Stylish, powerful, and completely redesigned from the original 1998 TT, we are going to explore the second-generation Mark 2 Audi TT with an owner who’s lucky enough to own both cars and share his ownership experience.
A question that often pops up is, how reliable is the Audi TT Mk2 and is it expensive to maintain? The short answer is, the Mk2 TT is very reliable and there is a lot of aftermarket support with inexpensive parts you can upgrade or replace.
Like any used sports car, the cost of ownership largely depends on how well the car has been cared for by the previous owner. Buying a TT Mk2 in poor condition can lead to significant expenses, but if you find one that's been properly maintained, the cost shouldn't be much different from other cars in its class.
A good way to look at buying the Audi TT Mk2 is to remember that the condition of the car trumps low mileage.
Does the Audi TT mk2 (2006-2014) have the potential to be a future classic?
Rewind the clock and look at the development history of the Audi TT, you see, while the first-generation TT was a massive hit with buyers and the design was a big disruption in the automotive industry, Audi had the challenge of surpassing that with the next TT model.
The first glimpse of the second-generation TT came at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2005, in the form of the Audi Shooting Brake concept. While it looked radically different from the final Mk2 model, the Shooting Brake featured many of the same technologies that would eventually appear in the new car when it came to market.
Following the reveal of the Shooting Brake, Audi officially introduced the proper Mk2 TT on April 6, 2006. Engineers at the German car manufacturer based the new TT on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform and gave it an internal designation of Type 8J.
The Mk2 TT wasn't just about looks, they aimed to address handling and driving dynamics for a faster car. Audi increased its overall size, making it approximately (5 inches) longer and (3 inches) wider. The 2+2 coupé remained the standard configuration, but a two-seater roadster was also available for those who craved the open air cockpit.
Like all vehicles built on the PQ35 platform, the second-generation TT received multi-link fully independent rear suspension, complementing the independent suspension at the front. Audi even offered an optional extra, Audi Magnetic Ride, which automatically adjusted the suspension damping properties depending on road conditions and driving style.
And here's a neat feature. The Mk2 TT boasted a revised spoiler that automatically deployed at speeds greater than 125 km/h (78 mph) to enhance downforce, retracting at speeds under 80 km/h (50 mph) to maintain the clean aesthetics at the rear of the vehicle. PLUS for those who wanted manual control of the spoiler, Audi provided a button on the lower section of the center console.
Predicting future classics can be tricky, but we've seen the first-generation Audi TT gain recognition as a modern classic and the second-generation might follow suit. TO be on the safe side, consider buying one of the top-end RS models; the TT RS is the most likely to going to be the ultimate version of the TT Mk2 to own.
Should you buy a VR6 TT over TT RS?
The mark 2 TT was optioned in a few configurations, including the 2 wheel drive only, but If you can, I'd suggest going for a Quattro model. Even Audi’s Haldex Quattro option offers superior performance and handling, and they tend to hold their value better over time. Buying a VR6 engine Mk2 TT over the TT RS essentially comes down to price. If you can afford the TT RS do it, otherwise the manual transmission VR6 model is a great alternative for less money.
The 3.2-liter V6 is in my opinion the better choice over the 2L turbo. With 247 bhp on tap, it propels the TT Mk2 with instant throttle response. The V6 engine's sonorous exhaust note adds to the thrill, and it's a great choice for those who appreciate a sportier driving experience.
