I *adore* the idea of doing improvement patches for lesser games to make them far more palatable. So much more useful than just adjusting already-awesome games. That Dennis the Menace patch is what we need MORE of!!! In love with this idea. Bring on the fixes for more of the licensed tripe!

"In my opinion it is easier to play patch ROMs on a PC emulator." Well, that's just a fact so well done having a realistic opinion, but used to be "easy" is not on the priority list. The Jurassic Park improvements sound GREAT because they seem they would be compatible with specialized hardware like handhelds, instead of getting told to not do what you WANT and play how you WANT to. The ASM file actually opens the computing up to the USER, like they should be depending on computers already, and you can do things like actually saving and renaming the specific random builds you now have access to. And you can limit yourself to not use Save States, or growing up into a permanent toddler who can't handle the lack of them.

Patches for great games are...great! Love 'em BUT that last entry is interesting to me because I think a lot of bad or middle-of-the-road games could be worth playing with balance tweaks and QoL improvements, and I love to see games get that second chance
@BrianVarvaro
@BrianVarvaro 2 жыл бұрын
I think like 95% of games on the NES have aged poorly to some degree. Even big games like Zelda or Mega Man have a lot of janky or obtuse that can make them hard to play today. Still, they have a good foundation, and with some re-balancing and quality of life improvements, they're a lot easier to deal with. Something like the original Ninja Turtles game would probably be better remembered if it were easier to play.
@AltimaNEO
@AltimaNEO 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrianVarvaro Yeah, a lot of the frustration I had with games as a kid was mostly due to controls being janky, or dumb repetitive things like having to enter a menu over and over for common things.
@chrismdb5686
@chrismdb5686 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrianVarvaro Very strong disagree here. I played thru the original Zelda as well as the first seven Mega Man titles this year and they're all still great games. Mind you I had never played any of them before and went in blind minus looking up boss weaknesses for the Mega Man titles (that level of trial and error is something I feel is unnecessary nowadays and more made for kids with unlimited time on their hands). It really comes down to what you're comfortable playing I guess. I don't have any problems with old games but most people who only like modern shooters or movie games could never get into older titles.

Even though I thought I knew most things about Zelda II, just found out yesterday that the only reason the game allowed respawns at the Great Palace is due to the fact that it is on Side A of the Disk on the original FDS release. Whereas everything else besides the title screen is on Side B, so requiring the player to flip the disk each time they got there after the Valley of Death would be even more tedious, so a reprieve was programmed in. And when porting to cart for America, there was no need to make a change that would make a hard game even harder… Someone claimed that the game was rereleased on cart in 92 in Japan as well, but can’t seem to find any info confirming that?

I’ve been waiting on a Star Fox patch ever since you first showed off that Gradius slowdown patch from your first improvement video! Game might actually be playable for me now lol. I didn’t get into SF until SF64, so going back to the SNES version has always been a nightmare for me. Now I might actually find some real enjoyment in revisiting it! Does the same patch exist for Star Fox 2? I assume it suffers from the exact same slowdown, and would be unplayable without a patch for me as well… 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’ve ALWAYS dreamt of being able to apply modern hardware into older games to eliminate their hardware limited issues! Things like sprites blinking in and out on games like TMNT on the NES or the slowdown from MMX1 or even when the music drops during battles in Secret of Mana! I have absolutely ZERO technical skill and can barely get emu’s running, otherwise I’d prob get into modifying those old games/hardware with my requested QoL patches 😅

Chrono Trigger forces you to use certain characters for their elements (or Ayla when you're in Dalton's jail and her fields let you fight without equipment). Lavos is a tedious equipment based boss (you just lose if you still use Marle's permanent haste instead of haste helms) where you need to one shot the left bit of the third form to stand a chance (Ayla and Frog's slurp kiss heals and removes status effects if they can act, and). Hack just seems to be a hard mode honestly. Also ff5 ancient cave charm is from having jobs be random, so even bad ones like berserker, mystic knight, or blue mage (without a beastmaster or prep) can be useful based on your equipment.

I'll be honest, I much rather see games like the last one shown getting patches than games that are already a ton of fun to play. That way, we just get more overall fun games on the SNES rather than give great games a red carpet treatment

Even with the sprite flicker (or overlapping or whatever the hell is happening), the 5 enemies on screen thing is impressive in Final Fight. Are you running it on OG hardware though? Cause I couldn't imagine it running that well since even with 3 on screen it tends to slow down, and occasionally flicker, especially in 2 player mode. Are you using an emulator? Or is there a chip upgrade thing like for Gradius going on? Curious to see what it would look like on OG hardware if you're indeed using an emulator.

It runs exactly the same on the OG SNES with no extra upgrade hardware. For some reason, Final Fight 2 has an excellent VRAM sprite engine, allowing for more characters on screen while using fewer hardware sprites than Final Fight 1 and 3 (yes, the sprite engine in FF3 is a downgrade of FF2... and it shows). The game still has some flickering, but there's nothing you can do about it as this is the limit of 34 sprite tiles per scanline that the hardware has. However you can disable the overlapping routine, just use this game genie that I made: 4864-3D0F

I’ll take flickering anytime to have 5 enemies!
