through armor like it wasn't there.
@jacqirius9 ай бұрын
Yeah if both of them never held any sort of weapon in their hand and had no experience or training in fighting then that fight would be historically accurate but as they are depicted as literal knights this is just another very retarded and unreasonable depiction as any other out there

I like this duel all in all. I hate the helmets though. Also that sword breaking during the fight seems incredibly unlikely. At this point in history they were quite good at making high quality weapons. Especially for a couple of knights as wealthy as these two. I can forgive that for dramatic purposes. Dope fight all in all though.

The delivering of immobility upon a heavily armored opponent under these circumstances would be the key objective. Feet, ankles, knees, hips. You see their armor becomes an additional hinderance at that point. Can't move = can't fight. Normally, though frowned upon, the crippling of the horse alone usually succeeds in this. There's nothing quite like 2,000 lbs of horse travelling 40 mph landing on top of its rider to put a crimp in a persons day. If their luck is GOOD, they'll only get a broken leg. If their luck is bad the horse lands directly on them squishing them like a can of tuna. I think the Huns and the Tribal Americans had it right when they utilized the equestrian speed advantage in hit and run offensive projectile activity. Get in. Get out. Don't hang around to have your mount used against you in close quarters.
@quakethedoombringer10 ай бұрын
I think you grossly underestimate how agile a knight is even when wearing full gear like this, especially high on adrenaline. Good luck aiming for his weak points (armpits, inner thighs, neck, etc.) while he is also busy smashing your skull in, especially if you don't have smashing weapon like a mace. I can understand horse armor though, hence why during the renaissance knights rarely give horses balding

What you're saying makes no sense, any wound is a hinderance no matter if you're armored or not, that's why you don't target just "Feet, ankles, knees, hips." you target any gap you can or bash your way with a warhammer/mace etc. Also, no cavalry would "hang around", if you're on top of a horse your only advantage is speed and mobility, you lose that and it's over.

When the rondel went down Jacques Le Grie's throat, I rejoiced (the first time I saw the movie). Yes, Carrouge is dumb, uneducated, unsophisticated... next to him, his wife doesn't get what her intellectual level and spiritual needs would warrant. But, after all, the truth has prevailed. Of course, we can only guess how much she wanted intimacy with Le Gry, but Le Gry is wrong - you shouldn't go to bed with married ladies (and a friend's wife).

I hate it when hollywood movies make fights scenes like this and their helmets fly off in 5 seconds. Yeah I get it that they paid these actors for their faces and it should be seen but it's rediculous. Their armor cost as much as a castle and are tailored to them. It wouldn't just fly off. In fact the real Jean de Carrouges once on the ground with Le Gris used the hilt of his dagger to smash the hinges of Le Gris' face plate tearing it off. From their he drove his dagger into Le Gris neck after failing to get a confession out of him.
