I definitely use PF (and other channels) as a guide if I'm interested in something to purchase and tests have been conducted on it. Even then, sometimes its not necessarily about getting the best of the best of side item but how you invest your money for said item. There has been times I've bought last place items due to the one time factor of use. Other times, it has been the overall winner cause I need the longevity of the item to last. So it doesn't matter if its the first or worst placed item. In the end, this man (and others) have put in the time and effort for us to use their tests as guidance, and that is something I am grateful for. Thanks PF for all that you do. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Same with Mesquite tree thorns. That's possible - could also be that "ringing" the metal of the bit during the thousands of impacts allows the stresses in the bit to settle out. Like Shot-peening connecting rods for high horsepower applications. That would be a fun test - put a bit in a drill with a slip clutch, and let it rattle on a strength that's high enough to sink the screw/bolt into the wood, but not go crazy and cam out the bit...let various bits rattle/ring for different amount of times and see if you can see a noticeable difference in end strength.

I don't ever use the small bits because they either detach and stick to the screw head or they fall out when caring them or when in the tool bag or just in general you lose them. The 2 in bits always stay in the driver until you release them and change the bits. As an professional i would always recommend the 2 in torx bits in a impact driver. @@thfmadmax He has used nm and other SI units in other videos. I'm not quite sure why he chooses SI in some places but not others. For example usually he measures weight in grammes. As a European I'd far prefer he always used metric but I can understand how big his NA audience must be and that he himself has greater familiarity with imperial.

Really nice video! I love your comparisons and frequently use them when buying new stuff! You are doing a very important job for consumers like me. One improvement tip for maybe the next video: When using bits no one wears safety goggles! So maybe check the particles flying away from the breaking bits to determine the safest one. Just an idea, dont know if it would unnecessarily prolong a video. Anyways, keep it up.

You should do a test of the different types of screw heads to determine which one allows the most torque to be applied before camming out. Like #2 Philip's vs flathead vs T25 vs Robertson's [square]. Even throw in an apple triangle head for Schlitz and giggles.
@Kelvallontan3 жыл бұрын
Philips vs flathead is a no brainer, even if philips (and pozidriv that is only slightly better) is a bad type of screw head already, T20 or 25 vs robertson would be interesting, however, not that useful since you (by you, I mean the majority of the human beings) can't really access robertson easily anyways. Torx should beat the allen print that tends to round up when there's a lot of torque applied.

Were Philip’s designed to cam out, or is that an urban myth? Since discovering torx, I definitely prefer them.
@11bravoNRD3 жыл бұрын
@@MoneyManHolmes I dont think it was "designed" to cam out but it's just what happens. That's why the Robertson was created. To minimize the chance of caming out.

As a contractor who's installed tens of thousands of torx screws, I've always had better luck with the 1-piece, full-shank bits than the bit tips which require a holder. It seems like the bit holder introduces an extra place for wobble which increases failure of screws or bits. Regardless of bit type, torx is pretty much the most mechanically superior fastener head option. I've lost far more torx bits than I've worn out, and I certainly can't say that for phillips.

This is a great video idea. By what amount and in what ways do bit styles change things for screws? Every year we build (and later disssemble) a 16'x8' cabana with windows, solar panels etc. I am starting to hate robertson. Once you get paint in the screw heads and a bit of dirt, they are impossible to reuse!
@jameswieler32952 жыл бұрын
@@KF1 torx are my favorite, I know what you mean about Robertson. It's prevalent in Canada because it's a Canadian invention but Torx are superior (more contact surface area).

Is it also possible the full shank allowing for flex during impact extends the life of the bit/screw too? I have noticed Every box of torx i've used has a full shank bit included in the box, instead of a bit tip

I use screwdrivers and bits from PB-swisstools. I have used my most used torx bit for at least 3000 screws. Not bad for a 2 euro bit. I have no idea if this brand is available in the USA but there are no better screwdrivers, bits and hex keys than pb-swisstools in my opinion.

I love the video, have you ever considered trying to make a very large test testing the biggest and baddest of 1/2 drive impact wrenches? There are huge debates over the Milwuakee, Dewalt, Snap on (That one is very expensive so I won't expect you to buy it but it would make for a fantastic debate). Since they all output such high torque you would need really heavy testing equipment with nuts in the 30mm size torqued down to hell

As always, awesome video! I would mention that having the bit stick in the screw after driving doesn't seem like it would be a big deal most of the time as you'd likely be attaching a piece of lumber to larger structure which would retain it and make removing the impact driver easier.
